Apple Spas is one of the three Spas celebrated in August during the Dormition Lent. It coincides with the Orthodox holiday of the Transfiguration of the Lord.

History of the holiday Apple Spas

Apple Spas is celebrated on August 19 every year. The holiday was known even before the baptism of Rus. It got its name due to the fact that in mid-August our ancestors finished harvesting apples, and thanked the gods for the presented harvest.

After the adoption of Christianity, the celebration was associated with a church date. The Scripture says that it was at this time that the transfiguration of the Lord took place. This happened while he was praying on the mountain, in connection with which another name for the Savior appeared - Savior on the mountain.

Folk traditions

It is customary for Orthodox people to visit churches on this holiday for confession and communion, as well as bless apples and other fruits. It is believed that before the consecration of apples in the church, they should not be eaten. After returning from the temple, pies, pancakes and other dishes should be baked. A prerequisite is the presence of apples in food.

before the baptism of Russia, on this day it was customary to visit guests, bringing with them treats from apples

Our ancestors performed a special ceremony on Apple Savior: they took an apple, cut it, got rid of the core and inserted a candle into one half of the fruit. It was believed that by going around the whole house with such a candle, you can cleanse your home of negative influences, as well as bring peace and prosperity to the family. After the ceremony, it was necessary to tie the halves of the fruit with a rope and bury it far from home.

What not to do

On the day of the Savior of Apple, it is forbidden to work around the house, sew, wash, engage in construction. The only work you can afford is harvesting and preparing a festive dinner.

Signs and superstitions

Fortune-telling on apples is popular on Apple Spas. Our ancestors believed that by eating the first fruit, you can find out your fate:

  • if it turns out to be sour, you need to prepare for trouble;
  • sweet fruit promises a happy and joyful existence;
  • sweet and sour apple foreshadows strong relationships and peace in the family.

It was believed that if on the day of the Apple Savior the birds sit on the lower branches - the warm weather will last for a long time and vice versa, if the birds sit on the tops of the trees - wait for early autumn

In Russia, people adhered to such superstitions regarding the Apple Savior:

  • you can not drive flies from your hands - you will scare away your happiness;
  • you cannot sew or embroider - you will have to shed tears all your life.

There were also a number of signs associated with the weather on August 19:

  1. Rain on Yablochny Spas portends a wet and cold winter.
  2. A sunny and warm holiday promises a snowy, but not frosty winter.
  3. Light rain and a large number of swarms of bees promise a cold and rainy autumn.
  4. If yellow leaves are visible on the trees on this day, it means that a cold snap will come soon.

Apple Savior combines ancient traditions and Orthodox teachings. On this day, it is worth not only attending festive events, but also thinking about the spiritual.
