Choosing a chandelier for the kitchen skillfully
The chandelier in the kitchen is undoubtedly important for its functionality, it serves as a lighting device both above the work surface and above the dining table. The chandelier is of no less importance in terms of design, and often its task is to create a significant accent in the overall interior of the room.

The choice of chandeliers for kitchens of various sizes and layouts
Oddly enough, for me it is the breadth of the assortment that is the biggest problem, creating difficulties when choosing my own chandelier for the kitchen that meets all the criteria. Until it comes to choosing a specific lamp, it seems that you can find the right design for every taste.
Therefore, it is important to determine in advance the criteria for choosing a chandelier for the kitchen:
- dimensions of the kitchen and its layout;
- interior style solution;
- functional load of the lamp;
- financial capabilities of the owners;
- individual preferences.
Of course, this is not a complete list. For each case, the selection criteria are very individual. Someone, perhaps, will find the type of bulbs and the ease of replacing them important, and someone will never agree to hang a lamp in the kitchen, which is very difficult to care for due to the abundance of small details and unusual decor. But it is advisable to clearly formulate all your requirements before going to the store.
A chandelier with numerous decorative elements and pendants will decorate any interior, but it will be quite difficult to care for it
The same chandelier will look different in kitchens of different sizes and layouts, so one of the important criteria is the size of the room. In a small space, a bulky lamp will look inappropriate, and in spacious kitchens, on the contrary, small, small chandeliers will be lost. Respect for proportions is one of the main conditions when choosing chandeliers for the kitchen.
Features of choosing a chandelier for a small kitchen
I often come across beautiful pictures on the Internet with designer interiors, advice on the placement of furniture, life hacks for storing utensils marked "for small kitchens". I can imagine how happy the owners of really tiny kitchens - 5, 6, 7 m 2 - would be such spaces, presented as "small". My many years of experience in retail shows how shoppers make mistakes when choosing a seemingly small item in a sales area that is huge compared to a room in an apartment. Remember proportionality - believe me, a chandelier that seems small to you in the trading floor will look completely different in your kitchen!
Five tips for choosing a chandelier for a small kitchen:
- Measure in advance the maximum possible height (distance from the ceiling) and the diameter of the chandelier.
- For kitchens with low ceilings, opt for a ceiling shade or chandelier with a short stem, which will save space in height.
- Consider whether a complex chandelier is suitable for your small kitchen, even if it suits the style. Give preference to quieter lighting designs, as too complex a shape will visually "overload" a small kitchen.
- Use chandeliers with upward light.
- Calculate the required lamp wattage. If there is only one chandelier, then it should be enough to illuminate the entire room. On average, the illumination rate in the kitchen for halogen lamps is 30-35 W / m 2, for fluorescent lamps - from 8 W / m 2, for LED lamps - 2-3 W / m 2. This means that in a small kitchen with an area of 7 m 2, the total power, for example, of halogen lamps must be at least 210 W.
Photo gallery: examples of chandeliers for a small kitchen
- The diameter of the plafond should be proportional to the dimensions of the kitchen
- The simple shape and short leg of the chandelier will be appropriate in a small kitchen
- The ceiling shade provides the greatest savings in height
- Light directed to the ceiling visually increases the volume of the room
Features of choosing a chandelier for a medium and spacious kitchen
In a spacious kitchen, one light source is not enough - both functionally and in terms of visual division into zones - work, dining, recreation areas, etc. Lighting plays a key role in space zoning, emphasizing the functions of interior elements.
Four tips for choosing a chandelier for a medium to large kitchen:
- Use hanging chandeliers in large kitchens. Adjust their height taking into account the convenience of all family members.
- Calculate the power of the light sources in accordance with the above regulations for each of the zones. There should be enough light for the entire kitchen space.
-
Provide separate lighting for each area:
- if a hood is placed above the island, then light is already built into it. If not, a bright chandelier is needed here;
- a spacious kitchen can have a soft seating area with a sofa or armchairs. As a rule, it is supplemented with floor lamps or sconces, but a chandelier placed above the sofa will perfectly cope with the role of zoning. Not every kitchen has a sofa. If you are one of those lucky ones, arrange the lighting correctly;
- regardless of the style of the room, the dining table is the main element, the semantic center of the kitchen. Lighting of round, long tables combined with a bar counter is worked out taking into account their size, style and shape. Above long rectangular tables for several persons, one lamp is not enough, it is necessary to uniformly illuminate the entire surface. Above round, square or small rectangular tables, light is placed above the center - be it a classic lamp with a lampshade or a chandelier with suspensions.
- Use chandeliers with dimmers - dimmers. In large kitchens, it is convenient to use a different level of light output for each zone. Sometimes you need to dim the lights in the recreation area, increase the lighting above the work area, adjust the lampshade light above the dining table to suit the mood. It is in such cases that the ability to dim light sources will come in handy.
Photo gallery: examples of zoning space with light
- The lighting of the island is built into the hood, and a volumetric lamp is located above the dining table.
- Chandelier light highlights the soft area in the kitchen
- One lamp looks logical above the round table
- A row of identical or combined lamps will help to create uniform bright lighting over a long table.
- To illuminate the island and the working area, a chandelier, ceiling spots and LED lighting of the cabinets above the working area are used
- The height of the suspensions is adjustable depending on the size of the room and the existing requirements for lighting
Features of choosing a chandelier for an elongated kitchen
Artificial lighting of an elongated room can be easily made uniform by placing several lamps. Natural daylight works great near the window, but in the area of the far working surface it can be dark even during the day - be sure to place spotlights in it in addition to the chandeliers. It is not recommended to install a bus of several lamps along the kitchen - this option will only aggravate the unnecessary effect. Here are some techniques that designers use in such cases:
-
Symmetrical placement of paired chandeliers.
Symmetrically located chandeliers in a long narrow kitchen visually divide the space into two parts, illuminating all corners
-
Installing a lightbox almost the entire length of the ceiling.
Thanks to the design of the plafond, the long narrow ceiling itself becomes a light source
-
The use of a lamp of an unusual shape on suspensions, if the height of the ceiling allows.
The accent lamp attracts the eye, diverting attention from the elongated space
-
The choice in favor of a lamp from several plafonds on suspensions across the kitchen. He will visually make the kitchen wider (do not forget about the proportions!) - the idea here is precisely in placing the lamp on the short side of the room.
When placed laterally, a lamp from several shades on a long base will visually make your kitchen a little wider
More tips for choosing a chandelier for your kitchen regardless of size
If you choose a chandelier with LEDs or energy-saving bulbs, pay attention to the shade of the lighting. The color temperature of the light is indicated on the package. The unit of measurement is Kelvin (K). The lower this value, the warmer (yellow) the glow will be. Light from a bulb with a high color temperature has a bluish tint. For the kitchen, choose warm light up to 3500 K - it is this shade that is more pleasing to the eye, it creates an atmosphere of calm and comfort. Plus, it will help your dishes look appetizing.
Pay attention to what the chandelier is made of. The only requirement for the materials of chandeliers in the kitchen is that they should be easy to clean and not deteriorate from the use of cleaning agents. The most convenient from this point of view are glass, crystal, metal, plastic, although there are other options:
- for the manufacture of Japanese-style chandeliers, special paper is used, but it is the least durable and has restrictions on fire safety (it is recommended to install energy-saving bulbs, and if an incandescent lamp is used, then its power should not exceed 60 W and in no case should it come into contact with paper);
-
wood chandeliers should be covered with a protective layer from small insects that are attracted by light and heat;
It is recommended to cover all wooden parts of the chandelier with special protective compounds against small insects
- It is advisable to use classic fabric lampshades only in large spaces where the dining table is located quite far from the working area, otherwise hot steam, oil splashes, etc., may get onto the lamp during cooking.
An equally important factor in practical maintenance is form - the numerous curls of horns and pendants of classic chandeliers require more time-consuming maintenance than laconic modern chandeliers with a minimum of details.
I confess that I will not follow the last advice - I will not be stopped by the difficulties of leaving if stylistically the kitchen and the chandelier find each other.
Chandeliers for interiors in different styles
Modern space is always eclectic, it is more and more difficult to define a pure interior style, and sometimes it is simply impossible. Modern classics combine traditional canons and modern laconicism, the loft "creeps" into small apartments, being originally the style of huge spaces of abandoned factories. Styles of different peoples, having their own names - Provence, Scandinavian, English, etc., gently borrow elements from each other, creating an individual space, harmonious for a particular person.
Today, pure style will look heavy, and vice versa, elements, hints and characteristics added in the correct proportions will make the interior individual and truly stylish.
Non-obvious tricks when choosing a chandelier:
- do not try to choose a chandelier strictly for the style of the kitchen. The only thing that cannot be neglected is harmony, that is, how much the design of the lamp fits into the general mood of the kitchen;
- look through the many pictures in interior magazines, photos on the web, proposals in catalogs - this will help determine the desired characteristics of the chandelier.
I urge you to distinguish between the concepts of interior style and chandelier style, since eclecticism allows you to use lamps, which we would identify as belonging to one direction, in the design of kitchens of a different style. In real interiors, I have repeatedly admired such mixtures.
The style of the luminaire can be expressed clearly, unambiguously, or it can be slightly indicated by material, details, color. An absurdly solemn multi-arm gilded chandelier will look in a minimalistic interior. But the same classic with light glass shades and straight holders will successfully fit into the modern style, and even into the "high-tech". There is no need to try on an "industrial" lamp with a black metal shade in the "loft" style for a delicate Provence, but light light shades on suspensions will be organic for both a light loft and modern Provence.
Guided by your sense of style and harmony, feel free to combine lamps and interior styles such as modern, minimalism, Provence, Scandinavian. Minimalism, hi-tech and loft will also make friends.
Oriental, African ethno-directions are not combined with other styles, their originality complicates combinatorics
Chandeliers for modern interiors
Laconicism, eclecticism and functionality are my vision of modern style. Without pretending to be complete, I will illustrate these signs with examples.
Photo gallery: laconicism is the basis of modern style
- One of the elements of modern style are functional lamps.
- Glass and light play create a laconic interior, you shouldn't overload it with details
- Chandeliers in different styles blend harmoniously in a modern kitchen
Purity of lines, ergonomic designs, calmness of colors. Chandeliers support this style with simple shapes and materials - glass and metal.
Photo gallery: eclecticism is an integral feature of our time
- Non-traditional chandelier light brings classic marble countertops to life
- Against the background of glass showcases and thin glasses, it is difficult to imagine another chandelier
- The kitchen refers us to the Provence style, and the lamp makes the interior super modern
The use of elements and objects from a different style is important for a modern space - this technique makes the interior more individual and lively. The light in kitchen interiors, presented at the International Furniture Salon in Milan, illustrates the principle of eclecticism in the choice of details. Modern chandeliers will equally harmoniously decorate kitchens in different styles - "modern classic", "loft", "hi-tech", "modern". A sense of style and a sense of proportion are two criteria that determine the harmony of using a particular model.
Photo gallery: spider chandelier - a subject of modern design
- Black shades and graphic black wires add brutality to the chandelier
- Delicate lamps without shades refer to classic multi-track chandeliers
- The combination of strict black shades and small open lamps is not overloaded with details
- Six thin wire lampshades will look harmonious not only in a modern style
In online articles, the popular spider chandelier is attributed to the loft style. I saw with my own eyes the interiors of my favorite designers (unfortunately, I can't give examples of photos) - the spider chandelier is organic in the kitchen in the classic style, in the high-tech style, and even in the Provence style. There is only one limitation - observe the proportions of the chandelier and the kitchen. This option is not suitable for rooms with low ceilings.
Tips for choosing a modern kitchen chandelier
Remember simplicity and brevity, avoid:
- pretentious forms,
- gilding,
- overloaded with decor,
- multicolor,
- excessive solemnity in the design of chandeliers.
Pay attention to the functionality of the lighting fixtures, think about whether you need:
- height adjustment of the pendant lamp,
- lighting brightness control,
- using the energy saving function of lamps,
- inclusion of lighting in the home automation system.
Chandeliers for classic interiors
The classic style in the interior assumes calm natural tones, symmetrical arrangement of furniture and decor elements, the use of traditional materials, the use of textiles.
Classic interiors are characterized by:
- chandeliers with lampshades,
- three-arm chandeliers from Soviet times,
- multi-arm solemn chandeliers with pendants,
- chandeliers imitating a candlestick with many burning candles.
In modern versions, the crystal of the pendants can be replaced with glass or plastic, the fabric of the lampshades - with specialized synthetic materials, nevertheless, the classic style of such chandeliers can be easily read.
Photo gallery: classic chandeliers
- Crystal and gilding of a multi-arm chandelier with pendants are signs of the classic style
- The classic formal chandelier is an important element of the kitchen style.
- Olive kitchen furniture and crystal chandelier trimmings complement the classic interior style
- White color and light construction of the chandelier make it a classic
- Plafonds in small lampshades can be considered a tribute to tradition
Most often, classic-style chandeliers are heavy and large and can be used in spacious kitchens with high ceilings. As a rule, classic chandeliers are mounted to the ceiling on a hook, so a decorative bowl is included in the package.
Chandeliers for loft-style interiors
In its pure form, the loft style is almost impossible to apply to real space, but its key elements - brick, metal, pipes and electrical wiring "in sight" - are actively used in kitchen interiors.
Tips for choosing loft-style lamps:
- the style is applicable only in rooms with high ceilings, so choose hanging chandeliers;
- lamps can both emphasize the style of the loft, and lighten it - use this to create the effect you need;
- chandeliers for this style can be made of metal or glass. Black metal shades with large details will create the necessary accents, light metal of a simple shape or glass will be more neutral.
Here are some options for lighting design in the tradition of this style:
-
Pendant lamps in dark "factory" cases, located on a long rod, refer to industrial premises, it is difficult to imagine them anywhere else except in a loft-style kitchen.
Industrial design of the luminaires emphasizes style while enhancing the "factory" motives
-
There is a style that some designers call "light loft" - the lamps here are "light", although they support the desired mood with wrought-iron lampshades.
The design of the chandeliers matches the lightweight version of the loft style
-
Lamps in light metal shades will be organic in other design options.
Simple metal shades are easy to imagine in a modern minimalist kitchen
Chandeliers for interiors in ethnic styles
Traveling, we are imbued with the culture of those places where we felt good and comfortable, and when we return, we want to recreate a part of that mood at home. Furniture, tableware and textiles created in centuries-old traditions, typical colors and decor, use of patterns and ornaments typical for a certain region are signs of any of the ethnic styles.
Whether it be chandeliers with characteristic African motifs or oriental-style lampshades, minimalism of Japanese paper lanterns, coziness, clean lines and comfort of Scandinavian lamps or delicate natural Provence pendants - chandeliers in ethnic styles are demanding on the overall harmony of the kitchen space.
Photo gallery: chandeliers in various ethnic styles
- Metal, shape, characteristic patterns make it possible to unambiguously attribute the chandelier to the oriental style
- Simplicity and naturalness distinguish Provence style chandeliers
- To reflect the feeling of coziness, comfort and well-being in Scandinavian culture there is the concept of "hygge" - the art of being happy
- A characteristic feature of the Japanese-style interior - a minimum of details - also manifests itself in the lighting.
Chandeliers can both emphasize the authenticity of ethnic style and soften it. The key principle of modern design - the mixing of styles - allows you to "calm" the bright features of any ethnic interior with simple shapes and materials of modern chandeliers.
Chandelier mounting methods
Chandeliers can be suspended or overhead, with many small or large shades, or with one shade. A chandelier can be small, but heavy (for example, forged) or large, voluminous, but light (for example, paper or fabric). Depending on the design and weight, the chandelier in the kitchen can be fixed in three ways - using a hook, using a bracket or strip, and directly to the ceiling.
How to choose a mounting option for a chandelier
Depending on the size and weight of the luminaire, the complete set may include a decorative bowl for masking a hook or strip - single or cross.
The mounting method depends on:
- from the design of the chandelier and its configuration;
- on which ceiling it is mounted on - on the main one or suspended (plasterboard or tension).
Hook
Light chandeliers weighing up to 5 kg are attached to a metal hook with a thread; a dowel is used for a concrete ceiling. Products weighing more than 5 kg are suspended on an anchor bolt with a cross section of 10 mm 2 with spacers that will prevent the chandelier fixed to the ceiling from being pulled out.
The hook mount is suitable for chandeliers that include a decorative bowl to hide the fasteners. It slides freely along the main rod, is fixed in its upper part and allows you to easily adjust the height of the chandelier.
The attachment point is hidden by a decorative bowl
Video: attaching a three-arm chandelier to a hook
On the bar
The chandelier package may include a metal bar for fastening. In this case, you need to insert two screws into it and fix them, setting the distance between them, taking into account the placement of the holes on the chandelier plate. Subsequently, the screws are covered with decorative fastening nuts. The bar itself must be tightly attached to the ceiling with self-tapping screws. For light luminaires, the strip has one mounting plane; heavier luminaires are mounted on a cross-shaped base.
If the chandelier kit includes a special fixing bar, it is installed on the ceiling, and the chandelier is hung on it.
Directly to the ceiling
The small and lightweight luminaire can be mounted directly to the ceiling. For installation, the metal plate of the base of the chandelier must be attached to the surface of the ceiling and the attachment points must be marked with a pencil. Then drill holes for self-tapping screws and fix the plate, and screw the lamp to it with the screws provided in the kit.
Lightweight luminaires with flat base can be mounted directly to the ceiling
The ceiling mount works well for a stylish trendy spider chandelier. Flexible wires with lamps at the ends are retracted from the center, for each of which there is a separate fastener. The lamps can be adjusted in height.
Each wire is fixed to the ceiling with a separate fastener
Features of fixing chandeliers to a plasterboard ceiling and to a stretch ceiling
Before installing a plasterboard or stretch ceiling, it is necessary to outline the location of the chandelier, the type of installation and the size of the fasteners. The key word is advance.
In the case of mounting the chandelier on a hook:
- At the point where the chandelier is attached in the concrete ceiling, a hole is drilled for mounting the hook.
- Mount plasterboard or stretch ceiling.
- A plastic ring is installed in the stretch ceiling in a pre-designated place and a hole with a diameter less than the diameter of the bowl covering the mounting elements is cut out; a hole is drilled in the plasterboard sheet;
- A hook is fixed to the concrete ceiling.
-
A chandelier is mounted, the hole is closed with a decorative bowl.
A hole is drilled in the plasterboard, in which the hook is located, mounted in the concrete ceiling
When mounted on a single or cross strip, at the point where the chandelier is attached, one of the elements is pre-mounted to the concrete ceiling:
- wooden block;
- a platform made of moisture-resistant plywood with a size of approximately 300x300 mm. It is mounted in the center on a hook installed in the concrete ceiling, and in the corners - on four adjustable metal posts;
- metallic profile.
Embedded elements should be approximately 5 mm away from the gypsum plasterboard or foil sheet, they serve as the basis for fixing single or cross-shaped strips.
In the installed stretch ceiling, plastic rings are installed at the attachment points, in which holes are cut to fix the chandelier. Holes are drilled in the plasterboard ceiling. Then the chandelier is mounted, and the attachment points are closed with decorative nuts.
An embedded element is attached to the concrete ceiling, for example, a wooden block, to which, after installing the ceiling, a fixing strip for the chandelier is fixed
If you chose a stretch ceiling, do not buy a chandelier with upward light - the heat of the bulbs may cause circles to appear on the ceiling over time
Video: installing a chandelier on a stretch ceiling
When choosing a chandelier for your kitchen, you need to decide on the style of the room, the size of the chandelier, and do not forget about the practicality of the materials from which it is made. But most importantly, you must fall in love with your chandelier, then it will illuminate the comfort of your kitchen with warm light.
