In today's market, buying potatoes is not a problem. But it is rather difficult to grow this vegetable yourself in sufficient volumes: you need a significant area for planting, proper care, as well as painstaking collection and careful storage. That is why modern agronomists and summer residents give preference to those potato varieties that require a minimum investment in time and effort.

Slavyanka potatoes: variety description, photo

The Slavyanka potato variety was developed in Ukraine. In Russia, it was included in the state register relatively recently, in 2009, with zoning for the Central Black Earth Region. But in fact, potatoes are grown in a much larger area because of their excellent varietal and taste qualities.

The Slavyanka variety is widespread throughout Ukraine, as well as in many regions of Russia.

Potato bushes of this variety grow quite large, about 50 cm, and have an average spreading. Although few stems appear, they branch well and are heavily leafed. The leaves themselves are slightly wavy and slightly pubescent at the edges. They grow quite large, dissected and have a dark green color. This variety blooms profusely, but for a very short time, with purple-blue small inflorescences with characteristic white spots on the edges of the petals.

Slavyanka belongs to late-ripening potato varieties. From the moment of planting to the day of ripening, it takes from 120 to 140 days. At the same time, the harvest ripens together.

Specifications

The main advantage of this potato variety is its extremely high yield. On average, from one planted weave, you can get about 250-300 kg of harvest, and sometimes this figure reaches 400 kg. That is why Slavyanka is so loved by both ordinary summer residents and professional farmers. It is also worth saying that the yield of the variety is almost independent of weather conditions, but proper care and adherence to agronomic tricks can easily increase the average volume.

The Slavyanka variety is distinguished by its high yield.

Another important positive feature of the Slavyanka variety is the high degree of crop safety during storage. Potatoes do not lose their marketability and taste even 7 months after harvest.

Among other things, this variety is very unpretentious in regular care, as it is extremely resistant to common potato diseases. Among them:

  • blackleg;
  • curling leaves;
  • wrinkled mosaic;
  • golden cyte nematode;
  • potato cancer.

Care should be taken only to protect the plant from late blight, and both tubers and the aerial part of the plant can be susceptible to this disease.

Fruit

A pleasant feature of this potato variety is the fact that the tubers grow very large, and small fruits are almost never found. A mature potato weighs about 90-180 g and has an oval somewhat oblong shape. The skin of the fruit is smooth, rather thin, with a uniform pinkish-purple hue. The neat appearance and even shape make the potatoes of this variety extremely attractive for sale. The eyes on it are small and rare, which makes the variety extremely comfortable for cleaning and processing.

Among the fruits of Slavyanka, there are almost no small root crops

The variety is assessed as good in terms of taste. During heat treatment, the root crop retains its shape and almost does not fall apart. Inside, the potatoes are creamy, by the way, the starch content in the pulp varies from 11 to 13%. This low percentage allows Slavyanka to be an excellent base for making chips and french fries, as well as being good for stuffing and baking.

Tips and Feedback

Some disadvantage of the Slavyanka variety is its instability to mechanical damage. You need to be extremely careful when removing potatoes from the ground, as well as carefully sort the crop before storing it, as damaged fruits will quickly begin to rot and decompose.

In order not to damage the potatoes, it is better to dig out the Slavyanka crop from the ground without using mechanization

It must be said that this variety is very unpretentious to soil and weather conditions. But, since Slavyanka is an intensive type variety, in order to obtain the maximum abundant and high-quality yield, potatoes must be fed regularly and abundantly throughout the entire growth period. It is also worth mentioning that Slavyanka is resistant to short-term droughts, but still needs regular and high-quality watering, for which it is best to use the drip irrigation method.

To get a plentiful and high-quality harvest of Slavyanka, when planting these potatoes, you should adhere to some rules:

  1. Potatoes should be planted when positive night temperatures are established.
  2. Before planting, the soil must be prepared: fertilize and dig up.
  3. It is better to place the holes for planting material at a distance of at least 35 cm from each other.
  4. In the aisles, 70–75 cm should be removed.

People themselves speak of Slavyanka as follows:

Slavyanka as a seed potato

Select only healthy and whole tubers for planting material.

The Slavyanka potato variety is perfect as seed material. Sorting and selection of potatoes for planting next year is usually carried out immediately when the harvest is dug up in the fall. Potatoes for planting must be healthy and free of any signs of disease. Also, given the characteristics of the variety, potatoes with mechanical damage cannot be used for planting. And, of course, cutting Slavyanka to increase the seed is not worth it. To increase the amount of material for planting, you can germinate the potatoes in the light, and when the tubers sprout, move the roots into a mixture of sand and sawdust, watering abundantly with the addition of complex fertilizers. Emerging seedlings can be planted separately in the ground.

The main advantage of the Slavyanka potato is its high yield and excellent fruit quality. If you are faced with the task of getting an abundant amount of root crops with excellent keeping rates and storage, Slavyanka will be one of the best options.
