From plane to car: where to sit to survive in case of danger
Transport is designed to save time, make our life easier and more comfortable, but sometimes helpers become enemies: planes fall, cars collide, trains go off the rails and people always suffer. But staying at home is not an option either. It is in our power to "spread the straws" and choose a relatively safe place in the cabin.
Airplane
It is generally accepted that the seats located at the rear of the aircraft are less dangerous than the business class and the first rows. Statistics based on research by the US National Transportation Safety Board. Scientists from all sides examined the worst plane crashes in the past 35 years: the places of the survivors, the causes of the accidents, the schemes of the aircraft. As a result, it turned out that about 70% of the lucky ones flew closer to the tail.
The second most secure sector was the seats above the wings: 60% of the surviving passengers bought tickets there.
At a high altitude, the nose of the aircraft is the first to "go to the bottom", therefore most often people sitting in the front part die.
Of course, the seats above the wings and in the tail cannot compete in terms of comfort with the first rows, but if safety is a priority, the "gallery" undoubtedly wins. Although business class is much more expensive than economy class. But this is a paradox only at first glance, because in principle they rarely survive in plane crashes.
A car
It is believed that during a frontal collision, any driver will instinctively maneuver in such a way as to protect themselves from impact, thereby protecting the passenger sitting in the back and redirecting the entire weight of the impact to the passenger next to him.
There is a certain logic to this. The back row leads in safety in the car, with a seat in the middle 16% preferable to the side seats. This conclusion was made by scientists from the American University of Buffalo.
Of course, it's always worth remembering about belts. According to the results of the study, about 47% of people injured in car accidents were not wearing their seatbelt, and 35% of them died. Once in the car, the first thing you need to do is buckle up, regardless of the space occupied.
Bus
The safe seats on the bus, as well as in the car, depend on the type of accident.
If a person rides in a seat without a back or is not fastened, he will continue to move and fly along the entire passenger compartment.
The driver will not dodge a collision, thereby protecting passengers sitting behind him if he falls asleep and crashes into a post or tree, for example. And in a situation of leaving on the lane of oncoming traffic, the blow will have just a row behind the driver. However, if the bus is hit by another vehicle in the back or side, then the first rows and aisle seats will be the most reliable.
We conclude that on bus travel it is better to stay in the center of the cabin.
Train
The train is ranked second in the ranking of the safest modes of transport. At the same time, accidents on railway tracks are not uncommon.
If we talk about seats, then buy a ticket in the compartment in the middle of the car. You should not choose the upper shelves and those traveling in the direction of travel, since you can fall from them with sudden braking.
In the reserved seat the same story, but try to lie with your feet in the direction of movement: when you hit, you will hit the wall with them, and not with your head.
Ship
The safest places on a passenger ship are the cabins located on the upper deck and, accordingly, the deck itself.
Due to the rapid collection of water, getting to the economy class seats will be problematic. And if there is a fire on the ship and general panic, it will be almost impossible to get out of there. It is enough to watch the movie "Titanic" to make sure that it is better to cut through the vastness of the ocean, being somewhere higher.
Trolleybus
For the trolleybus, all the same precautions apply as for the bus: choose seats away from windows, closer to the aisle and in the middle of the cabin.
If you have a choice whether to sit in the direction of movement or against it, then turn your back in the direction of movement - in a head-on collision, you will rest against the back of the seat, and not fly forward through the entire cabin.
