What gifts should not be given: popular superstitions and real reasons
When choosing a gift, people are often guided not only by the preferences of the addressee, but also by various superstitions. Why do we still believe that some things cannot be gifted? Or maybe there are real reasons why this or that gift simply cannot be good? To understand the problem, you have to study a little history.
Why you can't give certain things
Such restrictions on a gift can be imposed by both outdated signs and very real reasons.
Knives
As a rule, the ban on giving knives is pure superstition. It used to be believed that evil spirits live in sharp objects, and along with such a gift, the addressee receives their negative energy.
However, there is a much more prosaic and weighty reason. The knife is given for a holiday. Alcohol is common at festivities. And excessive drinking can make a person behave aggressively and even get involved in a fight. This is where the knife will play its evil role - the holiday can be overshadowed by unintentional murder and stabbing.
If the addressee does not suffer from an excessive love of alcohol, there is no rational reason to refuse such a gift.
Clock
It is impossible to trace exactly the roots of superstition regarding the gift of watches. One of the most common versions of the origin of omens is Chinese beliefs. The Chinese were convinced that such a gift was a wish for an early departure from life. Obviously, this is due to the fact that the clock measures time, and the flow of time brings death closer.
In Russia, such a superstition is most common - a watch presented to a beloved or beloved will lead to parting when it stops. This item will supposedly count down the happy minutes spent with a loved one. However, there is no rational reason to refuse such a gift.
All these superstitions apply to wristwatches and other types of watches.
Wallet
There are many conflicting signs around the wallet:
- giving a wallet to close relatives - to money problems for the whole family;
- a wallet presented to a birthday boy is a sign of excessive spending for the whole next year;
- if the addressee is much richer than the donor and higher in status, then such a gift will lead the recipient of the gift to poverty.
There are also a number of positive superstitions:
- it is possible and even recommended to give a wallet to a beloved person;
- You can give a wallet to a friend or friend by first putting a coin in it - this will provide him with wealth and easy money;
- to give a less wealthy person a red wallet means to share with him a part of your energy. Such a gift is a wish to improve the financial situation.
As with watches, all reasons are superstitious
A wallet is a beautiful and useful gift, so you shouldn't refuse it just because of superstition
Slippers
According to most, the presented slippers are a symbol of imminent separation. The most innocent superstitions predict a common parting. Less humane ones draw a parallel between this gift and the funeral (everyone has heard of funeral slippers).
The superstition that slippers predict parting has long been outdated. It is believed that about a hundred or two years ago, there were very few shoes in the houses of ordinary people, so giving a new pair to one of the household meant only a long journey and, therefore, separation.
The person giving slippers hardly thinks about your death - rather about your comfort.
Towel
The towel, like the slippers, is associated with the funeral rite by superstition. Previously, the house in which the deceased is located was marked with a towel hung out the window. Now this almost never occurs (except in small villages), but superstition continues to live on. If the addressee does not believe in him, feel free to present a fluffy towel as a gift.
Despite the omen, gift shops are full of various holiday towels with beautiful embroidery
Soap
Soaps and other hygiene products (shower gels, scrubs, washcloths, etc.) supposedly have negative energy that will be passed on to the recipient of the gift. Folk omens also assure that the person who received a bar of soap from you as a gift will be "washed away" from your life forever. But, apart from play on words and statements about negative energy, there is no reason to refuse donating hygiene products.
Especially popular is handmade fragrant soap, beautifully packaged in a gift box
Flowers in pots
The most common omen concerns giving flowers in pots to a sick person. If the plant has roots, then the sick person supposedly wants to be underground. Of course, this is just a sign. However, if the addressee is superstitious, you should not upset him with such a gift - a strong upset can really slow down recovery.
To make a good gift, choose an unpretentious plant - for example, some beautiful succulent
Rings and bracelets
The ring and bracelet are symbols of affection. Such a gift says: "You will only be mine / mine." For this reason, giving jewelry to someone other than a loved one is not worth it.
There are no signs associated with the ring, but such a gift clearly speaks of the romantic intentions of the donor
Why you can't give a gift in advance
It is believed that giving a gift to a birthday person can only be on his birthday or after, but not earlier. This superstition arose from the belief that the recipient of the gift might not live to see his holiday. However, there is also a completely rational reason. A gift received a little earlier may not cause such a strong emotional response as during a full-fledged holiday with all the attributes. Therefore, if there is an opportunity, it is worth waiting for the official celebration and presenting the gift as expected, in order to certainly make the birthday man happy.
In most cases, the prohibition on the donation of certain things is an empty omen that has no rational reasons. If the recipient of the gift is a non-superstitious person, then it is unlikely that he will not be delighted with a beautiful wallet, watch or cozy house slippers.
