What are cat treats?

A delicacy from the master's table is not the best option for a pet. This is one of the main causes of obesity in cats. If you decide to treat your pet with a tasty treat, then it should be useful.

Cat treats are high in protein from:

  • natural meat;
  • fish;
  • offal;
  • bird.

In many of them, the meat content is 100%, some have cereals in their composition.

Treats for cats have a rich assortment:

  • Wet. These are all kinds of pates, aspic, pieces in sauce. They have an amazing scent that attracts the cat. They can be used as entertainment, to establish friendly relationships, consolation, if the cat is left alone for a long time.
  • Dry. These are pillows that can be crispy and have a tasty filling, straws made from real dried meat or fish, sausages, croutons and even cookies. Such treats are used to educate and train cats or as a reward.

    The treat can be useful, for example, it can help remove hair from the digestive tract.

  • Vegetable. They contain a large number of cereals. They are rich in fiber, which contributes to normal digestion in cats.

Are treats essential in a cat's diet?

The diet of cats from caring owners is quite diverse. But it often happens that capricious animals choose one type of food and eat it all their lives, without changing their habits. A diet consisting of natural food, that is, the one prepared by the owners, although rich in variety, is poor in vitamins and minerals. Such nutrition cannot provide the cat with the full range of nutrients.

Then goodies come to the rescue. Their main purpose is to diversify the pet's diet and provide it with everything necessary for harmonious development and a healthy life. Treats are optional in your cat's diet. Many pets do just fine without them all their lives. This product cannot replace feed, but it can be a useful supplement.

The main types of ready-made treats for cats

Ready-made treats for cats are divided into 4 types:

  • Neutral - These are for the usual treat or reward during training.
  • Vitamins - contain vitamins and various trace elements to enrich a cat's usual diet.
  • Nutritious - can replace a full meal. They contain 100% natural meat of various varieties.
  • Preventive - prescribed only by a veterinarian to solve health problems.

Can I use them without veterinarian advice?

Treating cats, as a rule, does not require specialist advice, except when it is necessary to prescribe preventive-type treats. All other goodies can be given at your discretion. You only need to monitor the amount of delicacies given out and treat without fanaticism. Otherwise, there is a risk that the pet will require "delicious" as the main diet.

When I lived in an apartment and I had a cat, I gave her treats every morning when I left for work, so that she would not get bored, being alone for the whole day. Sometimes it seemed to me that from the moment I open my eyes, the cat was already waiting with all her might for me to leave, and she would receive her “tasty”. At first I gave a few pieces of treats (at that time the choice was small, and I bought mostly pillows for cats), but then the kitty grew wiser and stopped eating her breakfast, knowing that there would be a lot of tasty things ahead. Then I harshly reduced the goodies to one pillow.

Selection criteria for a specific animal

When choosing a treat for your pet, you should pay attention to the category of the treat. Here is the same principle as when choosing a feed:

  • age;
  • physical data;
  • the state of the animal.

Presumably, crunchy snacks will not work for an elderly pet who has grinded teeth or even lost them. But a soft pate or lamb in sauce will be just right. The same goes for preventive treats. But here a doctor will come to the rescue, who will give specific instructions.

When choosing a treat, special attention should be paid to the composition of the product. The more meat it contains, the better the delicacy is and the more it will benefit the pet. Also, you should not abuse the products of those companies that specialize in the production of cheap animal feed. Treats may and will be budgetary, but they are unlikely to benefit the pet.

How to make your own cat treats

Despite the fact that there is a huge selection of delicacies in stores, many owners prefer to cook the delicacies on their own. It is cheaper, and the composition is known for sure:

  • The simplest thing is to cut any meat into very thin slices and bake in the oven. There is no need to salt. The output will be a wonderful meat straw. This is a dry type of treat that is easy to use. You can simply put it in a bag and take it with you, for example, to a cat beauty salon, to encourage and comfort your pet after the procedure.
  • The second recipe is a little more complicated. It is necessary to cook the meat broth. Cut the boiled meat into small pieces, add broth and bake in the oven. You can add carrots and rice flour for extra thickness. If you boil a steep enough beef or chicken broth, the natural gelatin will turn the dish into a jellied one. It can be decomposed in portions and even frozen.

Now I live in a private house, and I have four cats in my yard. To be honest, I don’t give them any treats. Sometimes they get some good quality dry food (I buy it in case I didn't have time to cook the food for the cats or forgot to defrost their meat). But once a day, my cats eat raw chicken necks. It seems to me that there is nothing tastier for them. Not once did any of the cats turn their nose away from this food. Seeing me with a plate on the doorstep, they immediately line up in rank (children go ahead, mother cat always eats last) and raise a joyful howl. But I agree that a pet sometimes needs treats to reward or cheer up.

How to properly give treats to your pet

As mentioned above, treats for cats are more entertainment than a full meal. They are very nutritious, and in large quantities they can harm a pet's figure. Their use should not exceed two times a day, and then in exceptional cases. Otherwise, there is a risk of starting to work only for the cat's interests.

Felinology experts agree that goodies are necessary and important, but they should bring joy and pleasure, and not become commonplace.

Reviews

Each owner can give his pet a little joy through a treat. Cats know how to be grateful. And if the animal is not a part of the interior, but a real member of the family, then its pleasures should be real.
