But what to do when the budget for building a house is limited, and the work of roofers costs almost as much as the material itself. There is only one way out - to carry out the work yourself.

Foundation preparation

1. A rafter system is being erected.

   

   The rafter system is the supporting frame of the entire roofing system, on which the roofing cake is arranged and the topcoat is attached

2. Securely fix the rafter legs to the base.

3. All wooden components are well treated with protective solutions.

Installation of roofing cake

After the construction of the roof frame and strengthening of its elements, all the necessary materials for the roofing cake are mounted, observing the recommended ventilation gaps:

1. Stuff the bar at the ends, leveling with the rafter legs.

2. A vapor barrier is placed on top without gaps and fixed with slats.

   

   A vapor barrier film protects the roof from excess moisture from the living space

3. The rows of the laid vapor barrier are fastened with a stapler to prevent sagging of the film, and at the joints they are additionally glued with tape.
4. A wooden bar is nailed around the entire perimeter between the rafters, which will hold the insulation.

5. Thermal insulation is laid, and a windproof film is laid on top and fixed with counter-rails.

6. A sparse crate is mounted, a solid flooring made of moisture-resistant plywood or OSB boards is placed on it, leaving a ventilation gap of 3-5 mm, and fastened to the rafters with self-tapping screws.

7. Parallel to the cornices, slabs (film) of the lining carpet are laid, smearing the joints of the sheets with mastic.

Laying shingles

1. For tight joining, the gable overhang bar is adjusted to the eaves overhang and to the ridge.

2. Begin laying the tiles from the middle of the slope, stepping back 2–3 cm from the edge of the cornice and first removing the adhesive tape from the shingles.

   

   Installation of soft tiles begins from the eaves, having previously removed the protective film from the bottom of the shingles

3. Shingles are fixed with special galvanized nails with a wide head.
4. Each subsequent row is shifted relative to the previous one by half a petal.

5. Along the gable edge of the roof, the shingles are additionally coated with mastic, protecting them from slanting rain.

   

   To protect the soft roofing from water inflow during slanting rain, tiled shingles are laid along the entire pediment to a width of about 10 cm on a base coated with mastic

6. After laying all the tiles, they equip the ridge, install the ridge aerator, hem the eaves and install the gutters.

This must be done constantly - one volume has been worked out, the next packs are mixed. If a part of the tile that differs in shade comes across, then mixed with the rest and distributed throughout the roof, it will add overflow and volume to the coating. Calculation of material for a soft roof

When calculating a roof, the most difficult thing is to determine the required volume of shingles. With roll or piece materials, everything is simple - they drew a sketch of the roof on a piece of paper, made a layout of profiled sheets, roll material or slate and calculated.

With soft tiles, this approach does not justify itself due to the small size of the shingles and their figured appearance. Therefore, the easiest way to calculate the required volume of shingles is using an online calculator on the manufacturer's website or third-party computer programs for calculating the roof, which give a good, most accurate result.

Manual calculation of bituminous shingles

For those who do not rely on technology, but trust only themselves, we present an algorithm for manual calculation of tiles.

1. Draw a sketch of the roof on a piece of paper.
2. We calculate its area (width x height).
3. Since the flat pattern does not reflect the true dimensions of the inclined planes, the result obtained is multiplied by a special coefficient depending on the slope of the roof. For reference - for a slope of slopes of 35 °, the coefficient is taken equal to 1.221, for 45 ° - 1.414, etc.
4. We get the total roof area and divide it by the area covered by one package of tiles (this figure is indicated by the manufacturer on the package). The result is the number of packages required.

Lining and insulating materials are calculated similarly. When calculating, take into account pruning, possible spoilage and associated replacement, valleys, ridge, overlaps. That is, take it with a margin, so that it does not appear at the end that there is not enough material, but there is no such thing on sale.

Operation of a soft roof "Technonikol"

In order for a soft roof to serve for many years, you need to adhere to the rules of operation.

1. It is forbidden to go to the roof, except for inspection, snow removal or repair.

2. To exit to the roof, you need to lay wooden panels, with the exception of the paving slabs roofing (operated roof).

   

   To move on a soft roof, you need to use wooden boards or ridge stairs

3. It is unacceptable to lay temporary pipelines on a soft roof that are not provided for by the project, store building materials, arrange additional premises, that is, place everything that can put an additional load on the roof and on the building itself.
4. Wooden stepladders used for inspection or repairs must have soft "shoes", that is, be lined with felt.
5. It is necessary to identify and eliminate defects in time, as well as keep the roof clean.
6. After repair work, it is necessary to inspect the roof for its integrity. Eliminate the identified defects immediately.
7. A preventive inspection of the roof is required twice a year - in the fall before the onset of rains and in the summer, with an inspection of drains, abutments, the state of the protective layer, assessment of blisters (if any), etc.

8. Cleaning the roof should be carried out in soft rubber or felted shoes with wooden scrapers or shovels, and when removing snow, do not shovel it to the ground - leave a layer of 5-10 cm.

   

   When cleaning the roof in winter, the snow does not need to be completely removed, so as not to spoil the roofing, it is better to leave a layer of 5-10 cm

9. Do not sweep roof debris into gutters.

The rules are usually indicated by the manufacturer of the roofing material in the operating instructions, and if you do not violate them, then there will be no problems with the soft roof.

Coating repair

During operation, it is necessary to carry out periodic inspections of the roof, and if any damage or defects are found, repair work is required to maintain the structure in good condition.

Minor damages are repaired using TechnoNIKOL No. 71 mastic reinforced with fiberglass mesh. The patch is selected in such a way that it overlaps the damage site by at least 10 cm from all sides.

1. Clean the damaged area from debris, dust and crumbling protective dressing.
2. Apply mastic with a spatula and embed the reinforcing mesh into the mastic layer.

3. Another layer of mastic is applied and a protective dressing is applied on top of it.

   

   Minor damage to the roll roof is repaired by applying a patch, which is glued to the bituminous mastic, after laying a layer of reinforcing material

Consumption of materials: mastic - 2.5 kg / m², protective dressing - 1.2 kg / m².

If the protective dressing is lost over the entire area of the roof, but provided that the roofing carpet has not cracked, an additional layer of Linokrom REM roofing carpet is made in one layer, fused onto the existing carpet. If the sprinkling is lost in some areas, the protective layer is restored with aluminum mastic "TechnoNIKOL No. 57".

The bulges of the waterproofing layer are eliminated with a cruciform incision of the damaged area, followed by the installation of a patch. The cut layers are folded to the sides to dry and, after drying, are glued to the base. A patch made of "Linocrom PEM" material is installed in place of the incision so that it overlaps the incision site by 10 cm on each side.

Loose fasteners of strips and aprons are removed and the elements are reinforced. Minor repairs of junctions to parapets, shafts, etc. are performed with the replacement of a section of an additional layer of roofing carpet. In places where the roofing carpet is mechanically fastened to vertical surfaces, instead of the damaged sealant, a new layer of TechnoNIKOL No. 71 mastic is applied, having previously cleaned the surface of the old one.

All of the above applies to ongoing repairs. Overhaul provides for the complete replacement of worn-out elements of the roof with new, more durable and economical ones that improve the performance of the building.
