Removing odors and urine stains from carpets
The smell and stains of human urine are easier to remove than the "tags" of animals. If your child has made a puddle on the carpet and you immediately saw it, then put a napkin or paper towel on it as soon as possible. Urine is a caustic liquid, such stains cannot be removed with plain water. Alkalis, acids, enzymes are used to remove urine stains. Therefore, any, even the safest, means first test on an inconspicuous area of the coating.
Effective means for removing urine stains (for children, adults)
To remove the stain and remove the smell, you will be helped by means that are always at hand - soda, laundry soap, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, iodine and a solution of potassium permanganate.
Soda against footprints
- Take paper towels or napkins and blot the stain. Avoid rubbing so as not to increase the area of the stain and to prevent it from eating into the fibers. Blot the liquid until the surface of the tissue is dry.
- Mix equal amounts of baking soda and water to make a gruel. Rub the mixture into the carpet and let sit for 15-20 minutes.
- Vacuum to remove any baking soda residue.
Baking soda works great on baby urine stains
Laundry soap
- Prepare the surface - blot the stain, vacuum.
- Use a soft cloth or sponge with laundry soap.
- Apply generously to the carpet. Be careful with glue-based carpets - the soap will need to be rinsed off and the water can deteriorate the carpet.
- Wash the stain with a damp cloth. If the smell persists, repeat the treatment.
The soap is also effective in removing stale urine stains.
You will need:
- 1 liter of water;
- laundry soap;
- 1 tablespoon vinegar essence;
- rag or sponge.
- Dampen the stain well with water using a rag or spray bottle.
- Rub the stain with soap and let it sit for 15-20 minutes.
- Mix water with vinegar essence and apply to stain.
- Wipe with a damp cloth and dry the cover. If it is not possible to air dry the carpet, then place a clean dry cloth on the stain and iron it with an iron.
Please note that this method requires vinegar essence, not ordinary table vinegar. The essence is more concentrated - to get table vinegar, it is diluted with water in a ratio of 1:20.
Laundry soap can help you even deal with stale urine stains on carpet
Vinegar
In the fight against urine stains on the carpet, table vinegar, the concentration of which is 9%, will help.
- Dilute vinegar with water in a 1: 5 ratio.
- Pour the solution into a spray bottle and apply liberally to the stain.
- Wipe the stain thoroughly with a damp sponge. The vinegar smell will not remain if you ventilate the apartment after processing.
Apply vinegar in the correct concentration and there will be no smell left after treatment
Lemon juice
- Squeeze 1 lemon and pour the juice into a spray bottle.
- Apply liberally to stain and leave on for 10-15 minutes.
- Reapply. After the time has passed, wipe the area well with a damp cloth soaked in cold water.
Lemon juice will treat urine stains and give your carpet a pleasant scent
Hydrogen peroxide
Did you find the stain late and it had time to dry? Use the assistant from the home first aid kit - peroxide.
- 1 cup hydrogen peroxide
- 2 tablespoons of dishwashing liquid;
- Brush;
- Sponge or rag;
- Water;
- Vinegar.
- Dissolve dishwashing gel in peroxide.
- Use a brush to gently remove the stain.
- Dilute vinegar with water in a 1: 5 ratio.
- Spray the solution onto the carpet and allow to dry.
Hydrogen peroxide is good for getting rid of urine stains, but only on light-colored carpets
Chlorine bleaches can also be used to combat urine odors and stains. For each product to be effective, its concentration is important, so carefully follow the instructions on the product packaging.
- Dilute the product with water (according to the instructions for removing stains).
- Wipe the urine stain.
- Remove residue with a damp cloth. Wipe several times to avoid streaks.
- Vacuum the carpet. This will remove some of the moisture from the carpet fibers.
- Hang the carpet out to dry completely.
The chlorine bleach method for removing urine stains is suitable for fresh stains. Bleach won't work for stubborn stains. Chlorine will not remove animal "marks" either; moreover, your carpet will smell of both urine and bleach.
The next method is useful if you have more time to remove stains.
Alcohol, vodka or ammonia
- Saturate the urine stain.
- Leave it on for 1-1.5 hours.
- Remove the residue with a damp cloth.
- Vacuum dry the carpet and iron with a clean, dry cloth.
These recipes are suitable for removing urine from light colored carpets. For carpets in dark colors, call upon the power of iodine.
Manganese solution + iodine
- 1 liter of water;
- 20 drops of iodine;
- 4–5 manganese crystals.
- Mix ingredients.
- In the resulting solution, moisten a rag and wipe the urine stain.
Potassium permanganate crystals and iodine do an excellent job of urine odor

It is easier to remove a stain from children's urine than stains from urine of an adult, especially an elderly person. For such cases, the following recipe is most effective.
- Vodka;
- Ammonia;
- Rag.
- Mix equal amounts of vodka and alcohol.
- Moisten the stain liberally and let sit for half an hour.
- Wipe the cover with a damp cloth.
Displaying "tags" of pets - cats and dogs
Urine from pets (cats and dogs) is even more corrosive than human urine. The smell from such marks stays in place for a long time. The urine of animals contains a large amount of uric acid. It crystallizes quickly and does not dissolve in water; it will not be possible to simply “wash” such a mark.
The smell and stains from urine of pets can be removed with improvised means - soda, vinegar, peroxide. However, they must be applied all together and in a certain sequence.
So, to deduce the "marks" of animals you will need:
- Vinegar;
- Water;
- Soda;
- 100 ml of hydrogen peroxide;
- 2 teaspoons dishwashing liquid
- Sponge or rag;
- Brush.
- Dissolve vinegar with water, proportion 1: 4.
- Moisten the stain liberally with the solution.
- Wait until the carpet dries - on a damp surface, further cleaning will be ineffective. For quick drying, you can use a hair dryer, but do not hold it too close to the surface - a distance of 10 cm is enough.
- Sprinkle baking soda over the stain. There should be enough soda to completely cover the surface to be treated.
- Dissolve detergent in 100 ml of peroxide. Rub it over the stain.
- Use a dry, clean cloth to wipe off any remaining foam from the carpet.
- Vacuum the carpet to remove any residue. Ideal if you have a vacuum cleaner.
Stains and odors from pet feces can be removed the same way
Such processing will require some effort and time, but the result will please you. Smell and stains will disappear and there will be no elusive trail that calls the animal to “mark” the carpet again and again. The means in this method completely break down and remove the constituent elements of urine from the fibers of the coating.
There is another popular method for getting rid of such contaminants. The composition is about the same as in the previous recipe.
You will need:
- vinegar;
- water;
- soda;
- 100 ml hydrogen peroxide;
- 0.5 teaspoon liquid soap or dishwashing detergent
- container with a spray bottle.
- Dilute vinegar with water, ratio 1: 3.
- Saturate the stain well and leave to dry completely.
- Sprinkle baking soda over the stain, covering the entire surface.
- Pour peroxide, dishwashing gel into a container with a spray bottle and add 0.5 cups of water. Shake gently to create foam.
- Spray the stain thoroughly over the baking soda. Then a reaction will occur, so you need to wait about 2 hours.
- Brush off leftover products or vacuum. There are not many dishwashing detergents in this recipe, so you don't need to wet the stain extra.

How to remove stains with household chemicals and professional products
One of the most advertised carpet cleaning and stain removal products is Vanish for carpets. The product is available in 2 types - powder and shampoo.
Vanish carpet products are time consuming and may not be worth the effort
However, against the urine of humans and animals, this remedy will be meaningless, since it contains mainly surfactants and a little bleach. In addition, shampoo foam or powder will not be completely removed.
You can remove urine stains with household chemicals at your own peril and risk. For example, oxygenated clothing bleaches are designed to quickly remove stains and rinse with plenty of water. Applying them to carpets can damage the fibers and discolor.
Professional tools may well cope with this task. Urine odor eliminators or neutralizers can be found at any pet store or veterinary pharmacy. You do not need to purchase means separately for removing stains of human urine and separately for "marks" of animals - animal urine is more stable and if the agent removes such traces, then it is quite suitable for removing "human" traces.
Pay attention to the composition - a really effective product should contain enzymes, special bacteria or patented formulas. Enzymes break down organic particles and remove odors completely. Bacteria work in the same way. Active oxygen odor removers will do the trick as well.
Look for the ECO badge or mark on the product packaging. This means that the product will cope with its task and completely split by itself, therefore, there is no risk to children and pets.
Professional products for removing "tags" pets
- Eco Life powder is absolutely safe, it can even wash clothes if there is an animal's "mark" on it
- The Urine-Off series is specifically designed to remove crystallized uric acid
- Duftapet series products are specially designed to remove specific traces
- OdorGone series pet products will remove "tags" from any pets
Foreign odors on a new carpet or carpet after washing
Do you think the carpet smells like urine even though there was no liquid on it? It can be either a new carpet or a freshly washed one.
A mild chemical smell from a carpet you just bought is normal. Manufacturers process carpets to protect them from moisture, to resist stains. The "factory" smell should disappear within 3-5 days after purchase. However, if the carpet is new and the odor persists, it is most likely of poor quality.
Also, during transportation and storage, the carpet could be in improper conditions. Excess moisture and lack of air can lead to an unpleasant odor similar to that of urine. It is easy to remove it - treat the carpet with a professional product for removing the "marks" of animals.
The easiest way to deal with a fresh stain, so do not delay removing, at least blot the liquid right away to prevent it from absorbing into the carpet. Keep in mind that the "tags" of animals are more persistent. Carefully use liquids such as chlorine, ammonia, etc. when removing urine stains. When you trust professional carpet cleaning products, choose safe and effective products.
