Is it time to sow peppers: the right planting dates in 2019

Sweet bell peppers are a favorite vegetable in our greenhouses and in beds with plastic cover. To get well-developed pepper seedlings on your own, you need to sow the seeds early enough. February is the month when you should already decide on the varieties, prepare everything you need for planting and start sowing, because peppers do not sprout quickly.

General terms

In order to correctly determine the optimal time for sowing pepper for seedlings, you need to make the following calculation: from the date of the proposed planting of seedlings in a greenhouse or in open ground, count back 70 - 75 days, since this is exactly how much it takes to be ready for planting. In addition, you need to add 7–8 days for seed germination.

For example, if you are planting pepper seedlings in a greenhouse in mid-May, then, counting back 70 - 75 days, we get the seed sowing date. It will be around February 26th. And given that pepper seeds germinate for a long time, you need to add another week, and you get the middle of February.

It is very important to provide the growing seedlings with sufficient light. Since the peppers are planted early, then, of course, additional lighting will be necessary for the seedlings in the first weeks. If the seedlings are sown in early February, then in the first three days they need to be illuminated for a whole day, and then reduced to 12 hours: 6 hours of natural light + 6 hours of artificial.

Moon calendar

The lunar calendar will help determine the optimal sowing time

If you adhere to the readings of the lunar calendar, then the following dates for sowing, planting or other work will be successful for peppers:

• January: 19, 20, 27, 29;
• In February: 6-8, 11-13, 20-25, 28;
• In March: 8-12, 15-20, 23-25, 27-29;
• In April: 1–4, 6–9, 11–13, 20, 21, 24–26, 29, 30;
• In May: 3, 4, 8-10, 17, 18, 21-23, 26-28;
• In June: 5-6, 13-15, 18-20.

New moon and full moon periods will be unfavorable for working with pepper. In 2019, they fall on the following dates:

• In January: 5, 6, 21;
• In February: 4, 5, 19;
• March: 6, 7, 21;
• April: 5, 19;
• In May: 5, 19;
• June: 3, 4, 17.

We sow pepper in central Russia

The middle zone of Russia and the Moscow region can be considered suitable for planting pepper from the second decade of February. But you can do this until mid-March. Mid-season varieties can be sown a little earlier, early ones later.

In the Urals and Siberia

If you sow pepper in the third decade of February, the fruits can be obtained at the end of July, i.e. approximately 135 days after sowing.

In the Stavropol Territory and Crimea

In the southern regions, mature seedlings can be planted in the greenhouse as early as early May. Therefore, you can start sowing seeds at the end of January.

When sowing peppers, there is the problem of a sufficiently long germination period. To speed up the emergence of seedlings, I use the biostimulator Zircon. I soak the seeds in a solution of the drug (2 drops / 100 ml of water) for 6 hours. Instead of Zircon, you can use Epin-extra in the same dosage. This procedure allows you to speed up germination by 4 - 5 days. You can then place the seeds between two damp kitchen sponges, secure them with rubber bands, and label them in a plastic bag. Keep a bag of seeds on the battery for a day, and send it to the refrigerator overnight, repeat for three days. With this procedure, seeds can hatch already on the fourth day.
