Tomato Wonder of the World: Liana with lemon-shaped fruits

Tomato wonder of the world
Tomato wonder of the world

Tomato Wonder of the World looks a bit like a lemon, but even this does not distinguish it from many other varieties of tomatoes. It is interesting in the shape of the plant, which is almost a liana: the stems themselves are not averse to twisting around the support, they need only a little help in this.

Description of the Wonder of the World variety, its characteristics, yield, growing region

The Wonder of the World tomato is no longer young, it has been grown for almost two decades. Created in a corporation with a very modest name “NK. LTD”, based in the Moscow region, was registered in the State Register of the Russian Federation in 2001. It is known that the Ukrainian breeder F. M. Tarasenko took an active part in the creation of the variety - the author of many interesting varieties and hybrids of tomatoes, among which there are also liana-like ones. It was from his hands that the tomatoes Hybrid-1, Hybrid-2 came out, he also recorded his surname in the name of the tomato Yubileiny Tarasenko.

Tomato Wonder of the World is approved for cultivation in all regions, without exception. Officially, the planting site is open ground, but where tomatoes, in principle, do not grow without shelter, it is planted in greenhouses. In principle, the height of the bush is such that they do not mind occupying greenhouse areas. This is an indeterminate variety, if you do not limit the growth of the bush, it can grow in height and up to 2.5 meters. The formation of a bush is required, traditionally the Wonder of the World is led in one or two stems. It is necessary to tie up not only the stems, but also rather heavy fruit brushes: after all, each of them can contain up to thirty tomatoes.

Fruit brushes are so heavy that growing without tying is out of the question.

The foliage of the bush is medium, but the leaves are unusually large. The first fruit cluster is located only above the eleventh leaf, the subsequent ones - after three to five. In terms of ripening, the tomato belongs to the middle-late, sometimes it is considered even late-ripening. Slightly ribbed fruits have a shape called obovate, similar to a lemon, and when ripe have the same lemon color: from light yellow to bright yellow.

Fleshy tomatoes, not very large, really, like an average lemon: their weight is about 80 g, the largest fruits grow up to 120 g. There are only two seed nests. The taste of the fruit is characterized as good, the purpose is universal. In principle, at present, you can pick up another variety for salads, with more delicious fruits, so the Wonder of the World is increasingly considered a pickling variety: whole tomatoes look spectacular in jars. The yield is stable, high: with proper care, at least 12 kg of tomatoes are harvested from one bush. True, the bushes have to be planted quite far from each other, so the yield per square meter is by no means the most outstanding.

Disease resistance of the Wonder of the World tomato is good, even late blight practically does not affect it. True, there is a high risk of tobacco mosaic disease. Since the roots of the plant are powerful, spread both to the sides and in depth, it tolerates prolonged droughts well.

Appearance

The fruits of the Wonder of the World tomato are quite recognizable: in few varieties they resemble ripe lemons so much. It is especially easy to guess the variety when looking at the fruiting bushes: tall, curly stems are strewn with heavy clusters of lemon-shaped tomatoes. This is not to say that in appearance the fruits evoke a feeling of excellent taste, and this, unfortunately, is true. But few people dare to eat lemon directly without sugar! Apparently, the memory of a person somehow works in this case too, unmistakably saying that these tomatoes should be either cut into a salad, seasoned with everything necessary, or preserved.

Advantages and disadvantages, features, differences from other varieties

Tomato Wonder of the World is interesting for its uniqueness. It is the shape of the bush and the type of tomatoes that can be considered the main distinguishing feature of the variety. After all, the solid size of the bush does not lead to the fact that super-high yields can be harvested from a unit area, and the spectacular pretty fruits are not very tasty. Even the State Register misleads the consumer by printing information on one page that the variety is salad, and on the other that it is pickled. The variety is not too elementary in its care, which is a limitation in its use by novice vegetable growers.

The advantages of the variety are:

  • interesting appearance of the fruits, in connection with which they go well on the market;
  • elongation of fruiting (but in cold areas all the fruits do not have time to ripen);
  • good drought resistance;
  • low risk of late blight disease;
  • very high yield per plant;
  • versatility of crop use.

It is believed that these tomatoes are especially good when salted: both the composition of the pulp contributes to this, and the interesting appearance. They can be salted both in barrels and in ordinary jars. The juice is considered tasty, but unusual in color, so these tomatoes are almost never processed into juice. The variety is also important as a decorative one: the liana itself is beautiful with tomatoes, and the tomatoes on the table.

The disadvantages of the variety mainly include the need for the correct formation of the bush and careful repeated tying of both the stems and individual fruit brushes. In unprotected soil, flaws in the tying can lead to breakage of the stems by strong winds.

Of course, the Wonder of the World variety differs significantly from most others, including yellow-fruited varieties. At the same time, a lot of liana-shaped tomatoes are known to date. Many of them came out of the hands of F. M. Tarasenko, who formulated the basic principles of growing such vines. In addition to the tomatoes Hybrid-1, Hybrid-2, Hybrid-5 and Hybrid-6, which have never received more sonorous names, these are, for example, Yubileiny Tarasenko with four-kilogram bunches or Kombitomat, from one bush of which you can get up to 20 kg of tomatoes.

Tomato Jubilee Tarasenko in many respects resembles the Wonder of the World, although their fruits are completely different

Actually, all variations of the famous De Barao variety can be attributed to liana-like. All varieties and hybrids from this list have similar characteristics: tall bushes, thin but branchy shoots, high yields per bush, and the fruits are located in large clusters. Most varieties are versatile and taste good or great. In this extensive series, the Wonder of the World is one of the usual representatives, with its own advantages and disadvantages.

Features of growing and planting tomato Wonder of the world

Like all liana tomatoes, the Wonder of the World is grown in a slightly different way than even the most common indeterminants. Of course, since this tomato is late maturing, it can only be grown through the seedling stage. Seeds are sown quite early, many gardeners are already at the end of February. They try to dive seedlings into rather large individual pots: by the time they are transplanted into the garden, the seedlings are already a small tree. The rest of the process of preparing seedlings is unremarkable.

The Miracle of the World is planted in the garden bed freely: if there is room, then even according to the scheme 1.0 x 1.5 meters. The very process of planting seedlings is peculiar: after all, the roots of this tomato are able to penetrate to a depth of one and a half meters. Therefore, the process is similar to planting berry bushes: for each bush, a whole planting hole is dug with dimensions of 50 x 50 cm and a depth of up to 40 cm. Up to two buckets of humus, a good handful of wood ash and up to 50 g of complex mineral fertilizer are placed in the hole. Pits are often prepared since autumn.

Seedlings of the Wonder of the World can grow so high that even in a spacious hole it will have to be planted almost lying

Most often, the bush is formed into two stems, but they often do differently: two plants are planted in the pit, each of which is led in a single-stem form. Emerging stepchildren are systematically removed. The tie to the stakes does not solve the problem of uniform illumination of the fruits, therefore they try to make a trellis, to which growing stems are tied from time to time, and then heavy fruit brushes. In the open field at the end of July, the main stem is pinched; in greenhouse cultivation, this is done in mid-August.

Until mid-summer, the Miracle of the World requires abundant watering and obligatory loosening, with the beginning of the coloring of the fruits, watering is stopped. Top dressing is given three times according to the scheme traditional for indeterminants (the last time nitrogen is not added). During the flowering period, foliar feeding with boron fertilizers is desirable. Tomatoes are harvested as they ripen, it is possible in a state of blanche ripeness.

Reviews

A miracle of the world is a tomato “for an amateur”: it is not characterized by excellent fruit taste, but it will be quite interesting to plant 3-4 bushes on the site. A good harvest is guaranteed, but you have to tinker with this tomato.
