What summer residents forget about every autumn: 7 important things in the garden and vegetable garden
After harvesting, it is time to prepare the site for wintering. Autumn work pursues several goals at once: to reduce the volume of spring work, to increase the fertility of the land, to destroy as many pests and weeds as possible.
Weed the beds
Weeds do not lose their vigilance with the arrival of cold weather. The weed continues to grow, capturing the territories deserted from cultivated plants.
Regular weeding or herbicides can help get rid of weeds. Then the soil is mulched with sawdust, compost or peat.
Mulch helps to reduce the amount of weeds. It is not recommended to ignore the aisles of bushes and berries. At the same time, the last strawberry mustache is removed.
Collect Tainted Fruit
The beds are cleaned of any debris: dry tops, weeds, fallen fruits, leaves and branches. Waste spoils the appearance of the site, but most importantly, it attracts parasites.
Spores of fungi successfully winter in rotting remains, all kinds of pests take refuge from the cold.
Plant bulbous flowers
To plant less in the spring, you can sow cold-resistant annual flower seeds in the fall. Only this must be done with the onset of cold weather, otherwise they will rise and then die.
Traditionally, bulbous flowers with spring flowering are planted in autumn: crocuses, tulips, daffodils, white flowers and hyacinths, so they sprout faster. Lily bulbs are planted in late August or early October (depending on the region and variety).
Sow greens
It is good to sow greens in the winter. In the central part of Russia, seeds are planted in beds closer to the end of October, in the south - in November and December, and in Siberia - in late September or early October. The choice of sowing time directly depends on climatic characteristics and weather. If the winter does not fail, then in the spring there will be friendly shoots.
What can be sown in the fall:
- radish;
- parsnip;
- dill;
- parsley;
- catnip;
- black onion;
- caraway;
- katran;
- salad;
- dill herb;
- fennel.
Sowing is carried out deeper than in spring, so that the seeds do not freeze and survive the frosts. They choose even beds that are not washed away by melt water and rains. Landings are marked with pegs, so that later you can easily determine where the crops are and not accidentally dig them up.
Sow a garden with siderates
Experienced gardeners sow the weeded beds in the fall with green manure. Most often, rye, oats, wheat or mustard are chosen. They loosen the soil and fill the beds with useful trace elements.
When the siderates rise, they are cut off with a hoe and buried in the ground without digging. This is usually done 20-25 days after sowing. From the tops in the ground, organic fertilizer will remain, and underground beneficial insects feast on the roots, turning them into vermicompost.
Split perennials
Perennial flowers must be divided, having received material for planting instead of one depleted bush. Next year, the plants updated in this way will be rewarded with lush flowering.
Dried branches are cut and burned. Roses must be covered with sawdust or spruce branches for the winter, having previously been treated with an antiseptic.
Prune shrubs
Sanitary pruning stimulates the development of new shoots. In September, dried and diseased branches on gooseberries, raspberries and currants are removed. They are burned to obtain ash useful for fertilization.
Trees are pruned in the spring so as not to provoke frostbite on the edges. The exception is diseased and damaged branches.
Simple rules for autumn work will help you get an early and rich harvest next year, saving you energy.
