Processing video filmed with Apple technology is a skill that every iOS user needs. Apple developers have taken great care to make editing video content easy and convenient. And the branded online store App Store is regularly updated with new applications that speed up and simplify this process.

Overview of video processing programs

The regular video editor for the basic functionality of the iOS operating system is rather primitive. By default, it implements the imposition of subtitles and simple special effects. However, its capabilities are easy to expand with the help of various additional services.

But there are also more serious tools for working with video on Apple devices. Among them is Apple's proprietary application iMovie. IMovie has a wide range of features, from trimming a clip to applying special effects and music.

The App Store also has a serious competitor to iMovie, the Splice app. In it, the user has the ability to add an unlimited number of audio tracks to the video, and his set of special effects is richer. The Splice program is indispensable for those who like to create videos from their own photos, video materials and unprotected clips from the network. But the maximum length of a movie you can create is limited to three minutes.

Cropping video

Video resizing is possible using both standard OS tools and third-party applications. The first option is more suitable for beginners who want to experiment with the design options for their footage.

Cropping with the standard iOS tool

Any version of the iOS operating system contains a standard video processing tool in the "Camera Roll" section. It is activated by capturing the rewind arrows while watching the video. By moving them left or right, the user determines the duration of the video.

After setting the desired size, click the "Crop" button and confirm saving the change. In this case, you can either replace the original video, or create a new one in another folder.

Step by step, this process looks like this:

  1. Select a video and open it.
  2. In the upper right corner, select the "Change" function.
  3. When the storyboard opens, adjust the length of the video with the arrows. The marked area will turn yellow.
  4. To complete the procedure, select the "Save" function.

Cropping with iMovie

The iMovie app provides a rich palette of options. A convenient timeline allows you to determine which parts of the video will be cut. Fragments can be copied and can be saved and used in other projects. It is also possible to resize the clip or restore the original proportions.

The algorithm for working in iMovie is as follows:

  1. Select the clip for editing in the ribbon, then activate the trim option on the bottom panel.

Select the cropping function in the toolbar

  2. A frame will appear on the screen with the ability to adjust the frame size. The default aspect ratio is 16: 9.

    Cropping frame
    Cropping frame

Use the frame to set the desired borders of the image

  3. Move the frame around the corners to set the required display area.
  4. Confirm saving changes.

The procedure is the same for editing both personal and online videos.

Rotate video

By default, Apple Gadgets shoot videos in vertical mode. This format is inconvenient for viewing on a computer or TV, so it becomes necessary to carefully rotate the image without losing quality. This cannot be done using standard iOS tools, but there are third-party applications that successfully cope with this task.

The easiest program to rotate videos is VideoRotate and Flips. Working with it is simple and straightforward. You just need to do the following:

  1. Select a video from the list.
  2. Activate the rotation option.

    Rotate video
    Rotate video

Select the direction and angle of rotation of the image, then save the changes

  3. Save changes.

The application is distributed free of charge. Its main advantage is the preservation of the quality and all the details of the image.

In a more complex situation, when video rotation is required during the filming process or when setting up a broadcast on social networks, it is better to use another application - Horizon Camera. It will not allow the user to shoot a video with the wrong frame position and will take care of saving all the necessary parameters.

The effect is achieved thanks to the smartphone's gyroscope. This miniature part automatically detects the position of the gadget and adjusts the frame to it, so that now there is no danger of spoiling the video by an accidental or deliberate flip - the application will align it as correctly as possible. In the captured video, the movements of the device will be invisible.

Add music to video

Apple's iMovies app for adding music to videos, discussed earlier, is no good. Use third party software. The simplest of these is Video Toolbox.

Overlay a melody from the standard list

To add audio to video, you need to do the following:

  1. From the Video Toolbox start screen, select Video Editor.

    Video Toolbox main window
    Video Toolbox main window

    Tap the Video Editor icon

  2. In the video editor window, below the video playback panel, there are the Album and Camera fields. Click on the Album icon.

Select the Album option to continue

  3. A list of videos available on the Camera Roll will open. Check the boxes to open in the editor.

Check the video you are going to work with

  4. For better visibility, switch to full screen mode by double-poking your finger in the editor window. Select the desired video quality.

Double-tap the image in the editor window to go full screen

  5. Mute the video's own audio by clicking on the speaker icon.

Click on the speaker icon to turn off the video's own audio

  6. Reset the audio volume level by sliding the volume slider all the way to the left.

Set the volume to zero by sliding the slider all the way to the left

  7. Click on the notes icon at the bottom of the screen.

At the bottom of the screen, click on the note icon

  8. Select the appropriate melody from the list that opens.

Choose the music to match your video

  9. Activate the Share option. The video rendering (conversion) process starts.

  10. Wait for the rendering to finish.

Wait for the rendering process to finish

  11. After completing the process, check the result.

    Operation completion window
    Operation completion window

By clicking on the Done line, save the new file with the modified video

The disadvantage of this method is the inability to upload your own melody and the appearance of a watermark with the name of the program in the video. The maximum video resolution is limited to 640 by 480 pixels. This format is suitable for sending by e-mail or showing on the display of the unit.

Overlay a ringtone from iTunes

If the described option does not work due to the fact that you want to add not a melody from the standard list to the video, but your favorite music from iTunes or your own melody, then use another Video Toolbox option. The algorithm of actions in this case is similar to that discussed above, but there are some differences:

  1. In the step for selecting a ringtone, tap the iTunes icon.

    Downloading a ringtone from iTunes

  2. Select a suitable track, mark it with a plus and confirm the operation with a tick.

Select a melody from the playlist by clicking on the plus sign

  3. Then proceed as described in the previous version.

Adapting videos for Instagram

To upload a video to the social network Instagram, you need the Clipper application. The algorithm for working with it is as follows:

  1. Highlight the desired video in the "Camera Roll" and click on the checkmark in the upper right corner.

    Clipper application window

Select a video in Clipper and tick it

  2. Open the clip to go to edit mode, not preview, and mark the visible area and the duration of the playback.

  3. Set the length of the clip by sliding and spreading it with your fingers.

  4. Adjust the visible area of the video (note that the app will stretch it to 640 by 480 pixels, which may result in a decrease in quality).

  5. Return to the main window.
  6. Set the required style of music from the suggested ones. The application will allow you to install your composition for only 250 rubles.

  7. Save the movie to the library.

To save the result, click the "Save to Library" button

  8. Wait for the conversion to complete and find the result in the "Camera Roll".

The duration of the video is limited to 10 seconds.

Slow down or speed up video

The iMovie program is responsible for speeding up or slowing down videos on iOS. You can perform these operations using the Project inspector or the Clip menu. It is enough to select the required frame range and move the slider to the left to slow down or to the right to speed up the video.

Use the slider to adjust the video playback speed

The percentage of speed change is set using the fields in the area of the slider. Sometimes “Convert” appears instead. This happens in cases where the clip was filmed by some other Apple gadget or third-party devices. After the video is finished converting, you can speed up or slow down the video using the slider.

We've covered the most popular video processing methods on Apple devices. However, remember that the App Store is constantly expanding the selection of applications for these purposes, so experiment and create your video masterpieces.
