Types of towels and types of their soiling

It is best to use towels for the kitchen made of short-haired materials with good absorbency: cotton, linen or bamboo. Nowadays, fabric mixes are popular, for example, a blend of linen and cotton. These towels are very durable and hygroscopic, almost non-fading and resistant to washing.

In our kitchens, you can often see the following towels:

  • terry - soft, fluffy towels made of threads of different densities and colors;
  • waffle - made of linen and cotton by means of a special interweaving of threads, creating a pattern in the form of a waffle;
  • printed towels;
  • special kitchen paper towels.

The last option is disposable. Such a towel does not need to be washed, it is thrown into the trash bin after use. And we'll talk about the rest of the types.

Choose kitchen towels made from soft absorbent cloth

Terry towels are very soft, pleasant to the touch and wipe away water and dirt well. But on the other hand, it is this property that makes such towels not the best choice for working in the kitchen: microbes accumulate and reliably settle in terry cloth, and besides, it dries for a long time. Caring for such a towel will be tedious. Therefore, experts recommend cotton and linen, in particular, very comfortable waffle napkins.

Preventive measures

The kitchen is not a bedroom or living room; here spots await you at every turn. If you use this place for its intended purpose - cooking, eating, tidying up - then the question of washing towels will arise regularly. You will encounter stains from:

  • fat;
  • dirty water;
  • juices;
  • berries;
  • coffee and tea;
  • milk and dairy products;
  • blood after cutting meat or fish;
  • mold.

Add to this unpleasant odors, which also need to get rid of. Some of these contaminants can be easily removed by simply rinsing the towel in running water with a little soap. But most of them will require persistence and resourcefulness from you.

Grease stains are the most common stains on kitchen towels

It turns out that our grandmothers also knew how to deal with such dirt with folk remedies. We will tell you about these simple and reliable methods, as well as more modern methods. But first, here are some tips to help you avoid getting too dirty.

  1. Get several sets of kitchen towels and use them alternately, changing as often as possible. This will prevent them from getting too dirty and will last longer.
  2. White tea towels can be boiled with bleach. If they are not very dirty, feel free to wash them with other laundry.
  3. No need to grab onto the greasy handles of the stove, lids and pans with towels. This will save yourself from the daily wash. And even more so, you cannot wipe the dirty floor with such towels.
  4. After washing and drying, the towels must be ironed with an iron: they will become softer and less dirty.

Let's start washing

If, nevertheless, the dirt on the towel is deep, boiling is recommended. But we will look at this method later, and now we will tell you how you can do without it. You need to pre-soak the kitchen towels for a while. And this can be done in several ways.

Towels and detergents

There are many products to help you keep your kitchen towels clean and fresh.

Using salt when soaking

Pour cold or slightly lukewarm water into a bowl and add 5 tablespoons of salt to 5 liters of water. Stir well until dissolved and add dirty towels. Leave to soak for 1-2 hours or overnight, depending on the degree of soiling. After that, you can safely wash the towels in your usual way - manually or in an automatic machine.

You can also prepare a saline solution at the rate of 0.5 cups of salt for each towel. Wash them in very hot water the next morning.

Dishwashing detergents

These representatives of household chemicals, familiar to us for a long time, do an excellent job with dirt on towels. Dissolve a little dishwashing liquid in water, soak dirty towels for 10-30 minutes. Then wash with regular powder. This will help you easily remove greasy stains from the fabric.

If you need to wash white towels, add a few more drops of ammonia to the water while soaking. Then you won't need to use bleach.

By the way, not only dishwashing detergent can help you, but also "KROT", with which we clean water pipes. Pour 200-250 g of this substance into a bucket of some warm water, put dirty towels there and leave for about a day. Stir the contents of the bucket from time to time. Then rinse and wash as usual. This will not only remove stains, but also remove odors.

Laundry soap

This tool is time-tested, it is known to everyone and has not let anyone down. Laundry soap will remove grease, yellowness and unpleasant odors from your towels. Wet towels thoroughly and thoroughly rub them with laundry soap with a fatty acid content of at least 72%. Fold them in a plastic bag, tie it so that the air does not pass inside and leave it for a day. After that, simply rinse the towels.

Dry mustard

This product will help you clean and sanitize your kitchen towels well. Take mustard powder and dilute it in hot water to a sour cream consistency. Wet the towels, apply the resulting composition on them. Leave it on for a few hours or overnight, then wash and rinse.

Radical methods: boil and use vegetable oil

Too strong, old pollution will require more painstaking work. Here are some well-proven methods.

  1. Place dirty towels in a cooking pot. Pour in the water just enough to cover the towels. Add a little laundry soap, 100 g of silicate glue, mix. Boil for 15 minutes, then rinse immediately.

  2. Use bleach to boil towels. Better to take domestic funds, for example, popular in everyday life "White". Add as much funds as indicated in the instructions.
  3. Vegetable oil dissolves fats very well, therefore it is often used for washing kitchen utensils made of fabric. Add 2 tablespoons of simple dry bleach, such as Swan or Boss, to boiling water (for 1 bucket), 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil and a glass of detergent. Stir and fold dry towels into this mixture. Turn off heat immediately and leave to cool completely. After that, it is enough to rinse the laundry.
  4. Add 3 tablespoons of baking soda to very hot water, the same amount of washing powder, dry bleach and vegetable oil. In this mixture, the towels must be soaked overnight, and then washed in an automatic machine by selecting the "Quick wash" mode.
  5. If you need to wash towels without special chemicals, boil them in a baking soda solution. It is enough to dissolve 1 tablespoon of baking soda in 1 towel and boil for 15–20 minutes.
  6. On a coarse grater, grate the laundry soap (half a bar is enough) and mix with a handful of soda ash. Dissolve this mixture in enough water to take half of a large cooking pot. Fold tea towels inside and set on fire. After boiling water, turn the heat down and leave the container on the stove for 20 minutes. Then wash the towels in the machine.
