The deposited film "Technonikol" - how to use it for roofing

Flat welded roofs
Flat welded roofs

The choice of a welded roof is a responsible decision, because such a device requires a special attitude to its manufacture. Even a small pebble that has fallen under the film can negate all efforts to install the overlap. The situation may be aggravated by the difficulty of locating the leak. Therefore, there should be at least one experienced roofer in the team involved in the installation of the welded roof.

Welded roofs "Technonikol" - material characteristics

The roof covering performs a protective function, preventing the building from precipitation and wind. Therefore, the main properties of the finish coat should be tightness and durability.

These requirements are fully met by the deposited roll materials "TechnoNIKOL", which are distinguished by ease of installation and reliability during operation. Modern polymer-bitumen membranes are characterized by high tightness and can be different in technical characteristics and durability, and this must be taken into account in the selection process.

The well-known roofing felt is the founder of materials of this type. It is manufactured using bitumen-impregnated cardboard. The material is not very durable, and its installation on the roof is fraught with considerable difficulties. Therefore, at present, it is extremely rarely used for roofing work. The bituminous roofing material cracks, and the cardboard backing is prone to rotting. It is usually used for waterproofing.

Cardboard and bitumen provide reliable roof waterproofing

The currently used technologies for the production of rolled waterproofing allow the use of fiberglass and synthetic materials of increased strength as a base, and the addition of modifying components to bitumen gives it additional operational properties.

How modern roll roofing material works

The classic roll-to-roll weldment consists of the following layers:

  1. Fiberglass or polyester as the backing. They have increased strength properties, are not subject to decay and are durable. Their service life reaches 15–35 years without losing their main characteristics.

    Films "Technonikol" are produced on a reliable basis - fiberglass

  2. Polymer bitumen coating. It is applied on both sides. The additives of plasticizers impart high strength and elasticity to the impregnation, as a result of which the material does not crack when heated and cooled over a wide temperature range. This allows it not to lose its performance for a long time.
  3. A protective layer of slate or granite chips. Located on the front side. It is needed in order to protect the surface from the effects of atmospheric phenomena and ultraviolet radiation.
  4. Protective film. It is glued on the back of the roll. Serves to prevent sticking during storage and transportation. The lower protective film must be removed prior to installation on the roof surface. In modern materials, melting layers are used, which do not need to be removed.

Types of deposited films "Technonikol"

Several products are produced under the Technonikol trademark, including a soft roof. The main materials to be welded are:

  1. Economy-class membranes, which are represented by bikrost film. The service life of this material is determined by the manufacturer at 10 years. Polymer-bitumen membranes of this class are intended for waterproofing floors and building structures, repairing roof surfaces, installing vapor barrier and upper layers of the roof. For the base on such films, glass cloth is used in perforated or regular form, as well as polyester fiber or frame glass cloth. The scope of application of bikrost is determined by the type of protective coating for which shale or gravel, sand or polyester film are used. Installation of the material is possible in any climatic conditions.

  2. Standard and business class products in the TechnoNIKOL product line are represented by Uniflex films. This material is produced using a bitumen composition of the SBS class with a base of fiberglass or polyester fibers. The outer coating can be made of a polymer film, as well as with a protective crumb layer. Using the high adhesion properties of SBS bitumen, uniflex is widely used for waterproofing surfaces in vertical, horizontal or inclined position. The high level of adhesion is maintained when used on any surface, including metal or concrete. SBS mastics are compatible with oxidized bitumen roofs, which allows them to be used when carrying out repair work on old roofs by fusion . Uniflex is suitable for use in all climatic zones.

  3. Isoplast film is among the most used materials produced by TechnoNIKOL. It is characterized by: absolute tightness in relation to moisture, high mechanical strength, durability (it does not deform during long-term operation), and it also has high heat resistance, withstanding temperatures up to 120 degrees. Isoplastic lining modifications are available in thickness in the range of 1.5–5.5 mm. The material for the topcoat has a thickness of 4.5–5.0 mm and is supplied with dusting of various fractions. Elastic bituminous binder can be used for 35 years if the installation requirements are met. Does not lose its properties in conditions of temperature changes. Isoplast is not susceptible to biological destruction, mosses or lichens do not grow on it, bacteria do not multiply and mold does not form. The technical and physical properties of such films allow installation work with it at temperatures up to minus 20 degrees.

TechnoNIKOL deposited roofing technology

Laying a soft roof made of materials from this manufacturer can be done mechanically or by fusing on a pre-prepared base.

The first one is used for covering pitched roofs. The finishing layer is fixed with polymer-bitumen mastics and galvanized steel nails.

The fusion method is used when installing flat roofs and consists in melting the bitumen layer with a gas burner with simultaneous rolling with rollers to the covered surface. Laying is done from the lowest point of the roof. These are usually weir zones.

Requirements for the surface for the welded roof

The base for installing such a topcoat must meet certain requirements. Low-pitched and flat roofs are most often arranged on a concrete base. The requirements for their surface are as follows:

  1. Thermal joints should be installed between the roof slabs to compensate for thermal expansion when heated during operation. The size of the gap should be at least 5 mm, the gap should be filled with a plastic waterproofing material.
  2. On the surface of the roof there should be no protrusions with a height of more than 5 mm, but only smooth ones. All raised surface elements must be cut mechanically.
  3. Cracks or gouges should be carefully repaired with cement-sand mortar after preliminary cutting and cleaning of the damage.
  4. No oil stains allowed. If found, they must be removed with a solvent.

Sheets of moisture-resistant plywood, OSB and other similar materials are often used as the base for the topcoat. Plating a hardfacing roof on such substrates is dangerous due to the high risk of fire. Therefore, before starting work, a thorough surface treatment with fire retardant compounds is required. Before carrying out the installation, it is recommended to take care of the presence of a fire extinguisher.

Before starting the fusion of the roofing material, the surface of the roof must be thoroughly cleaned of dust and debris using an industrial vacuum cleaner.

Works can be performed in dry, calm weather at temperatures from -5 to +25 degrees. The roof surface must be clean. The ideal air temperature is 6 degrees with a humidity of about 80%. If this rule is not observed during operation, it is allowed to use a construction hair dryer for additional heating of the surface of the plates.

The composition of the roofing cake includes insulation, steam and waterproof films

Formation of a roofing cake with TechnoNIKOL film

Roofing cake is a multi-layer structure designed to reliably protect the interior of the house from precipitation and wind. It is formed depending on the characteristics of the base. For a wooden roof, the pie can consist of the following elements (from top to bottom):

  1. Soft roof material "Technonikol".
  2. Lined with chipboard, plywood or OSB.
  3. Sheathing, the design of which depends on the type of the previous layer.
  4. Waterproofing membrane or polyethylene film.
  5. A layer of insulating material with a thickness that depends on the climatic conditions of the construction region.
  6. Internal lathing for thermal insulation.
  7. Vapor barrier material.

When constructing a roof on a concrete slab, the roofing pie is formed in a different way:

  1. Finishing coating from TechnoNIKOL.
  2. Slope (creation of guaranteed slopes in the right directions) using expanded clay concrete or cement-sand screed.
  3. Thermal insulation.
  4. Vapor barrier membrane.

Weldable roof mounting technology

Installation of a roll top coat is performed by melting the lower polymer-bitumen layer and rolling it to the surface. For this, special gas burners are used. As the bitumen layer softens, the roll is rolled onto the surface with an overlap of 50 mm. To control the degree of softening, a geometric pattern is applied to the lower protective layer made of polymer film. When its shape begins to distort, the bitumen of the lower layer is softened enough for fastening. Work is carried out in the following order:

  1. To accurately position the next blade at the installation site, the roll must first be rolled out. The material is then placed on the designated roof area. During installation, it is necessary to provide an overlap on vertical surfaces - the walls of the parapets, at the joints of the roof with ventilation pipes, chimneys and other elements of indoor systems.
  2. Roll up the roll and start fusing. The process consists in rolling the web "towards itself" - thus it is easier to control the degree of surface heating.

    It is convenient to melt the web when moving "towards yourself"

  3. The movement of the gas burner must be uniform and smooth; special attention must be paid to those places where the overlap has been made.
  4. The direction of the flame stream should provide heating of both the canvas and the surface of the base.
  5. If it becomes necessary to glue the sheet onto the dressing, processing only the lower bituminous layer is not enough. You must first warm up the surface, then roll it in with a roller until it is completely immersed in bitumen. After that, you can continue laying as usual.
  6. Before fusing the roof, the surface of the concrete slabs must be primed. In a construction store, you can purchase a standard mixture or prepare it yourself by mixing bitumen mastic with gasoline in a 1: 3 ratio. The treated surface exhibits much stronger adhesion to the weld material.

Such coatings can be used both for traditional roofs and for exploited ones. The life cycle of the surface varies from 10 to 35 years, depending on the materials used.

How to choose the right material for the roof

The quality of the roof depends on the choice of material. All TechnoNIKOL products are certified according to ISO 9001. This indicates the high stable quality of this material, which meets European standards.

When purchasing material, you should pay attention to its labeling, which will help you choose a film in accordance with the purpose of the roof. The letters mean the following:

  • "K" - material with coarse-grained dressing;
  • "M" - products with fine dusting;
  • "P" - indicates the presence of a protective film;
  • "B" - for products with ventilation ducts;
  • "C" is a self-adhesive film.
