Description of the variety

Cherry variety Lyubskaya belongs to the varieties of the so-called "folk" selection, since its origin is unknown. Zoned in 1947, first described by Dr. N. I. Kuchinov, who determined that Lyubskaya had long been grown in the Kursk region.

The tree of this cherry variety is low - up to 2.5 m, the crown is sparse, broadly spreading. Cracks are clearly visible on the trunk. Leaves are dense, dark green, narrow oval, serrated along the edges.

The inflorescence consists of 3-4 flowers with a diameter of about 3 cm. Fruits in a glossy skin, round, bluntly heart-shaped. The pulp is raspberry, juicy, tender, sweet and sour. Cherry mass - on average 4 g. The stone is easily separated.

Table: advantages and disadvantages

pros Minuses
Small tree for easy maintenance and harvesting Demanding on soil and care
Cherries do not fall Late ripening
Good transportability of fruits The bark gets burned, the wood freezes
Early maturity High acidity of fruits
High yield Tendency to attack by fungal diseases
Late flowering, which protects flowers from spring frosts
High self-fertility
Suitable for industrial cultivation

Features of planting a tree

Cherry Lyubskaya is demanding on the place and composition of the soil. Fertile sandy loam or loamy soil with high moisture and air permeability is suitable for it. The area where the cherry grows should be well lit throughout the day.

Cherries are planted in the northern and central regions in April, in the southern ones - both in spring and autumn (at the beginning of October).

Landing

  1. A month before planting, prepare a hole for the cherries - 60 cm in diameter, 50 cm deep.

  2. Mix the extracted soil with fertilizers (humus - half of the mass of the earth, 30 g of superphosphate, 20 g of potassium chloride, 1 kg of ash). Lime and nitrogen fertilizers should not be applied at this stage.
  3. On the day of planting, form a mound at the bottom of the pit from the ground with fertilizers.
  4. Drive a peg into it, which will then serve as a support for the tree.
  5. Lower the seedling, spread its roots.

  6. Sprinkle with soil, ramming lightly. The root collar should remain on the ground at a height of about 3 cm.
  7. Cut off the seedling, leaving the trunk 50–70 cm tall.
  8. Pour 20-30 liters of water.

Care

Watering

In normal summer weather conditions, it is recommended to water the cherries 3 times per season. The first time - immediately after flowering at the same time as fertilizing, the second - when the berries begin to grow, the third time - in preparation for winter in early October. The first two times, you need to spend 30-60 liters per plant, water-charging irrigation (autumn) will require 60-80 liters. Of course, in dry weather or, conversely, heavy rains, the irrigation scheme is adjusted.

Top dressing

Fertilization is necessary from the 3rd year of life, since in the first 2 years the plant will have enough of those mineral and organic substances that were introduced into the ground during planting.

Table: Fertilizer and Pollinator Scheme for Cherries

Time Fertilizers and their quantity
In early spring Nitrogen fertilizers 50-70 g
When cherry blossoms, the next one is the same after 12-15 days
  • Dissolve 1 bucket of mullein in 5-6 buckets of water, add 1 kg of ash, leave for 3-6 days. Pour 0.5 buckets of infusion under the bush and immediately water with 2-3 buckets of water;
  • Dilute 15 g of urea, 15 g of potassium chloride and 25 g of superphosphate in 10 liters of water.
In autumn when digging
  • Phosphate fertilizers 150-200 g, potash fertilizers 60-80 g;
  • 1 time in 2-3 years, add organic matter - compost or humus.

Pruning

As with other fruit trees, pruning is an important part of cherry care. Despite the fact that the crown of Lyubskaya is not thickened, pruning should not be neglected, since dry, frozen branches damaged by diseases and pests must be removed. Pruning is carried out in early spring (before sap flow in the tree), removing unnecessary parts with a sharp tool. Roots must also be removed.

Shelter for the winter

One of the disadvantages of cherries of the Lyubskaya variety is the susceptibility of the bark of the trunk and branches to freezing. This factor prompts many gardeners in the northern and central parts of the country to abandon the cultivation of Lyubskaya. In order to try to avoid frost damage, it is necessary to cover the lower part of the trunk and lower branches with non-woven synthetic material, having previously tied the stem with spruce branches. It will also keep the cherries free from rodents and hares.

Table: control of diseases and pests

Pests / diseases How do they manifest Prevention Fight
Coccomycosis Red dots appear on the leaves. The affected leaves fall off, the tree weakens, it is difficult to endure the winter. This disease also affects the fruits - they are deformed and become inedible.
  1. Digging the soil under a tree in spring and autumn.
  2. Pruning.
  3. Loosening and weeding.
  4. Removing the remains of fruits and leaves from under the tree in autumn.
Treatment with Bordeaux liquid in spring during the leafing season, after the petals have fallen - with copper oxychloride (0.4%), after harvesting with Bordeaux liquid.
Moniliosis Gray growths appear on the bark and fruits. Cherries rot and fall off. Branches and leaves when affected by moniliosis look burnt.
  1. Collect and burn affected fruits and branches.
  2. Cut the growths on the branches to a healthy tissue.
  3. Before bud break and after flowering, treat with Bordeaux liquid.
Cherry aphid Aphids suck sap from plants, which leads to drying of leaves and deformation of shoots.
  1. Collection of insects by hand.
  2. Insecticide treatment Iskra, Inta-Vir (according to the instructions).
Weevil The insect affects buds, flowers, ovaries. The larvae eat the kernels near the bones.

  2. Treatment after flowering with Karbofos insecticides, Inta-Vir (according to the instructions).

Harvesting

Cherry Lyubskaya is distinguished by early fruiting - the first harvest can be harvested 2-3 years from planting. The variety is late-ripening - the fruits ripen in late July - early August.

Trees live about 15 years, under favorable conditions - 25 and more. The peak yield falls on the 8-10 year, you can collect from 12 to 25 kg of fruits from the tree.

The taste of Lyubskoy cherry is controversial; for some, it is too sour fresh. Nevertheless, the variety is suitable for processing and preparing jams and compotes, as well as freezing.

Reviews of gardeners about the variety of cherries Lyubskaya

Cherry Lyubskaya is quite demanding on the care and composition of the soil. Its taste, meanwhile, evokes different assessments - it seems to someone too sour. Also, the frost resistance of the variety is quite weak - it endures the winters of the central and northern regions only if you help her.
