What determines the Internet speed of Rostelecom and how to measure it
The speed of the Internet connection determines the time it takes to open sites, download and send files, as well as the stability of audio and video broadcasts. By measuring the speed of the network, you can assess whether it meets your requirements or whether it is worth upgrading the equipment and even changing the operator.

What determines the speed of the Internet
Internet speed is the number of bits or bytes sent by or received by the user at regular intervals. Usually the unit of measurement is "kilobits per second", but if the speed is high enough, then it becomes inconvenient to count in kilobits, and "megabits" replace them. For example, if 2 megabits of information is downloaded in one second, then the speed will be equal to 2 megabits / s.
Do not confuse "megabit" and "megabyte". Internet speed is usually measured in bits with different prefixes (mega, giga, tera, etc.), and file size - in bytes, also with similar prefixes. 1 byte is equal to 8 bits, so 1 megabyte = 8 megabits. That is, a 10 megabyte file will be transmitted over the network at a speed of 1 megabit / s for approximately 80 seconds.
The speeds of receiving and transmitting information are usually very different. The receiving speed is much higher than the sending speed. Download priority is given due to the fact that users, as a rule, download much more information from the network than they send to the network.
The main factors affecting speed
There are several main factors that affect the data transfer rate:
- The quality and bandwidth of the Internet cable. These conditions are spelled out in the agreement with Rostelecom. The maximum value is indicated. For example, if a company promises a speed of 100 megabits / s, then this means an upper limit, which is almost impossible to exceed. The same is true for modems that provide wireless Internet: the declared speed corresponds to the maximum.
-
Weather conditions (relevant for wireless Internet). Thunderclouds, rain and other precipitation can degrade the quality of the satellite connection, which will significantly reduce the data transfer rate. Walls and other obstacles also affect the signal quality, so it is recommended to place the modem near windows and on hills. Cable Internet is not affected by weather conditions.
Try to put the Wi-Fi router in the central part of the room
- Bandwidth of the router or access point. For example, if you connect an Internet cable or a modem with a speed of 100 megabits / s to a router with a bandwidth of 50 megabits / s, then the Internet access speed will not exceed 50 megabits / s.
- Network congestion and problems on the operator's side. It happens that the operator's servers cannot cope with the load due to too many users simultaneously on the network. Sometimes some of the servers temporarily stop working, but such situations are usually eliminated quickly enough.
Preparing for speed analysis
Before you start checking the speed of Internet access, you need to perform several actions that will ensure the most reliable result:
- disconnect all devices from the network except the one from which you will be checking; if this is not done, then during the analysis, some of the devices may start installing updates, taking some of the speed for themselves;
- check if any large files are being downloaded, otherwise part of the bandwidth will be spent on downloading them;
- turn off all programs and close open sites so that no one can take some of the power of the Internet connection for their needs.
Close all programs actively interacting with the network before you start measuring the Internet speed
After that, you can proceed to checking the speed.
Internet connection speed analysis
There are several universal ways to determine the speed of your network connection at the moment. Any subscriber of any operator can use them. Apart from these, users " Rostelecom " has an additional method provided by the company.
Testing on the official website of Rostelecom
On the official website of Rostelecom, users can find out for free what the speed of their Internet is. It is enough to follow the link, enter your personal account, and then start the speed analysis by clicking on the "Start testing" button.
Press the button "Start testing" to start the test
At the end of the test, you will see three metrics: response time, download speed, and transfer speed. Based on them, you can decide whether the provided Internet connection speed suits you.
Analysis using the online resource Speedtest
There are many websites that provide internet speed estimation services. The most famous and reliable of them is Speedtest. To use it, just click the "Start" button on the website page and wait a little. In a few seconds, you will get the result: the response speed of the ping command, the sending speed and the data receiving speed. The site is distinguished by the presence of nice animation visualizing the speed readings.
Press the "Start" button and wait for the test result
In the site settings, you can specify the time of the experiment and select the server under test (the site itself selects the server closest to you, but you can do it manually). You can also change units of measurement and create your own user account, which will allow you to keep statistics of speed at different intervals.
In the settings, you can select the date of the planned test and the server to be checked
Testing on other sites
If for some reason Speedtest does not suit you or you want to check the speed on several sites at once, you can use the following resources:
- 2IP site;
- Myconnect website;
- Banki.ru website.
Each of these sites works the same way: you just press one button and wait for the analysis results. Having received information from several resources, you can draw an accurate conclusion about what the average speed of your Internet connection is.
Analysis of speed in the process of downloading files
This method can be called manual, but at the same time it is the most truthful, since it does not show the theoretically calculated speed, but the one with which you really have to work. Start downloading any file (preferably large so that the average speed has time to stabilize) and see how quickly it loads. Any modern browser will provide information about the speed of the download.
Download the file and note the download time
To check the upload speed, start uploading the file to any cloud storage. The main thing is to check that there is no speed limit in the free version of the storage, otherwise the result will be incorrect. You can use the most popular storage facilities DropBox or Google Drive.

Explanation of test results
When you run any of the above tests, you will get three results:
- download speed - the number of bits per second received in the process of downloading any content to your computer: the higher the speed, the faster files are downloaded and sites open;
- upload speed - the number of bits per second sent from your computer: the higher the upload speed, the faster messages are sent on social networks, files are uploaded to cloud storage and a picture from your camcorder is broadcast during a video call;
- ping - the time spent on exchanging information with the Internet server: let's say you clicked a button on the site, your computer took an action, sent a command to the site server, the server processed it, sent a response, and the computer accepted it; the time to complete this sequence of operations is measured in milliseconds and is called ping; the higher the ping, the worse, since it takes longer to wait for a response.
To get the fastest Internet connection, you need to try to increase the speed and reduce the ping.
Many factors affect connection speed. To measure it, you can use the official website of Rostelecom, third-party resources, or set up an experiment by launching a file upload or download. Be aware that internet speed may slow down due to weather or temporary problems on the operator's side.
