Why white doors are back in trend and how to choose the perfect white for your apartment

Interior doors usually go through 2-3 cardinal interior changes. After all, most of them last 10-15 years, while the service life of wallpaper is limited to five years. This is probably one of the reasons why universal white doors are back in fashion. Just as our great-grandmothers dreamed of an apartment with luxurious snow-colored door panels, modern interior designers increasingly prefer this particular color.

How to choose white interior doors

White doors are an amazing piece of furniture. He is equally liked by romantic natures and cold pragmatists, it looks appropriate both in a girl's boudoir and in the office of an inveterate bachelor. Differences in materials give each white door its own character, but thanks to the snow color, the canvas of any design looks airy and light.

White doors with light walls can create a great backdrop for contrasting parquet flooring

In addition, canvases of light shades visually expand the space, and this is always a winning option for arranging a small room.

Scheme for calculating the width of an interior door
Scheme for calculating the width of an interior door

The width of the door fitting depends on the thickness of the wall, not the width of the door

Unfortunately, the choice will have to start not with the design, but with the size. If you are new to the renovation plan, you should know that:

  1. Manufacturers offer a lineup with a width of 60 cm, 80 cm, 90 cm, wider openings are closed with double doors or "accordion". Non-standard sizes are more expensive, so it is often more profitable to fix a doorway at the repair stage than to order a product for an existing one. Please note that the width of the door leaf is 10–20 cm less than the width of the opening, since the door frame must still fit in it and the mounting gap must remain.
  2. Openings in old and new houses differ significantly, so before going to the store, you should carefully measure the height and width at several points and make sure that all the angles in it are correct, that is, equal to 90 degrees. It often happens that the vertical is not observed and the rectangular doors do not fit at the top, and a gap remains at the bottom. If you do not plan to adjust the opening, it is better to choose a slightly smaller product, in which case the gap can be filled with foam and closed with a wide edging.
  3. Before changing the width of the opening, in particular, deliberately narrowing it, it is necessary to take into account the complexion and habits of all family members. It is easy to guess that an obese person will be uncomfortable squeezing through a 60-centimeter door. But do not forget that even scattered skinny and hyperactive babies are at risk, which can injure a shoulder or little toe simply due to inattention.

Thanks to the same style and shade, swing doors and sliding doors can look harmonious in the same room

After determining the dimensions, you should decide on the opening method. Doors can be the most familiar: swing, sliding (as in a wardrobe), pendulum (open in both directions), etc. But many canvases can be equally successfully hung on both hinges and guides. But the more specific the opening method, the more expensive the fittings, the more difficult it is to cope with installation and maintenance, the higher the probability of breakage during operation. For example, sliding doors of a cassette type (retractable and hidden in the wall) often cause allergies due to the fact that dust is stuffed into the parking area of the canvases, which cannot be removed from there. And they can be replaced only by dismantling part of the wall and restoring it again.

Therefore, if you want to install doors with an exotic opening method, it is better to give preference to sliding doors with an open top guide or swing doors, but with a folding leaf (compact, twice, book models). Such systems do not require a large free area near the opening and are recognized as durable, simple, and easy to use.

The guide, which is hidden behind the decorative strip, is as maintainable as the open one

Only after specifying the size and opening method, you can proceed to the most interesting thing - the choice of the door leaf design. It should not stand out from the general style of an apartment or room. Therefore, if you plan to create a mini-palace at home, then glass doors, even decorated with monograms, will not suit you, but paneled doors with beautiful glazing will be appropriate.

Despite the huge variety of products in stores, sometimes it is not possible to find an option that perfectly matches the idea. If you're leaning towards custom design doors:

  1. It is worth paying attention to furniture facades. If they have a French layout, it would be logical to repeat it in the doors, but if the surface of the cabinet is smooth and lacquered, paneled doors with a pronounced texture will be out of place.

White shade and golden edging will successfully combine the door with furniture facades

  2. It is worth increasing and decreasing the height of the canvas only if you are ready to also change all doorways in the apartment. After all, doors of different heights standing on the same wall (or simultaneously visible) look very ridiculous. By the way, the difference in width is not perceived as clearly. It is possible to change the height of the door only in exceptional cases: when the door is hidden and is usually in a closed state, if the exit from the room is located at the end of the corridor or a dead end and two different doors are not visible at the same time, if the entrance to the room is stylized as the doors of a cabinet located in the corridor.

If the doors are close together, the difference in height can be fatal

  3. It is not necessary to make the door white on both sides. If in the corridor all the doors are dark, and in the bedroom you want to create a light interior, then you can paint the canvases in different colors. At the same time, it is better to make the ends dark, since with the doors closed, the gap around the white canvas will still be dark. While a lighter gap around a dark canvas will look awkward.

Any of the woody shades can be easily combined with white

  4. You need to choose a shade of a white door so that it matches the tone of the walls. If you are more comfortable in the interior of warm colors, choose a yellowish paint, closer to ivory. Against the background of a cold blue wall, such a “warm” door will seem dirty, so it is worth choosing a bluish shade of white for it.

    Shades of white

The monitor does not always allow you to notice the nuances of shades, so when making the final choice, use the manufacturer's palette

  5. If you want to decorate the interior with a historical touch, you can allow the installation of an arched door with beveled or rounded corners. Naturally, for such a product, you will have to adjust not only the door frame, but also the opening itself. The latter, by the way, can be left rectangular, and the rounding of the upper corners can be ensured by overlays made of the same material as the platbands.

Arched doors will look especially advantageous if supported by an arch by the window.

Having chosen the doors, take a close look at the fittings. Examine the packaging, see how much the device is designed for and where it was produced, read the warranties and recommendations. Remember that a cheap door with good fittings lasts several times longer than a luxurious door leaf on bad hinges.

Varieties of white interior doors

There are various designs of white interior doors.

White doors by opening method

It is possible to purchase white interior doors:

  1. Swing. They are hung on two, less often three or four hinges, which can be visible when the canvas is closed or completely hidden (like cabinet facades). The design is cheap, easy to operate and maintain. Open hinges can be an additional decorative element. Opening swing doors requires free space, which makes them inconvenient in small rooms.

  2. Folding - accordions, books. In such models, the door leaf is able to change its size and completely hide in the doorway when open. Such doors are hung on special reinforced hinges, since ordinary doors are unable to withstand the increased weight of the canvases for a long time.

    Folding doors require careful handling

  3. Sliding doors. Sliding parallel to the wall on the bottom or top rail, closed or open. A variety are cassette doors that hide in a special case inside the wall. Sliding models can consist of one, two, three or more canvases, which, when fully opened, are collected in a pile and occupy part of the opening. Single-leaf doors allow you to place furniture on the sides of the doorway, which makes them in demand in small rooms and narrow corridors. Sliding doors are safer, as the chance of accidentally hitting the end of an open door is almost zero. Such models are much more expensive than swing ones and require special attention when choosing guides and handles.

Sliding doors can function as a partition

  4. Sliding. By design, they are similar to sliding ones, only they consist of two canvases, which, when opened, disperse in different directions. Models on the top rail are more preferable than on two (the lower one interferes with walking and cleaning), and the options with open guides are more convenient than cassette ones.

It is worth using a non-standard interior door opening system only when its functional advantages and decorative features really outweigh the similar characteristics of swing counterparts. For example, if you really like white glass sliding doors, be prepared to remove prints and stains from them 2-3 times a week. If you do not want to pay so much attention to the doors, it is better to limit yourself to a glass insert on a wooden canvas.

White door leaf design

Connoisseurs of interior design, accustomed to carefully thinking through every detail, very meticulously select the design of the door, including its shape and texture. For the perfect white room, you can choose either smooth or paneled linens, both of which can be complemented by glass inserts.

White paneled interior doors

Paneled doors appeared earlier; their manufacturing technology allows optimal use of natural wood and prevents the manifestation of most of its shortcomings. Modern composite materials based on wood chips or flour are not suitable for joinery techniques such as the usual tenon-groove and dovetail joints. Therefore, only an imitation of panels can be made from MDF, but not their full analogue.

Paneled doors can always be made in two variations - with glass and blind

Due to their long history and design features, paneled doors are subconsciously perceived as more luxurious, solid and expensive. Low-cost hollow wood imitations are usually easy to recognize by inconsistencies in the joints of parts. But if we talk about white interior doors, especially those covered with dense opaque paint, the difference between solid wood, veneer and MDF becomes less noticeable not only in appearance, but also during use. Therefore, it will not be possible to save on such models.

White doors with glass

There are several reasons to add glass to the door leaf:

  1. Visual lightness effect. The main thing here is not to overdo it, because doors made of a wooden frame and large transparent glass cease to fulfill their main function - to protect the room from prying eyes.

Entrance doors with glass inserts can only be afforded by truly open and hospitable people

  2. Non-standard design, which is achieved through artistic glass matting, UV printing, the use of film or stained glass windows and other decoration methods. Correctly chosen decor can turn the door into the main accent of the interior. But remember, if there are several such doors, the corridor will be oversaturated with decorations and will look clumsy.

  3. Access to sunlight in rooms without windows (storage room, dressing room, bathroom). In such rooms, frosted or dark glass will be most appropriate. If you prefer clear glass without frosting, it is best to add it as a thin vertical strip, a horizontal strip at the top of the door, or corrugated panels.

White sliding doors are able to flood the dressing room with light so much that the absence of a window will be invisible

It is important to remember that despite its visual lightness, glass is a heavy material, therefore transparent inserts increase the load on the door hinges. In addition, it is important that this material is resistant to impacts (tempered glass, covered with a protective film, triplex).

White doors with thin glass inserts

Even a thin glass strip can radically transform a door leaf.

Glass is most often used in paneled doors. At the same time, the thickness of the insert material is less than that of a wooden fragment, therefore, it may rattle during operation. But it is also found in smooth interior linens, for example, it is glued on top (here it is important to pay attention to the quality of the cut) or inserted into a recess (make sure that the door material does not flake off at the junction). If you need modern doors, the second option for glass fixing is the best choice - glued with a processed edge.

Smooth blades

In a modern interior, deaf door leaves without panels and clearly expressed differences in thickness look most appropriate. They are easiest to make hidden.

White doors with simple trim

White wooden canvases without panels often benefit from active texture

Even if there is a small casing around the door leaf, the same color as the wall makes the door practically invisible. The following models are made:

  1. Made of a solid sheet of painted or frosted glass. This design is completely homogeneous, safe for health and durable.
  2. Made of solid chipboard sheet with metal or plastic edging. This is an inexpensive option for installation in a hidden metal box. The term and convenience of their operation is similar to cabinet doors and depends on the frequency of operation cycles (for example, the living room and kitchen in many apartments are almost constantly open, and the door hardly moves). The safety of the structure depends on the quality of the starting material.
  3. In the form of a frame structure, where the base is sheathed with MDF sheets. Such doors are lightweight, resistant to warping, can be covered with paints and veneer.
  4. In the form of a glued wooden board - the boards are glued with their ends, leveled, polished and painted as a single structure. This option turns out to be the most natural, but heavy and unreasonably expensive.

There are similar doors made of metal and plastic, but they are practically not used in apartments. When choosing a smooth door, be prepared for it to get dirty quickly. If you don't want to spend your leisure time eliminating fingerprints, choose canvases with a matte finish.

How to choose a material for white doors

Solid wood is a natural but expensive option. Most often, such models are made in the form of paneled canvases, and the shape and size of the panels can be varied. The durability of solid wood doors depends on:

  • woody varieties (heavy oak is stronger than light pine);
  • the way of its preparation (natural drying leaves more moisture than chamber drying);
  • the quality of the assembly of the structure (whether there are any stresses in the boards or not glued grooves);
  • materials for its final finishing.

Due to such a number of factors, door prices can vary, and the service life ranges from 10 to 80 years.

Solid wood interior doors look very presentable

White veneered doors are made from several types of wood. As a rule, the base is the more common and cheaper wood, and the finishes are more expensive. The finished structure, due to the multi-layer and large number of glues, turns out to be even less prone to deformation from moisture than solid doors. But it is important to understand that veneer plays only a decorative role here. Therefore, if you do not need doors with a bright, clearly expressed texture or like doors carefully processed in one tone with opaque paint, there is no point in considering veneered models. This material will simply be invisible under a layer of paint. By the way, it is interior doors with a white enamel surface (a type of dense and durable paint) that are now at their peak of popularity.

The most accessible type of white doors is MDF models. These are lightweight frame structures that can mimic canvases of different styles. The level difference in the material was created by milling. To improve the appearance, the interior doors are covered with a white laminating layer of polymeric materials, which often faithfully repeat the pattern and texture of wood. In addition, it is MDF that is the best basis for modern doors with smooth panels and a small amount of decor.

White interior doors made of glass are the most radical option, which is difficult to beat in a home interior, because it is most often perceived as a cold material that gives a room austerity and order. Truly white (and not just matte) can be achieved by dyeing the glass throughout the mass or laminating it with colored film.

Style selection

If you want doors to remain relevant for a long time, they should not set the style, but only support it.

Paneled white door in the Empire style

The white door will perfectly support the noble discreet interior

For example, a white door with a simple rectangular panel and glass insert is a real chameleon. It will fit perfectly into a bohemian Empire style apartment. The main style-forming components are classic platbands with flutes, an intricate handle with an overlay and glass with rhombuses. It is worth replacing the platbands with simple ones, picking up a laconic handle - and it will look great in the English or Scandinavian style, neoclassicism and even a loft.

White canvas can look good in almost any modern studio

And it is worth adding to the recesses just a little patina and a few naively painted flowers on the glass, and this model will fit into a Provence style room. Conversely, a pair of carved golden linings on the canvas will make it an adornment of the palace boudoir.

That is, giving preference to such a canvas, you practically do not limit yourself when choosing the style of the room.

White doors with crosshairs - an important feature of Provence

In contrast to the chameleon station wagons, white interior doors with diagonal crosshairs always clearly indicate Provence. They can be successfully used in American classics, but preferably with simpler platbands. In other styles, this decor can cause dissonance. Therefore, when choosing a model, if possible, you should prefer the one in which the diagonals can be removed independently, then, if you wish, you can make the doors more modern.

White interior doors with arched panels

Quite simple platbands will well complement an elaborate door.

Doors with panels of complex shapes (arched, oval, pretentious) always belong to the classics, palace style, baroque, rococo, empire style. By themselves, they are very beautiful, but they require a decent frame - large rooms, enfilade transitions, furniture with ornate carvings and crystal chandeliers. In a narrow corridor, three doors of this type will look heavy, even though they are white. Of course, the effect can be smoothed out with walls of a similar color, but keep in mind that it is almost impossible to "make friends" such doors with modern styles. In addition, they are much more expensive than simpler and more straightforward counterparts.

The color of doors and walls can be in the same range or contrast with each other

Laconic doors with clear, simple lines and little decor are an indispensable candidate for installation in a modern apartment. Such canvases look great in minimalism, functionalism, modern, loft, hi-tech, scandi, some models even in futurism. With such doors, you can safely experiment with the color of walls and furniture, add non-standard decor to the room and combine all sorts of textures, but you will not be able to deviate from the modern style. Only the genius of interior design can "reconcile" such a door with a classic setting. But such doors are much cheaper than paneled doors.

White baroque door
White baroque door

If the door blends well with the wall, the furniture in the room may be dark.

The style of the door is often determined not only by the door leaf, but also by the platbands. In a modern interior, they should be as simple and smooth as possible, often without rounding the corners. The closer the style is to the classics, the more complex the profile (cross-section) of the platband becomes, often protruding details are highlighted on it, an imitation of carving is made, and patina is added.

The method of joining the platbands in the upper corner plays an equally important role. In the classic version of the two strips are cut at an angle of 45 on, so beautiful diagonal seam appears when you connect them. But Art Nouveau strips are cut at an angle of 90 on, so the shelf upper horizontal strip like based on the vertical.
