In order to get healthy, strong tomato seedlings on time, you should sow the seeds at the optimal time. At the same time, it is necessary to take into account the ripening dates of tomatoes, and the region of residence, and the recommendations of the lunar calendar.

When to plant tomatoes for seedlings in 2019: general rules

Due to the fact that tomato varieties differ in terms of fruit ripening, the time for sowing will also shift somewhat depending on the species. Let's consider this with specific examples:

  1. The Ranny Dubinina variety has a growing season of 85–90 days. Seedlings of this variety can be planted in open ground on June 5–10 at the age of 50–55 days. After counting down from the approximate date of planting and adding to it the days necessary for germination, we get: 55 + 6 = 61. The sowing date in this case will be between 15 and 25 March. In this interval, you should choose a successful day according to the lunar calendar before sowing.

Mid-season tomato varieties take about 65 days to form mature seedlings

  2. We plan to plant the mid-season variety Gigant Novikova in a greenhouse in mid-May. By this time, the seedlings should be 60–65 days old. So, after counting down the time for seed germination, we get: 65 + 5 = 70. We count 70 days from May 15, we get approximately March 7. Now we will select the nearest successful date for sowing by checking with the lunar calendar

Features of planting tomato seedlings for regions

Before starting sowing, it is important to understand that its timing directly depends on the growing region. After all, it is possible to plant grown seedlings only after the threat of frost has passed. And depending on the climatic zone, this period may come somewhere at the end of April, and somewhere in the middle of June.

Table: sowing dates for tomatoes, taking into account the region

Region

Early varieties

(growing season 85-105 days)

Medium varieties

(growing season 105-120 days)

Late varieties

(growing season 120-140 days)

Northwest The end of March 8-15 March Not recommended
Middle zone of Russia Early April March 15-20 Early March
Ural, Siberia The end of March 10-15 March Not recommended
Southern regions, Ukraine Early April, seedless sowing is possible early March End of February - beginning of March

In the southern regions, it is even possible to grow tomatoes in a seedless way. Ultra-early maturing determinant varieties are suitable for him, for example:

  • Dwarf,
  • Grotto,
  • Cameo,
  • Dewdrop,
  • Snow Maiden.

Living in the North-West, I grow the vast majority of varieties in a greenhouse, I can add some early tomatoes under cover. I don't grow late-ripening varieties, because I'm afraid that instead of fruits I will get phytophthora. Therefore, the main date around which I can experiment a little is March 8th. The tomatoes sown at this time manage to form perfectly, but if they start to outgrow, I take them out to the veranda or to the northern windows in the house.

You can get a good harvest of tomatoes in almost every region of our country. To do this, you just need to choose the right varieties, sow them at favorable times, taking into account the lunar calendar. And to devote unfavorable days to rest and other useful activities.
