What is mulled wine

It turns out that this drink has been known since ancient times and came to us from the valleys of Central Europe, rich in vineyards. Mulled wine is based on hot wine, from which the name comes (the German "glühender Wein" literally translates as "flaming wine"). The special taste and aroma of mulled wine is achieved with the help of various natural additives.

Non-alcoholic mulled wine is not only tasty, but also incredibly healthy drink

Traditionally, red grape wine is used for mulled wine. When warmed up, it has a beneficial effect on the body, its general tone, copes well with the treatment and prevention of colds. And various additives not only make the drink even tastier, but can also enhance its beneficial properties.

But alcohol, even in small doses, is prohibited for some people (children, pregnant women). It's good that there are many recipes for non-alcoholic mulled wine. Its taste does not differ at all from the traditional one, despite the fact that it contains no red wine.

Ingredients and cooking features

To prepare non-alcoholic mulled wine instead of wine, the following juices are usually used:

  • grape;
  • apple (often mixed with currant);
  • pomegranate;
  • cherry;
  • cranberry.

Often, hibiscus is used as the basis for mulled wine - an infusion of Sudanese rose flowers.

In addition, pieces of various fruits are added to the drink, and most importantly, spicy spices. This is how the predecessor of mulled wine was prepared in the Roman Empire. In those days, seasonings and spices were rare and were very expensive, so only wealthy people could afford warm spicy wine.

Honey, cloves, vanilla, anise, cinnamon, cardamom, star anise, nutmeg - this is an incomplete list of what will help you make mulled wine even tastier and more aromatic

Spice Blend - The Soul of Non-Alcoholic Mulled Wine

In order to prepare this drink correctly and not to lose all its excellent qualities, you need to adhere to some rules. Believe me, they were not taken from the ceiling, but revealed and polished by centuries of experience, backed up by theory and approved by practice.

  1. Do not use aluminum cookware to prepare mulled wine. The drink will lose a lot from this both in taste and quality.
  2. Heat the ingredients over very low heat. The temperature should be uniform. A drink can be considered spoiled if it starts to boil and play with bubbles.
  3. The temperature of mulled wine during cooking should not exceed 70 degrees, that is, you cannot bring the drink to a boil! Watch the surface of the liquid carefully: first, a foam will appear on it from heating, and as soon as it starts to disappear, remove the dishes with mulled wine from the heat.
  4. Use only fresh fruit to add to mulled wine.
  5. It is undesirable to put finely ground spices in mulled wine. They will dissolve well, which will cause difficulties in filtering the drink; in addition, the taste can become oversaturated. Better add a whole cinnamon stick, a clove bud, an anise seed, and so on.

Mulled wine at home is recommended to be prepared in two stages. First, water is poured into the dishes, ¼ of the total amount of juice used. Then put all the spices and additives into the water, bring to a boil, cook for a couple of minutes and remove from heat. The next step is adding honey or sugar until it is completely dissolved and pouring in the juice.

This method fully reveals the aroma of spices and fruits, allows you to completely dissolve sugar and prevent overheating of the drink. The simplified method will take less time, but it will require special attention from you.

Mulled wine recipes at home

As always, there are many such recipes; and the composition, and taste, and method of preparation may depend on the country, region, time of year and even the personal preferences of the hostess. We have tried to collect for you the simplest and most detailed recipes that are easy to cope with, even if you are making mulled wine for the first time.

Classic drink made from grape juice with orange

A wonderful recipe, very interesting to prepare. Take the following foods:

  • 1 liter of fresh 100% grape juice;
  • ½ orange;
  • 1 slice of lemon;
  • 1 cinnamon stick;
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 5-6 carnation buds;
  • 1 pinch of cardamom

By the way, it is cardamom, and not cinnamon, that is considered an essential component of mulled wine. It will be just fine if you find it not ground, but whole, in the form of seeds.

  1. Stick the half of the orange with clove buds in several places. If they are sharp, use a knife to cut the skin of the fruit to avoid injury to your fingers. Put half an orange in a saucepan, add lemon and all the spices there.

  2. Fill the entire contents of the pan with juice. Do not forget that it must be 100% natural.

  3. Put the pan on a low heat and, without being distracted by extraneous matters, heat the mulled wine. As soon as the broth “makes a little noise”, immediately remove it from the stove until it boils!

Let the finished mulled wine stand for a couple of minutes, after which it can be filtered, poured into a decanter and served. Or pour it into a thermos, and go out into the street - to ski and make snowmen, because now you are not afraid of frosts!

From cranberry juice

Some people compare this mulled wine with an old Russian sbitn. I do not argue, the taste and effects on the body are a bit similar. But unlike sbitn, which will take you a whole day and many specific products, mulled wine will require about half an hour of time and seasonings that are already familiar to us.

You will need:

  • 2 cups fresh cranberries
  • ½ lemon;
  • 3 tablespoons of honey;
  • 2 cinnamon sticks;
  • 5 carnation buds;
  • 1 slice of fresh ginger root
  • juice and zest of ½ orange.
  1. Wash the cranberries, place them in a tall saucepan, and crush with any kind of press, such as a potato pusher. Pour 1 liter of hot water, but not boiling water. Place the saucepan with the contents on low heat. Add the remaining ingredients in turn.
