What grows in the garden: strawberries or strawberries?
Today, strawberries, as a cultivated plant, are very rarely found on the land plots of summer residents and gardeners. Usually gardeners and gardeners call this another plant - garden strawberries. In fact, berry crops are close relatives. They belong to the same genus Strawberry (Latin Fragária) of the Pink family.
Strawberries, correctly referred to as musky strawberries or nutmeg, are bisexual plants with male and female bushes. This feature greatly affects the yield of the plant. And the size of the berries in garden strawberries is much larger.
Strawberry fruits are round
The scientific name for the garden strawberry is Fragaria ananassa, pineapple strawberry. Shrubs love sunny areas and tolerate drought well. Garden strawberry is the most widespread species in the culture.
Garden strawberry is distinguished by its large-fruited and high yield
The history of the creation of the variety of garden strawberries Korona
The Korona variety was created in 1972 by specialists from the Institute for the Breeding of Horticultural Crops in Wageningen, Holland. The parent varieties were Tamella and Induka.
Due to the similarity of the climatic conditions of the Netherlands and European regions of central Russia, Dutch selection allowed the Korona garden strawberry variety to take root in the Russian middle lane. The variety is able to withstand Russian frosts down to -20-22 ⁰С without shelter.
Berries of the Korona variety of a beautiful regular shape, color from bright red to dark red
Garden strawberry Crown: main characteristics
The Korona garden strawberry is a medium-ripening variety. In the central regions of European Russia, the first berries appear around mid-June. The yield of the variety depends on the conditions of care and ranges from 500 g to 900 g per plant bush. A rather long fruiting period is characteristic.
Strawberry bush The crown is small, open, with large concave leaves. The foliage of the plant is medium, has a powerful peduncle.
Garden strawberry Corona tolerates frost well, is resistant to powdery mildew, but is affected by gray rot and white spot. The fruits are medium in size, the weight of the berry ranges from 15 g to 35 g. The fruits have a regular conical shape. The berry can be either bright red or a fairly dark crimson hue when fully ripe. The surface of the berry is glossy. The pulp of the fruit is juicy and sugary, has a noticeable strawberry aroma.
A characteristic feature of the Korona variety is the difficult separation of the stalk from the berry. Due to the pulp of medium density, which has a high juiciness, this variety is not very good for freezing and long-distance transportation. But the dessert qualities allow the Korona variety to be in demand for cultivation on land plots of summer residents and gardeners. The berry is used fresh and in the form of canned preparations: preserves, jams, jellies and compotes.
Table: advantages and disadvantages of the variety
Advantages of the Korona variety | Disadvantages of the Korona variety |
High yield | Large berries only at the first harvest, then the fruits become smaller |
Long fruiting period | The berry is difficult to separate from the stalk |
Winter hardiness | Fruits do not tolerate transportation and freezing well. |
Powdery mildew resistant | The variety is not resistant to gray mold, damaged by white spot |
Planting and care: main features
Garden strawberries are among plants that prefer well-lit areas. It is important that the site is protected from the wind. The variety of garden strawberries Korona is no exception, he loves sunny, sheltered from the wind areas.
It is good if legumes or cereals, beets or carrots, garlic, dill or marigolds were growing on the land allocated for strawberry beds. Do not plant garden strawberries after potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers or cabbage.
The Korona variety is not very drought-resistant, therefore, to get a good harvest, a drip irrigation system should be organized on the site
Before planting, the land should be prepared, weeds removed and fertilized - about 7 kg of humus per 1 square meter, 30 g of superphosphate and ammonium nitrate each. You can plant garden strawberries in early spring, late summer and early autumn. The plots intended for planting in spring are dug up in the fall, and the beds for planting in late summer and early autumn are prepared 15–20 days before new plantings are planted.
The seedlings are placed vertically in the hole, the root collar should be at the level of the soil surface. It is important not to cover the heart with earth when planting, otherwise the young plant may die. The bushes of the Korona garden strawberry are compact in size, so the distance between the plants during planting can be about 20 cm. After planting, they must be watered and mulched. The crown is not highly drought-resistant, so it is worth considering the possibility of drip irrigation.
In one place, garden strawberries grow well and give high yields with appropriate care for four years. Then the number of fruits harvested decreases sharply, and strawberry beds should be organized in a new area. Old beds need to be dug up and prepared for planting vegetables. It will be possible to return to the place of the previous location of the garden strawberry bed no earlier than in five years.

How does the Korona variety propagate?
Like any garden strawberry, the Korona variety can reproduce with a mustache, dividing a bush and seeds.
Reproduction by antennae
The most effective way is to propagate the Korona variety by forming rosettes on the mustache of the mother plant.
- The healthiest bush with the best yield is chosen for propagation.
- The ground around the mustache is loosened and watered.
- Young rosettes are slightly pressed into the soil.
- After the appearance of full-fledged four to six sheets, the mustache is cut off.
- The young plant is transplanted to a new location.
After the appearance of 4–6 full-fledged leaves, a young plant formed on the mustache of the mother bush is ready for transplantation
Dividing the bush
To get material for planting, you can use the method of dividing the bush into several parts. For this:
- They choose a bush at the age of 2-3 years, well developed, without signs of diseases, which has given a good harvest before.
- Dig it out and divide it into several parts with a sharp knife. Divide so that each part of the planting material has a good rosette of several leaves and a developed root.
- The seedlings obtained in this way are planted in prepared beds and watered well.
When propagating by dividing the bush into parts, it is important that each new plant has a developed rosette and a good root system
Growing from seeds
Seed propagation of garden strawberries is the most labor-intensive method. But sometimes gardeners use this method as well, getting good seedlings. For this:
- Before planting, the seeds are placed in Epin's solution, and then sown in pre-prepared containers with soil. Sowing depth approx. 0.5 cm.
- The container is covered with glass and left in a room with a temperature of + 20-25 ° C.
- After emergence, the container is transferred to a place with very good lighting.
- Then a pick is carried out twice: the first time with the appearance of one true leaf, the second time - in the presence of well-developed three or four leaf blades.
Obtaining seedlings of garden strawberries from seeds is the most difficult method of reproduction, in which the varietal characteristics of the mother plant may not be inherited by the seedlings
Diseases and pests of garden strawberry varieties Korona
The Korona garden strawberry has shown itself to be quite resistant to fungal diseases, in particular, to powdery mildew. But it is susceptible to gray mold infection. Usually, the disease cannot be resisted by plants in thickened plantings with poor ventilation of the soil cover. Strawberry fruits turn brown and are covered with a grayish fluffy bloom. To avoid contamination of strawberry plantings with garden gray rot, mulching should be carried out in time. You can use straw or sawdust for this. In this case, the berry will not come into contact with the ground.
As a preventive measure, plants should be treated before the beginning of the growing season with a solution of Bordeaux liquid 3-4%. You should also process the plantings with Azocene (20 g per 10 l of water). Processing is carried out after removing the last berries from the bushes.
Fruits affected by gray mold must be collected and destroyed
Another problem for gardeners involved in the cultivation of Korona garden strawberries is the defeat of the leaves with white spot. At first, only small spots of a reddish color are noticeable on the leaves, then they grow, their center turns white. Then the peduncles and whiskers of plants are affected, they darken and brown spots appear. All this negatively affects the yield of the bush.
White spot affects the leaves of the plant, the peduncles gradually darken and become thin
Red root rot can also infect Korona garden strawberries. Such bushes stop growing, the leaves acquire a bluish tint. The roots of a diseased plant rot. At the base, they turn bright red. To avoid infection with red root rot, only healthy seedlings should be used for planting in the ground and the rules of crop rotation should be observed. To combat red root rot, Topsin M and Fundazol are used.
Garden strawberries can be affected by insect pests. Aphids mainly damage young leaves, have a negative effect on fruits and their appearance. To combat aphids, spraying with an infusion of garlic (3-5 heads of garlic per 3 liters of water, leave for a week) is used.
Aphids cause significant harm to young leaves
Bushes affected by a strawberry mite wither, their leaves curl, acquiring a dark color. To prevent damage by a pest, treatment with Karbofos or Colloidal sulfur during the growing season (8 g per 10 liters of water) is necessary.
Strawberry mite interferes with the development of plants, leading to the loss of fruits before they ripen
The weevil gnaws the peduncles, which reduces the yield of garden strawberries. To combat this pest, the soil surface is treated with an iodine solution twice with a break of 10 days immediately after the snow cover disappears (half a teaspoon per 10 liters of water). You can use spraying with Inta-Vir (for 500 g of water, 1 tablet of the drug).
The fruit on the peduncle that the weevil has bitten will no longer be
Harvesting, storage and use features
In the climatic conditions of the middle zone of the European part of Russia, the harvest of garden strawberries of the Korona variety begins in mid-June. With good care, the yield of the variety is up to 900 g from one bush. The weight of the berry is 15–35 g. A characteristic feature of the Korona variety is that the berries taken from the bushes during the first harvest are much larger than the fruits of subsequent harvests. The rather difficult separation of the stalk from the berry should be noted.
Berries of garden strawberries of the Korona variety are good both fresh and processed into jam and jam
The fruits are juicy, with good sugar content and a characteristic strawberry aroma. It is a great dessert product on the table and fresh, immediately after removal from the bush, and in the form of jelly, preserves and jams. Due to the pulp of medium density and high juiciness, the berries of the Korona garden strawberry are unsuitable for long-term transportation and are not suitable for freezing.
