Without soil and a pot: how I grew live tulips in a vase, when it's fierce winter outside the window
I have a friend who loves flowers and devotes all her free time to them. As I come to visit her, I cannot stop admiring the beauty and believe that she grows all this herself.
Once I saw her tulips in the middle of February, growing straight from the bulbs. Such uncut flowers will bloom and delight for a long time. And most importantly, they grow without land.
I don't like messing with the ground, wasting time planting and replanting, but I love these flowers. Therefore, I found out from a friend the secret of growing in an apartment in winter. It turned out to be not difficult at all.
To begin with, I took a jar with a wide mouth. A friend's flowers grew in a wide glass vase. She poured stones there so as to close the bottom. You can buy expanded clay at a flower shop or balls that absorb moisture.
I bought the largest tulip bulbs, no damage. The healthier they look, the better. I kept them in the refrigerator for 3-4 months. A kind of "winter" is necessary for them, otherwise they will not grow.
Then I put the bulbs in the jar with the roots down and added some more stones to keep the bulbs upright and not fall off.
She poured water, which had settled from chlorine for at least a day, into a jar so that only the root of the onion could be reached. If the whole bulb is in water, it will rot and the flower will not grow. Therefore, it is best to keep tulips in a glass vessel so that the water level can be seen.
I put the jar in a bright, warm place. The main thing is not in direct sunlight: tulips do not like them. My bulbs were on the windowsill, where the sun got only 2 hours a day.
Given the dryness in the room due to central heating, the water level must be monitored every day. Moisture evaporates faster than tulips can absorb it. I even had to cover the battery with a blanket. There is a positive side to this: water does not have time to stagnate, does not become cloudy and does not emit unpleasant odors.
The result was not long in coming. Delicate spring tulips flaunted on my table in a few weeks. And outside the window at that time a blizzard began to blow.
It turns out that in this way you can grow any bulbous flowers in winter. I plan to plant fragrant hyacinths. I really love them.
