С0, С1, С2, С3: which category of eggs is better?
On cardboard packages and on the eggs themselves, you can find codes: C0, C1, C2, C3 … What do they mean and what information do they convey to the consumer? Let's get acquainted with the categories of chicken eggs.
We decipher the markings on the packaging of eggs
The first letter in the label indicates the shelf life of the egg. In supermarkets, you can stumble upon eggs marked with red or blue D - "diet". These products are the freshest. They must be sold and consumed within seven days after demolition. Diet eggs have a fixed yolk, and the height of the empty space under the shell is no more than 4 mm.
The marking can also be duplicated on the packaging.
After a week, dietary eggs are transferred to the category of canteens and are marked with a blue letter C. In these products, the yolk becomes mobile, and the height of the empty space increases to 7-9 mm. However, these eggs are still quite nutritious, although the content of nutrients is noticeably inferior to dietary ones. Food from the canteen category can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 90 days - at this time, no changes will occur to them.
The second part of the code is the category. It indicates the weight of the egg. For other characteristics, products of all categories are the same. They do not differ in taste, nutritional value, or whipping. It is generally believed that eggs of categories C0 or CB are the most useful, but in reality this is not so. They really have more nutrients, but the reason for this is not their increased concentration, but the large size and weight of the egg itself.
Table: egg weight by category
C3 | 35 to 44.9 g |
C2 | from 45 to 54.9 g |
C1 | from 55 to 64.9 g |
C0 | 65 to 74.9 g |
SV | more than 75 g |
Egg marking is based on simple principles that are easy to remember. Knowing how the categories differ, you can easily choose the eggs you like.
