Installation of soft roof "Katepal"

The bituminous tile roofing element is a multi-layer structure:

  • the reinforcing layer is made of non-woven fiberglass;
  • the second layer is made of high quality SBS modified bitumen;
  • outer top layer - of stone chips;
  • inner bottom layer - from self-adhesive SBS-modified bitumen and a protective film.

Installation of flexible tiles "Katepal"

The shingles installation process consists of several steps:

  1. Preparation of the base. Installation of a roof made of soft tiles is carried out after the completion of the arrangement of the lathing, which must be even and well fixed. Efficient ventilation should be provided in the under-roof space, while the input channels should be located at the lower end of the roof, and the output channels should be at the maximum possible height. An effective ventilation system ensures that insulation, battens and roofing material will not be exposed to condensation, which means that at low temperatures there will be no ice on their surfaces. The lathing for bituminous shingles is made solid, for which they use plywood, OSB board, or tongue-and-groove board with a moisture content of up to 20%. The length of the lathing elements is selected taking into account that they are fixed at three points. Boards must be laid with a gap of several millimeters to compensate for thermal expansion.

  2. Installation of the backing layer. A lining layer is laid on the laid base for strengthening. The use of this layer is mandatory in the following places: ridge of valleys, eaves and roof ends. When the slope of the slopes is up to 1: 3, the backing layer is laid over the entire roof plane. Installation is carried out from the bottom, with an overlap of at least 150 mm. The seam of the backing layer is glued with K-36 glue, and the edge of the layer is additionally fastened with nails with a step of 200 mm. The lining layer is laid both along and across the roof deck. When unrolling the roll, it is necessary to ensure that the layer fits snugly onto the base without wrinkles or bulges. In order to avoid the appearance of blisters, the lower edge must first be fixed, and the other side must be laid with a stretch. With a slope of more than 20 degrees, partial use of the lining is allowed. On one side of the roof, the layer is laid along the ridge, trimmed exactly along the top and fixed with nails. On the other hand, the backing layer is placed overlapping the ridge surface on the opposite slope by 150-200 mm. The seam is coated with glue.

When using a backing layer on the entire surface of the roof, the manufacturer gives a guarantee for its coating up to 30 years

  3. Installation of eaves and roof end elements. Installation of eaves planks is mandatory. They are mounted on a backing and fastened with roofing nails with a pitch of 100 mm. If the body of the nail protrudes through the flooring, which is undesirable, the plank is fastened with special roofing screws. It is recommended to seam the edges of the eaves. The overlap of the planks should be 50–60 mm. If a gutter system is available, gutter brackets must be attached to the eaves. In the same way, the end strip is mounted, which can be made not only from metal elements, but also from wooden rectangular boards or triangular battens. The Pintari valley carpet is laid on the backing layer. Its extreme parts are glued to the backing layer with K-36 glue, and the entire surface is additionally pierced with nails.

Eaves and end strips, as well as gutter brackets are installed before the roofing is laid

  4. Installation of roofing. The installation of Katepal shingles begins with the installation of a cornice strip. Before starting work, soft roof tiles from different packs are mixed so that there is no deviation in the color of the tiles along the length of the entire flooring. Bitumen shingles are laid from the middle of the eaves to the side edges of the roof. The protective film is removed from the tile and glued to the base of the roofing (after removing the protective film, in no case put one tile on top of another to avoid their sticking). The tile is then attached with four nails to the flooring on top of the groove. When the slope is 1: 1, the fastening is carried out with six nails. Further, each subsequent row is laid in such a way that the end of the tongue of the upper tile is just below the marking line of the tile of the previous row. The protruding parts of the edge elements of the row are cut flush with the side ends and then attached to the flooring using glue. The width of the adhesive layer is 100 mm. To ensure smooth edges when cutting tiles, the marking is done with chalk, and to protect the underlay layer from damage, a wooden beam must be placed under the tiles.

Laying of shingles tiles is carried out from the bottom up, from the middle of each row to the edges of the roof

  5. Installation of roof penetrations. For equipment of small-sized roof penetrations (antenna outputs, ventilation ducts, etc.), a rubber seal is used. And in the case when structural elements can have a high surface temperature (chimneys), thermal insulation is necessarily arranged. When laying tiles made of bitumen near the smoke channels, a triangular strip is nailed at the joints of the walls of the pipe with the roof. The shingles are applied to the chimney wall. The junction is processed with K-36 glue. Then a Pintari strip is glued around the chimney - the entry of the strip on the chimney should be 250 mm, and on the roof - 200 mm. Next, a metal apron is laid, and all the seams are sealed with glue. Installation of bituminous tiles near vertical surfaces is carried out in the same way.

    Roof penetrations on bituminous tiles
    Roof penetrations on bituminous tiles

The pipe exit points must be carefully sealed using special penetrations (roofs) for utilities and more complex structures with insulation for chimneys

  6. Installation of valleys. Masonry wall or chimney junction equipment is often made of Pintari tape, which is applied to the wall surface to a height of 300 mm. In order to smooth the angle of the inner joint of the slopes, a triangular rail is attached. K-36 glue is applied to all seams, and the vertical part is closed with wall cladding or a metal apron.
  7. Installation of the ridge. On the surface of the roof ridge, special elements are mounted (they are made by cutting the eaves shingles according to perforated markings into three elements and have dimensions of 250x330 mm). The protective film is removed and the tile is laid on the surface of the ridge, after which it is additionally attached to one of the sides using four nails. The next cornice tiles are laid with an overlap of 50 mm to cover the nailing point. Ridge shingles on the ribs of the hip roof with four slopes are mounted from bottom to top. At the points of convergence of the edges, the tiles are laid in such a way that moisture ingress under it is not possible. Then the elements of the ridge tiles are laid.

Calculation of material for soft roof "Katepal"

To correctly calculate the required amount of Katepal roofing material, you only need to know the size of the roof area, since each package of shingles has information about the size of the covered surface. The calculation of the number of additional elements is similar to their calculation for a roof made of metal tiles.

Below are examples of how the required amount of roofing material and additional elements produced by Katepal for roofs of various designs is determined.

Calculation of the amount of material for a gable roof

To calculate the required amount of material for a roof with two slopes, you need to know the area of each roof slope. In our case, the slopes are rectangular with side dimensions of 10x6 m.

  1. The surface area of one slope is calculated according to the formula S = a * b, In the case when the slopes have the same dimensions, the formula for calculating the total roof area is S = a * b * 2. As a result, we get S = 10 * 6 * 2 = 120 m 2.
  2. The required number of square meters of bituminous shingles for the roof is calculated based on a margin of 5% and we get a value of 126 m 2.

    Pitched roof coverage area
    Pitched roof coverage area

When calculating the coverage area, it is necessary to make a margin of at least 5% for cutting the material and possible errors during its installation

  3. The amount of material for the base (plywood or OSB sheets) is calculated in the same way.
  4. To determine the amount of the backing layer, add an additional 10 m 2 to the obtained value and get 136 m 2.
  5. The number of packs of tiles "Katepal" is calculated by dividing the value obtained in p. 2 by the area of coverage in one pack: N = 126/3 = 42. Thus, in order to cover a roof with two 10x6 m slopes, 42 packs are required.
  6. The approximate amount of adhesive composition is selected from the consumption of 5 liters of adhesive per 65 m2 of surface. In our case, about 10 liters are required.
  7. Next, we calculate the number of additional elements. The size of the ridge-cornice tiles may differ from different manufacturers, but often in one package there is material for overlapping about 12 m of the ridge and 20 m of the eaves. In our case, two packages are required, since the cornice has a size of 20 m, and the ridge is 10 m. If laminated tiles are used, then the use of cornice tiles is not required.

    Laminated roof tiles
    Laminated roof tiles

When using laminated shingles, you do not need to lay cornice tiles, so the installation of such material is faster and easier.

  8. The number of ventilated ridge is determined by the formula N = L ridge / L ventilated ridge (the length of ventilated ridge differs from manufacturer to manufacturer). In our case, 10 m of a ventilated ridge is required. In the case of a large roof area, additional ventilation ducts are required. Their number is determined based on 1 piece per 40 m 2 of the roof.
  9. To determine the required number of wind (pediment) planks, we use the formula N = L fr / L p, where N is the number of planks, L fr is the size of the gables of the slopes, L p is the useful size of the planks when they are installed with an overlap of 100 mm. As a result, we get N = 24 / 1.9 = 13 strips.
  10. The number of cornice strips is determined in the same way. In our case, 11 are required.
  11. In the roof structure, given as an example, there are no abutments, but if there are any, we use the same formula to determine the required amount of material.
  12. The amount of a mosquito net made of aluminum and a tape made of polyvinyl chloride is determined from the length of the cornice. It is equal to 20 m.
  13. The amount of fasteners is calculated from the need for 0.5 kg per 10 m 2 of area. For existing sizes, no more than 7 kg of fasteners are required.
Roof with a complex stitch shape
Roof with a complex stitch shape

If the roof has a more complex shape than the usual gable structure, it must be divided into simple figures, calculate their total area and apply the above calculation method

We will bring all the data into a single list. We will need

  1. Bituminous tiles - 126 m 2.
  2. OSB or plywood - 126 m 2.
  3. Lining layer - 136 m 2.
  4. Adhesive mortar - 10 liters.
  5. Ridge and cornice tiles - 2 packs.
  6. Ventilated ridge - 10 m.
  7. Wind bars (2 m / pc) - 13 pieces.
  8. Eaves strips (2 m / pc) - 11 pieces.
  9. Drippers (2 m / piece) - 11 pieces.
  10. Mosquito net - 20 m 2.
  11. Roofing nails - 7 kg.

Determination of the amount of material for a four-pitched roof of a hip type

The amount of material for a hip-type roof with four slopes is determined in the same way as for a gable roof.

  1. First, we calculate the surface area of the roof. After adding a margin of 7% (we take a slightly larger margin than in the previous case, because the roof is more complex), the required amount of bituminous tiles and material for the lathing is obtained. Since 2 slopes are in the shape of a trapezoid and 2 more slopes are in the shape of a triangle, we apply the following formulas:

    • S trap = (a + b) * H trap / 2, where S trap is the area of the trapezoidal slope, a and b are the size of its bases, which are 3 and 12 m, respectively, H is the height of the trapezoid, equal to 5 m. We get S trap = (3 + 12) * 5/2 = 37.5 m 2.
    • S treug = a * H treug / 2, where S treug is the area of the triangular slope, a is the length of its base, H is the height. We get S treug = 10 * 4/2 = 20 m 2.

House with a hip roof with bituminous tiles
House with a hip roof with bituminous tiles

At the hip roof, two cornice slopes are trapezoidal, and two pediment slopes are triangles.

  2. We summarize the obtained values of the areas of the slopes, we get the total area equal to 115 m 2. We add the stock, we get 123 m 2.
  3. We count the amount of the lining layer with a margin of 12 m 2, which means that 135 m 2 will be needed.
  4. The number of ridge-cornice tiles is calculated taking into account the presence of ribs in the hip roof. Based on the existing dimensions of the slopes, it turns out that 35 m is needed to equip the ridge - this corresponds to three packages. For the equipment of eaves, 44 m is required, which also corresponds to three packages.
  5. The number of the ventilation ridge is equal to the length of the ridge itself, that is, 3 m. To ensure effective ventilation of the roof, 6 aerators are required.
  6. No wind bars are required for the hip roof, but the number of cornice bars is increased. It will take 24 pieces.
  7. The amount of mosquito nets and fasteners will also be greater than for a gable roof. Material calculations are similar to those indicated in the previous section.

For the hip roof, we will also make a single list of the required amount of materials. You will need:

  1. Bituminous tiles - 123 m 2.
  2. OSB or plywood - 123 m 2.
  3. Lining layer - 135 m 2.
  4. Glue solution - 13 liters.
  5. Ridge-cornice tiles - 6 packs.
  6. Ventilated ridge - 3 m.
  7. Aerators - 6 pieces.
  8. Cornice strips (2 m / piece) - 24 pieces.
  9. Droppers (2 m / piece) - 24 pieces.
  10. Mosquito net - 20 m.
  11. Roofing nails - 10 kg.

Rules for operating the soft roof "Katepal"

All work on the maintenance and repair of bituminous shingles roofs must be performed in shoes with soft soles. You should also use safety equipment, as these are hazardous jobs.

It is strictly forbidden to work on the roof during hurricane wind, heavy rain or hail.

Inspection of bituminous tile roof
Inspection of bituminous tile roof

Inspection of the roof made of bituminous tiles should be carried out regularly, at intervals of 2 times a year - in spring and autumn

Inspection and prevention should be carried out regularly:

  1. It is recommended to carry out roof inspections at intervals of 2 times a year. The time when it is necessary to carry out inspections: spring - after the snow has melted, and late autumn - before the start of frost and snowfall.
  2. Particular attention is required to be paid to the condition of the eaves, all seams, metal elements, abutments.
  3. To provide protection against damage due to the formation of ice and icicles on the surface or in case of profuse falling branches, modern cleaning of the roof surface is required, as well as constant monitoring of nearby trees. It is highly advisable to cut off their potentially dangerous branches.
  4. It is necessary to clean up the accumulated debris, as well as remove mosses and lichens using special chemicals.
  5. periodically you need to thoroughly clean the elements of the drainage system.

Cleaning shingles in winter:

  1. With a large amount of snowfall and high humidity, inspection of soft tiles should be carried out regularly.
  2. If there is an excessive amount of accumulated snow, which can lead to the destruction of the roof, it is imperative to remove it.
  3. Snow that has accumulated on the roof must be cleaned in layers.
  4. It is advisable to leave a snow cover no more than 100 mm thick when cleaning the roof so as not to scratch the shingles.
  5. Chipping of ice is not allowed - it must be removed by melting with warm air or water.
  6. Do not use metal tools.
  7. Using heating devices, fire safety is required.

Shingle roofs should be cleaned with a plastic shovel, leaving approximately 10 cm of snow intact

Repair of soft tiles "Katepal"

Due to the flexibility of bituminous shingles, its repair is not very difficult. It is better to repair the roof at a positive temperature and low air humidity. The work does not take much time and is not particularly expensive financially.

Signs indicating the need for repair:

  1. Visually visible damage. Over time, bituminous shingles lose their properties and various defects appear on them, such as cracking and chips. The appearance of a large number of these defects indicates the need for urgent repair, otherwise the consequences in the event of a roof leak will not be long in coming. When several tiles are damaged from falling branches, only the damaged area is repaired.
  2. Damage that is not visible visually. It is not only the roofing material that wears out over time. Both the waterproofing layer and the drainage system are subject to destruction. Widespread rust on the gutters, peeling roofing material, cracks in the sealant indicate the possible need for a complete replacement of the roofing material.
  3. Dark spots. The appearance of dark spots indicates that the protective layer of stone chips has worn out, and the tiles began to collapse under the influence of solar radiation. Most likely, a complete replacement of the coating will be required.

    Dark spots on shingles
    Dark spots on shingles

If dark spots appear on the shingles, most likely they will have to be replaced.

  4. Bitumen particles on the drain. The amount of damage to the coating is difficult to determine visually, but the appearance of a large amount of bituminous granules near the drainage channels indicates the beginning of the process of stratification of the material.
  5. Tile corners bends. The last floors of houses are always most strongly exposed to heat, and in this case, the efficient operation of the ventilation system is important. The appearance of kinks and swelling of the tiles indicates that they are overheated due to poor ventilation. Such damaged tiles must be replaced, but without repairing the ventilation system, the problem will arise again.
  6. Roof leaks. In most cases, the problem is eliminated on its own, the main thing is to determine exactly where the roof is damaged.

Carefully inspect the roof at the place of the alleged damage, and if the defect is small, then it will be enough to replace the material only in this place.

Replacement of damaged tiles during the repair of bituminous coating:

  1. The place of damage is revealed with the characteristic presence of rusty nails, dark spots, cracking and punctures of the material.
  2. The sheets located above the damaged ones are carefully lifted and removed to release the latter.

    Repair of bituminous tiles
    Repair of bituminous tiles

Repair of bitumen shingles "Katepal" is carried out by replacing broken shingles

  3. Rusty fasteners are removed with a nailer, and damaged tiles are removed.
  4. The damaged inner layer is cut out, a new one is laid instead.
  5. New tiles are being laid.
  6. All seams are sealed, and metal surfaces are treated with anti-corrosion compounds.

If the damaged coating cannot be removed without damaging the entire material, it is advisable to apply a patch on top.

It is recommended to carry out work at an air temperature above 5 o C.

Elimination of leaks in connections

Repair of abutments of the roof with channels and walls is performed using a different technology. For these purposes, galvanized sheet and bitumen roll material are used. First, the damaged areas are sealed with roll material, and galvanized sheets of the desired shape are installed on top, fixed, and all gaps and seams are sealed with bitumen mastic.

To repair a leak resulting from the destruction of the ridge:

  • remove the ridge tile and shingle;
  • dismantle a ridge bar that has defects;
  • install a new beam;
  • shingle and ridge tiles are re-laid.

Replacing a damaged waterproofing layer

  1. First of all, the roofing is dismantled in places where damage to the waterproofing is detected. To do this, raise the tile slabs and set wedges under them.
  2. Then the crate is disassembled for free access to the waterproofing layer.
  3. The damaged layer is cut out and a patch is placed in an overlap of 10–15 mm from a similar material instead.
  4. The edges of the patch are coated with glue or sealant.
  5. The crate is being restored and the bituminous shingles are being laid.
  6. All seams on the roof are additionally treated with bitumen mastic.
