Brief description of Krasnodar

Krasnodar is a southern Russian city, a large economic center of the North Caucasus, the center of the Krasnodar Territory. The total area of 339.31 km 2 is home to about 1 million people. Sometimes Krasnodar is called the capital of the Kuban or the southern capital of Russia. The city is located 120 km from the Black Sea (right bank of the Kuban River) and 140 km from the Azov Sea.

Brief history of the city

The exact date of the foundation of the settlement on the site of modern Krasnodar is unknown. Signs of the oldest Meotian cemetery (IV-III centuries BC), as well as fortifications (Bosporus kingdom) were found here. The official date of foundation of Krasnodar is 1793. Empress Catherine II issued a Certificate of Merit, according to which the Kuban Cossacks were entitled to local land (between the Kuban River and the Sea of Azov). The city (a military camp, and then a fortress) was built and named Yekaterinodar (in honor of the Empress-donor).

In 1794, the land surveyor Getmanov was sent from Simforopol. It was he who made the calculations and divided the city into sections and streets. The new plan was approved by Tavricheskiy General Zhegulin. According to the plan, there was a fortress with a temple in the center of the city, and wooden houses were located to the north of them. A year after the foundation of the fortress, about 600 people lived in the city. Now Krasnodar is not only an industrial and seaside city, but also a major tourist center with a developed infrastructure.

Sights of Krasnodar

There are many museums, churches and monuments in Krasnodar, the most interesting places can be divided into several groups:

  • architectural;
  • cultural;
  • historical;
  • natural.

Monuments of architecture

The most popular architectural monuments:

  • Alexander's Triumphal Arch;
  • Shukhov Tower;
  • Cinema Aurora";
  • monument "Zaporozhye Cossacks write a letter to the Turkish Sultan";
  • a monument to a wallet.

Alexander's Triumphal Arch

The Arc de Triomphe is an architectural monument erected in 1888 in honor of the visit of Emperor Alexander III to Yekaterinodar. The first arch was built in the pseudo-Russian style by the architect Filippov, but it was destroyed in 1928 (according to one version, the Tsar's Gate interfered with tram traffic). In 2008, the local authorities decided to recreate the landmark, the architect Snisarenko developed a construction plan, and a new arch 12 m high and 3 m wide was built.

The Alexander Arch is located at the intersection of Krasnaya and Babushkina Streets (city center).

Alexander's triumphal arch
Alexander's triumphal arch

On the first arch were placed icons with lamps (the image of Prince Alexander Nevsky and Catherine the Great Martyr), and the new triumphal gate was decorated with elements in the traditions of Russian architecture

Shukhov tower

The Shukhov Tower is a metal water tower built in 1935 by V. G. Shukhov. Externally, it is a mesh structure of 50 inclined branches directed in a spiral. The diameter of the tower base is 14.2 m. Construction of the facility began in 1929, and it was put into operation simultaneously with the city water canal. At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, they wanted to demolish the tower, since the management of the Oktyabr plant believed that the tall structure would become a landmark for enemy bombers, but in the end the tower was left.

Shukhovskaya water tower is located at the crossroads (Golovaty and Rashpilevskaya streets).

There are many myths about the Shukhov Tower in Krasnodar (for example, in the early 90s, newspapers wrote the news that crocodiles were bred in the tower's tank)

Cinema Aurora"

Cinema "Aurora" is one of the favorite places of leisure for Krasnodar residents, but the four-storey building, built in 1967, is notable. Architect - E. A. Serdyukov. Immediately after the completion of the construction, a cinema hall began to work, but this object was recognized as an architectural monument only in 1981. At one time, this solution was unique, because the entire 16-meter building was visible through and through (the front and side walls of the facade were made of glass), and the visor complicated the composition and protected the large windows.

Near the cinema there are fountains and the Aurora monument (hence the name of the architectural monument). Together with the cinema, they create a single architectural complex. The Aurora building is illuminated at night, which makes it even more interesting. Now in "Aurora" all the equipment has been replaced, so there are always a lot of people in large-format modern cinemas (for 120 and 80 seats).

In May 2018, the team of the Krasnodar football club took up the development of a project for the reconstruction of the cinema (it is expected that the work will end at the end of 2019)

Monument "Zaporozhye Cossacks write a letter to the Turkish Sultan"

This bronze monument was erected in 2008. The author of the monument is Valery Pchelin. The sculptor planned to create a flat bas-relief based on Repin's painting, but it was decided to build a more voluminous composition. It took over 6 months to create the sculpture.

The monument is located at the crossroads (Krasnaya and Gorky streets).

The author conceived the bas-relief in such a way that anyone can, as it were, "enter the picture" and join the writing of the letter, sitting on a chair

Monument to the wallet

The Monument to the Purse in Krasnodar was erected in 2008. It is a giant replica of a pocket wallet (it weighs over 1000 kg), made of red marble and stainless steel. The sculptors replicated the monument that was erected in Melbourne in 1994.

The monument is located not far from house number 68 on Gogol Street. The place of installation was not chosen by chance - Gogol Street is the business center of the city (there are many banks here).

Cultural sights of Krasnodar

Krasnodar has a circus, 8 concert institutions, 30 museums and many educational institutions. Major cultural attractions:

  • Gorky Drama Theater;
  • ballet by Yuri Grigorovich;
  • F. A. Kovalenko Museum;
  • showroom;
  • fountain on the theater square.

Gorky Krasnodar Drama Theater

The Gorky Drama Theater was created in 1920, and the premises were built in 1909. In 1932, the theater was named after Maxim Gorky. Shalyapin, Sobinova and Geltser performed here. The modern repertoire of the drama theater includes 35 performances, which gather more than 100 thousand viewers every quarter.

I don't really like going to drama theaters in other cities. It's another matter if in this theater they stage a performance that I saw here in Penza. For example, my favorite productions are Romeo and Juliet, Harold and Maud, The Master and Margarita. Before the trip (if I plan on sightseeing), I monitor the poster of this city. And if I find one of these performances in the list of the nearest performances, then I will definitely book a ticket. It is very interesting to compare productions of the same work, but created by different directors.

Six months later, he presented to the public the author's version of the ballet "Swan Lake". Now more than 100 people dance in the Krasnodar Ballet Theater. On the account of the modern ballet troupe there are such well-known productions as Don Quixote, Giselle, The Nutcracker, etc. Europe, etc.).

Fountain on the theater square

The fountain in the theater square was opened in 2011. At that time, it was one of the largest light and music fountains in Russia. In addition to the sound and color accompaniment, the fountain has one more feature - water jets flow from the ground, not from the bowl. The structure responsible for the water pressure (375 nozzles), music and lighting (more than 600 lamps) is located underground, so at night it may seem to a passer-by that he is just walking across the square.

Several years ago I saw such a fountain in Essentuki. The singing colored fountain looks impressive and very beautiful, but there is one "but". If you are afraid of loud noises, you cannot turn your back on this place. The fact is that the higher the water flow should rise, the stronger the pressure. There is a hum that can scare you.

The Singing Fountain is located opposite the Drama Theater, and is turned on every day. From Monday to Thursday, it works from 10 am to 10 pm (no music), and from Friday to Sunday it is turned on at half past nine in the evening (with music), and turned off at 10 pm.

Catherine cathedral

Catherine's Cathedral was built in 1914 (the original name was the Church of St. Catherine). The initiator of the construction was Archpriest Kirill Rossinsky. This is the main temple of the Kuban diocese, which for a long time belonged to the Resurrection Cathedral.

The first major renovation took place in 1985. The interior walls of the church were painted, the dome was repaired, the facade was repaired and fenced off with a wrought-iron fence. Now anyone can come to the cathedral. Temple address: Kommunarov street, 52.

Monument to Catherine II

The monument to Catherine II was erected in 1907. The artist and sculptor M. Mikeshin became the author of the project. The architect developed the layout long before the start of the creation of the monument and managed to start work on the sculpture itself, but, unfortunately, did not live to see the grand opening. Another sculptor, B. Eduards, was finishing the work.

The monument is located on Catherine Square (next to Pushkin Street).

Troops Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was built in 1853 at the expense of soldiers. Then almost 100 thousand rubles were spent, and construction lasted for almost 20 years. The building of the temple has the shape of an equal-pointed cross. In 1932, the ataman of the Cossack army was buried here, the domes were removed, and a museum of atheism was placed in the main building of the cathedral. After that, the cathedral was blown up. The construction of a copy of the cathedral began in 2003.

At that time, the head of the city was G. S. Chistyakov (hence the name of the park). In 1923, the grove was renamed Pervomayskaya. In 1962, the facility became known as a park of culture and recreation, and attractions appeared on the alleys. The original name of the grove was returned to this park in 2008. The grove is currently being reconstructed (rides have already been installed, new plants have been planted, etc.).

In Chistyakovskaya Grove there are rare trees: Gartvis's oak, western sycamore, warty birch, etc. And there are also many birds: goldfinches, owls, woodpeckers, etc. Squirrels were brought in especially for the grove. And more recently, a rare species of bats was discovered here - a giant nocturnal. Nobody knows how she got here. It is known that this species is listed in the Red Book of Russia.
