Shinglas roofing materials: description and characteristics

The history of soft tiles goes back over a century. Its creators are considered to be the Americans - immigrants from the Old World, who have found a replacement for their beloved and familiar, but imperfect and fragile clay tiles that have crowned castles, fortresses, residences, temples and cathedrals in Europe for centuries.

Initially, these were roll materials impregnated with bitumen, vaguely resembling modern roofing material. The transition to cutting canvases into separate fragments (shingles) began in 1903 and at first was limited to only two shapes - rectangular and hexagonal. But by the 30s of the 20th century, the cardboard base was replaced with fiberglass, new forms of cutting appeared - a rhombus, a dragon's tooth, a beaver's tail and a three-lobed model. This ensured the huge popularity of shingles among private homeowners, which continues to this day. Shinglas roofing has become an attractive and democratic coating, which has been taken care of by professionals and time, and its owners now only have to enjoy world achievements in the production of materials for comfortable living.

The definition of a soft roof "Shinglas" includes a large family of roofing materials, different in purpose, composition and method of use:

  1. Construction chemistry:

    • antiseptics based on modern biocides, which provide protection of wooden elements of the roof from rot, house fungus, mold, wood borers;
    • fire-retardant impregnations with a fire protection period of about 7 years and bioprotection for more than 20 years, which transform wood into the category of low-combustible materials;
    • mastics for gluing joints of lining material, seams of soft tiles, abutments and valley carpet.
  2. Ventilation and drainage systems - plastic penetrations, aerators, valves, seals and ventilation outlets.

    Anderep underlayment for Shinglas soft roofing can also be used on copper, natural tile and slate roofs.

  4. Roll products and sealing tapes - vapor barrier and hydro-windproof films, butyl rubber connecting tapes and diffusion membranes with a working layer of polypropylene film, which, due to its exceptional properties, ensures the diffusion of water vapor, but prevents the passage of water. It is especially worth highlighting in this group the single-layer roll tile "Shinglas", which can rightfully be considered a high-quality economy-class roofing.

Shinglas soft tile

Shinglas shingles are single-layer or multi-layer shingles with curly cutouts on the outer edge based on fiberglass, which perfectly holds its shape and, in addition, does not deform under the action of loads acting on the roof. The fiberglass core is coated on both sides with modified or oxidized bitumen, and then the top of the product is sprinkled with mineral chips, giving the roofing decking volume, color and protecting it from ultraviolet radiation. On the seamy side, self-adhesive bitumen is applied to the shingles to fix it to the continuous crate and a protective polypropylene film, which is removed before laying the tile fragments.

Flexible shingles "Shinglas" are based on a reinforcing layer (fiberglass), treated on both sides with special compounds, due to which the shingles keep their shape well and do not deform under the influence of mechanical stress

Soft tiles vary:

  • by the number of layers - one-layer, two-layer and three-layer tiles. The more layers, the greater the strength of the products, the water resistance, the warranty period and, of course, the price;

Despite the differences in characteristics, all Shinglas bituminous tiles have the following advantages:

  • strength and waterproofness;
  • resistance to corrosion, burnout and decay;
  • resistance to harmful atmospheric influences;
  • excellent warranty period - from 20 to 60 years, depending on the series of products;
  • suitability for all climatic zones.

Shinglas ready-made roofing systems

Shinglas roofing systems are a reasonable solution for roofing, thought out by specialists to the smallest detail. They conveniently combine conventional production technologies and innovative materials that meet the national quality certificate ISO 9001: 2015, which is the key to their durability. Shinglas systems have been developed for both cold (attic) and mansard roofs.

TN-Shinglas Mansard

The "Mansard" system is in great demand in private housing construction during the construction of a warm mansard roof. Its distinctive feature is the use of a superdiffusion membrane over the thermal insulation material, which helps to instantly remove wet fumes from the insulation, thus preventing heat loss. The structure of the Shinglas Mansarda system is as follows:

  1. The elements of the bearing block are rafter legs.
  2. Vapor barrier film "Technonikol".
  3. Stone-wool slab insulation "Technolight Extra".
  4. Membrane "TechnoNIKOL Optima" is super diffusion.
  5. Counter-lattice for the formation of a ventilation duct that will pass over the membrane.
  6. Step crate.
  7. Solid base for laying underlay carpet from moisture resistant plywood or oriented strand board OSB.
  8. Anderep PROF lining carpet with manual fixation.
  9. Shinglas soft two- or three-layer roof tiles to choose from.
  10. Rough thinned lathing under the heat insulator.
  11. Facing the attic room.

    The structure of the finished roofing system "TN-Shinglas Mansarda" includes a superdiffusion membrane that instantly removes water vapor from the insulation

Advantages of the ready-made system "Shinglas Mansarda":

  • ease of styling;
  • the ability to use on a variety of roofing configurations;
  • a large selection of colors and shades, as well as forms for cutting the shingles of the upper deck;
  • protection from noise and ensuring an excellent microclimate in the attic.

TN-Shinglas Mansard PIR

A feature of the finished system "Mansard PIR" is a rigid fire-resistant insulation Logicpir based on polyisocyanurate (PIR) foam, laid along the edge of the rafters. The used heat insulator makes it possible to refuse from laying the superdiffusion membrane, since the aluminum foil in the Logicpir boards creates a durable waterproof layer that reliably protects the roofing structure from moisture. The roofing cake "TN-Shinglas Mansard PIR" includes the following components:

  1. Rafter legs from a board or timber, the section of which depends on the design load.
  2. Rough lathing in the form of wood flooring.
  3. Vapor barrier "TechnoNIKOL Optima".
  4. Insulating layer - Logicpir Pitched Roof slabs.
  5. Self-adhesive LAC aluminum tape for sealing joints when connecting insulation boards to each other.
  6. Counter grill to form a ventilation gap.
  7. Sparse lathing.
  8. Solid base made of OSB-3 GOST R 56309–2014 or FSF GOST 3916.2–96 with minimum gaps of 3–5 mm for balancing thermal expansion.
  9. Anderep PROF ultra-light underlay carpet with a polyester base, which acts as an additional waterproofing.
  10. Multilayer bituminous shingles Shinglas of any model.
  11. Fasteners Termoclip WST 5.5 mechanical.

Advantages of laying the ready-made system "Shinglas Mansarda PIR":

  • the low weight of the structure does not put additional load on the load-bearing elements of the roof;
  • the heat-insulating layer forms a closed loop, not interrupted by the rafter legs;
  • there are no cold bridges during the installation of the insulation, therefore, the heat saving mode is observed;
  • no need for laying windproof and waterproofing materials.

TN-Shinglas Classic

An unheated attic is a simple and inexpensive option for arranging the roof, which is most often chosen by summer residents, as well as homeowners who do not need additional living space or who want to save money on construction. And although the purpose of a cold attic is very limited, it nevertheless serves to protect living quarters from cold and dampness. And this is already a lot.

A cold loft roofing cake looks like this:

  1. Roof rafters.
  2. The lathing is step by step.
  3. Solid flooring with minimum ventilation gaps of 3–5 mm made of OSB-3 boards or plywood.
  4. Anderep PROF lining.
  5. Shinglas roof tiles.

System advantages for an unheated attic:

  • convenience, simplicity and safety of installation;
  • the ability to use on roof structures of any shape, up to the most complex;
  • complete tightness of the roofing.

Installation of a soft roof "Shinglas"

The ready-made roofing systems described above most fully demonstrate the composition of the roofing cake under a soft tile covering. If desired, you can use other insulating and warming materials, but the order of installation should remain unchanged:

  1. Flexible shingles "Shinglas", preferably multi-layer, which itself is the main waterproofing agent.
  2. Lining carpet for additional waterproofing of the roof.
  3. Solid base for lining and shingles, most often made of OSB-3 boards.
  4. Step-by-step crate.
  5. Counter lattice fixing the waterproofing material and providing ventilation gaps for ventilation of the under-roof space.
  6. A waterproofing layer, which is recommended to be arranged from a diffusion membrane, since it prevents heat from blowing out of the heat insulator, does not allow external moisture to pass into the insulation and removes water vapor from it.
  7. The rafters that make up the frame of the roofing cake.
  8. Insulation padded between the rafter legs.
  9. A vapor barrier film that protects thermal insulation from moist air coming from the interior.
  10. Rough sparse lathing, which serves as a support for vapor barrier and insulation.
  11. Finishing material.

    The structure of the roofing cake under the Shinglas tiles
    The structure of the roofing cake under the Shinglas tiles

    The standard roofing cake for Shinglas soft tiles has three different waterproofing layers, one of which is the roofing itself

There are no restrictions on the construction of Shinglas soft roofing. However, installation work must be carried out in accordance with SP 17.13330.2011 with additions and amendments due to the emergence of new building materials on the market and SNiP 2.01.07–85 with amendments from 2008 to calculate snow and wind loads. In addition, it is advisable to listen to the recommendations of Shinglas manufacturers:

  1. To create the best thermal protection of the house and the durability of the enclosing structures, it is necessary to include a continuous vapor barrier in the soft roof, provide good ventilation and lay insulation with an optimal thickness for a particular area.
  2. It is not recommended to use products with different color codes on the same roof. To minimize color disharmony, it is advisable to mix 5-7 packs of bituminous shingles in random order before laying and mount Shinglas with diagonal stripes.
  3. If roofing works are carried out at a street temperature below +5 ºC, then Shinglas packages should be supplied from a warm storage to produce no more than 5–7 packs and the self-adhesive strip on the shingles should be warmed up with a heat dryer.
  4. In order to prevent a violation of the solidity of the soft roof, you need to cut the materials on a specially placed board.
  5. It is necessary to avoid direct contact with the scorching sun rays on Shinglas shingles to prevent untimely sintering of the adhesive with the silicone protective film.
  6. In clear hot or cold wet weather, it is recommended to use special access doors to move on the roof. This will prevent the formation of stains on the soft surface and the appearance of shoe marks.
  7. For free separation of the shingles from each other, bend and shake the package slightly before opening.

Calculation of material for a soft roof "Shinglas"

Before starting installation work and purchasing materials, you need to calculate the roof using an online calculator (often you can find it on the official website of the manufacturer of bituminous tiles) or manually through the geometric formulas of the area of a square, triangle, trapezium, etc., taking into account overlaps, waste, and marriage. If the project was originally made at home, then all the necessary initial data for the calculation are contained in the working documentation. Otherwise, after the construction of the rafter system and checking the geometry of the slopes, you will have to draw a sketch of the roof on paper and apply measurements to it.

Roof scheme
Roof scheme

In the absence of design documentation for the calculation of roofing materials, a roof sketch is required

Let's carry out calculations manually with the following initial data:

  • a house with a size of 10x20 m for all-season living;
  • a gable roof with a slope length of 6 m, together with a cornice overhang, which has a brick chimney with an area of 2 m² and a perimeter of 6 m, as well as one sewer outlet and a roof window measuring 2.2x1.5 m and an area of 3.3 m².

To determine the amount of roofing material, follow these steps:

  1. We consider the area of the entire roof. To do this, first we multiply the length of the ramp by its width and obtain the area of one ramp: S c = 20 ∙ 6 = 120 m 2. Since there are two such slopes, the total roof area S = 120 ∙ 2 = 240 m 2.

    Calculating the area of the slope
    Calculating the area of the slope

    For a simple gable roof, the formula for the area of a rectangle is used; for more complex shapes of slopes, you may need the formulas for the area of a trapezoid, a circle and other geometric shapes

  2. Subtract the area of the passage under the chimney pipe and the roof window (the hole for the ventilation outlet is cut along the finished flooring, therefore we do not take it into account): S = 240 - 2 - 3.3 = 234.7 m 2.
  3. When calculating a roof manually, you should take into account the coefficient of the level of complexity of the roof - the percentage of waste generation for different types of cuts. When using chord, dragontooth or sonata shingles, 5% waste is included with the skate and cornice tiles. For all other shapes, add 10-15% of the total amount of material for cutting. Let's say the Shinglas "Country" coating is selected, which has a "dragon tooth" shape. Then S = 234.7 ∙ 1.05 = 246.4 m 2.
  4. We determine the required number of packages. To do this, we divide the total roof area by the area of the tiles in one package. For Shinglas "Country" it is 2.6 m². We get N pack = 246.4 / 2.6 = 94.8 ≈ 95 pcs.

Thus, to cover the roof in question, you need to buy 95 packs of Shinglas Country shingles.

When calculating auxiliary materials, one must proceed from the existing standards:

  • the consumption of fasteners (nails) is 80 g / m²;
  • the need for mastic compositions: for gluing overlaps of the lining material - 100 g / running meter, valley - 400 g / running meter;
  • Consumption of mastic for filling joints - 750 g / running meter when applying a layer no more than 1 mm thick.

Similarly, the number of additional strips is calculated: N d = L ∙ (1 + K) / L s, where L is the total length of any type of additional element (ridge, cornice, etc.) in running meters, K is the percentage of rejects and material trimming, Lс - the number of running meters in one package. The K coefficient is usually taken equal to 5-10% (0.05-0.1). For example, the required number of drip planks for our roof will be 2 ∙ 10 ∙ (1 + 0.1) / 2 = 11 pcs. It is assumed here that two cornices, each 10 m long, are closed with a dropper, and the standard length of the additional strip is 2 m.

After purchasing everything you need, you can proceed to the installation of the Shinglas Country soft roof, following all the recommendations, in order to obtain an attractive, absolutely waterproof and durable roof as a result.

Installation of shinglas shingles

Arrangement of any roof, including when using Shinglas soft roofing, must be carried out in accordance with the rules and regulations, as well as installation instructions.

Work order:

  1. Shinglas soft roofing starts with padding a solid, even and secure base on top of the sheathing. It must ensure good air circulation under the roof, for which the supply openings are placed near the eaves, and the exhaust openings are placed closer to the ridge. The basis for flexible shingles is made of OSB-3 boards, moisture-resistant plywood or edged boards with a moisture content not higher than 18-20%. Base boards (or slabs) must be at least two spans between the bearing supports, docked on the supports and fixed with four nails. To avoid swelling during linear expansion of the wood, gaps of 1–3 mm are left between the solid flooring elements. When arranging a wooden base, the boards are pre-sorted by thickness, placing thicker ones at the eaves so that the base plane is as flat as possible.
  2. On the prepared solid flooring, a lining carpet is laid transversely or longitudinally as additional waterproofing. There is one nuance here - when the roof slope is less than 1: 3 (18º), the underlay carpet is laid over the entire surface. In other cases, partial laying is permissible in particularly problematic places - on roof eaves, ridge, valleys, ribs, ventilation passages, dormers and chimneys. The lining material is mounted without sagging with an overlap of 15 cm strips, gluing the seams and fixing the edges with roofing nails at intervals of 20 cm.

    Laying underlay carpet
    Laying underlay carpet

    The procedure for laying and fixing the underlay is determined by the angle of the roof.

  3. Metal cornice and end strips are installed on top of the lining carpet to strengthen and protect the roof overhangs. They are laid with an edge and fixed in a checkerboard pattern with an interval of 12-15 cm with roofing nails. The planks are mounted with an overlap of 30-50 mm and the overlaps are stitched with two nails to ensure a strong connection. In the area of the eaves overhang, brackets for gutters are fixed. The valley carpet is laid with an overlap of 30 cm, gluing it to the backing material with mastic or bitumen glue and fixing it with nails along the edge.

    Laying the valley carpet
    Laying the valley carpet

    The valley carpet is laid on top of the underlay, fixing it to bituminous mastic and roofing nails

  4. Before installing the bituminous shingles, the slopes are marked to align the Shinglas vertically and horizontally. Then a starting row of universal ridge-cornice tiles is laid, starting from the middle of the cornice overhang and moving towards the ends. Remove the protective film, glue the shingles to the underlay and fix each with four, and with a steep slope - six nails. Next, a bituminous ordinary tile is mounted with an offset in each row by half a petal. For some collections, the offset interval can vary within 15–85 cm, while the coverage pattern is abstract.

    Shinglas shingles are additionally fixed with nails so that the top row of the coating overlaps the nail heads

  5. The shingles are laid in pyramidal or diagonal stripes, depending on the type of cutting. At the ends, the fragments are cut off and glued to a width of 10 cm from the edge. They do the same in places where the valleys pass.

    Laying bitumen shingles at the edges
    Laying bitumen shingles at the edges

    At the edges of the slopes, the shingles are cut and laid on a layer of bitumen mastic 10 cm wide

  6. Equip roof penetrations. For small-sized outlet elements (aerators, antennas), rubber seals are used, and thermal insulation is laid around the chimneys. At the junction of the chimneys with the roof, a triangular rail is stuffed around the perimeter and, for complete sealing, the pipes are wrapped with self-adhesive tape at a distance of 25 cm up the pipe and 20 cm along the slope. The material of the valley carpet is laid on top, 50 cm wide, glued with mastic and covered with a metal apron.

    Arrangement of roof exits
    Arrangement of roof exits

    The exit points of small ventilation elements are sealed using rubber seals, and the passage of the chimneys is protected with a heat insulator with a valley carpet

  7. Decorate the edges of the slopes and skates. For the edges, ridge-cornice shingles are used, dividing it along the perforation line into 3 parts. Arrangement of the ridge begins from the side opposite to the dominant winds. Ordinary shingles are cut, extending to the ribs and ridge, leaving a 3–5 cm slit between the slopes to enhance ventilation. Then, with an overlap of 5 cm, the ridge tiles are laid and each fragment is fixed with four nails (2 on each side), making sure that each subsequent element overlaps the fastenings of the previous one. When working in cold weather, in order to prevent cracking of the material, it is recommended to form a fracture of each fragment before installing the ribs and ridge, using a metal pipe with a diameter of 10 cm heated to 40 ºC.

Operation and repair of soft roofs

When using Shinglas roofing, it is necessary to follow simple generally accepted rules of care:

  1. Check the condition of the soft roof twice a year - in spring and autumn.
  2. Remove small debris, leaves and branches with a soft brush, and sharp objects by hand.
  3. Clean drains periodically to ensure free flow of water.
  4. Timely remove snow from the roof with a wooden shovel, removing it in layers and leaving a protective snow cover 10 cm thick.
  5. If any defects are found during the inspection, immediately proceed with the repair of the coating.

Routine repair of the roof "Shinglas"

Shinglas soft roof is an excellent maintainable material. Therefore, in the event of damage caused by various factors, it is permissible to do local repair of the roofing yourself. For this:

  • eliminate the cause of damage formation;

    Causes of damage to the soft roof
    Causes of damage to the soft roof

    The most common reasons for the repair of Shinglas soft roofs are violation of the installation technology and the use of low-quality sealants and mastics.

  • dismantle the defective section of the roofing flooring and lay a new coating;
  • fix the new covering material, connecting it to the main roof with a thermal hair dryer.

Shinglas shingles manufacturers give a long-term guarantee for their products. However, in case of violation of laying technologies, building codes and regulations, as well as when using low-quality components, the guarantee for a soft roof does not apply.

Reviews of flexible shingles "Shinglas"

At all times, shingles were out of competition. But today's fashion dictates its own conditions for the configuration of the roofs. More and more often, complex structures with intricate and most incredible bends and turns appear, which are very problematic to cover with traditional tiles, if only because of their large weight, which requires strengthening the supporting structures of the building and, as a rule, higher costs for its construction. Another thing is the Shinglas soft roof - light, economical and safe, easy to install, durable and very beautiful, capable of giving any exterior a unique flavor.
