We change the gear motor on our own "Lada Priora"

If a car's heater fails on the road, it doesn't bode well. Neither the car nor the driver. Especially if it’s far away from home, but outside there is a thirty-degree frost. Any driver can get into such a situation, including the owner of Lada Priora. The heating system in this car is implemented quite successfully, but it has one extremely weak point: the gear motor. The reliability of this device leaves much to be desired, and it can become a source of headache for the driver. Nevertheless, a broken gearmotor can be easily replaced with your own hands. Let's figure out how this is done.

Appointment of the heating gear motor on the "Lada Priora"

A geared motor is a device consisting of several plastic gears driven by a small electric motor. The main task of the gearmotor is to open and close the heater flap, depending on the position of the regulator on the dashboard.

Gearmotors on "Prioru" are made only in plastic non-separable cases

The plastic from which the gears are made quickly deteriorates. After which the driver is forced to change the gearbox. This device cannot be repaired, because, firstly, it is not possible to find spare parts for it, and secondly, it is not so easy to open the plastic housing of the gearbox without breakage. So there is only one option: replacement.

Location of the gear motor

The geared motor on the "Lada Priora" is located near the expansion tank, under the windshield.

The gearmotor on the "Priora" is located under the windshield near the expansion tank

It is built into a niche in the engine compartment wall and is covered with a thick layer of soundproofing material. This material will have to be removed, otherwise it will not work to get to the gear motor.

Signs and causes of gear motor failure

There are two signs of a gearmotor breakdown on the Priora. Here they are:

  • when the heater is started, a loud grinding or knock is heard from under the dashboard, which becomes louder as the speed of the heating fan increases;
  • inability to adjust the temperature of the stove. The heater either blows with hot air or only cold air. The position of the temperature regulator on the dashboard does not matter.

All of the above happens for very specific reasons. Here are the most common ones:

  • one or more teeth on one of the gears of the gear motor have broken. The fragments of the tooth rotate along with the damaged gear, hitting the plastic housing of the gearbox from the inside. As a result, there is a characteristic dull grinding or knocking, which is perfectly audible in the cockpit;

    Broken gear motor reducer

    The gears in the Priora gear motor are made of very fragile plastic and break quickly

  • the gear motor burned out. This usually happens due to sudden power surges in the on-board network. For example, when the battery in the car sat down and the driver tried to “light up” from another car, but mixed up the contacts;

    A burnt out motor of the geared motor can also cause malfunctions in the Priora heater.

  • there are problems with the power supply of the motor. The gearbox itself and its motor may be in good working order, but electricity is simply not supplied to the gearmotor. This can happen due to a variety of reasons, but the most common is a blown fuse, which is responsible for powering the gearmotor.

Replacing the heating gear motor on the "Lada Priore"

First of all, it should be said that replacement of a gearmotor on a Priora with and without air conditioning is carried out in the same way, since the gearbox is located quite far from this device. It should also be noted that today there are several ways to remove the gear motor from the "Priora". One of them involves the removal of only the trapezoid along with the wipers and the expansion tank, the second allows you to get by with the removal of only one tank. But to take advantage of these methods, the driver must have extensive experience in self-repair, otherwise problems are inevitable. Therefore, the third method will be considered below, with the complete removal of all the necessary details. Yes, it will take more time from the car owner, but it is almost impossible to break something. Now it's time to decide on the tools. Here's what we need:

  • new gear motor for Priora;
  • 2 screwdrivers - flat and cross.

Work sequence

First, you need to perform a few simple preparatory steps. Disconnect the throttle assembly and move it slightly to the side.

Removing noise insulation

To get to the Priora gearbox, the noise insulation will have to be removed

Then, using a Phillips screwdriver, the screws are unscrewed that hold the soundproofing material.

  1. There is a wiring harness next to the gearmotor. It is attached to plastic holders that open manually. The tourniquet is retracted to the side.

    The wiring harness is attached to two plastic holders that can be opened manually

  2. The brake pedal bracket can now be gently folded upwards. After that, access to the self-tapping screws on which the heater is held opens. They must be unscrewed, and the heater itself must be pushed forward a little.

    The heater is supported by three self-tapping screws. It only needs to be pushed back a few centimeters.

  3. There is a position sensor for the heating flap next to the gearbox. A block with wires is connected to it. It is manually removed from the sensor.

    Very long fingers are needed to reach the block on the damper sensor

  4. The gearbox is fully accessible. Using a flat screwdriver, gently push the spring-loaded retainer so that it moves down a couple of centimeters.

    To open the spring clip, you have to move it down a couple of centimeters.

  5. The gearmotor itself is supported by three self-tapping screws, which are unscrewed with a Phillips screwdriver.

    Gearmotor fasteners

    The gearmotor is held by only three self-tapping screws, unscrewed with a Phillips screwdriver

  6. The reducer, free of fasteners, is removed from its niche, replaced with a new one, after which the Priory heating system is reassembled.

    The geared motor, freed from fasteners, is carefully removed from the niche

One familiar mechanic used a very original device to remove the gearmotor - an ordinary one and a half liter plastic bottle. This bottle was cut obliquely so that it turned out to be a kind of semicircular scoop. This thing was carefully slipped under the gear motor, and only after that the fastening screws were unscrewed. When I asked why such difficulties are needed, the answer was: so that the screws do not fall into the engine. Taking a closer look, I realized that this solution makes sense: if the self-tapping screw accidentally falls into the engine sump, it will be almost impossible to get it out of there.

Important points

There are a couple of nuances without the mention of which this article would be incomplete:

  • remove the old gearbox very carefully. A long shank sticks out of it. Pulling out the gearbox at an angle can damage the edge of the shank hole. If this happens, it will not be so easy to install a new gearbox. Therefore, advice: when removing the gearbox, it should be pulled in a plane parallel to the floor;
  • when buying a new gearbox in a car dealership, you should take only the original, VAZ one. Yes, its quality is poor. But it's still better than buying a fake geared motor, which is literally flooded with the spare parts market. You can distinguish a fake for the price. A normal gearmotor on the "Prior" costs from 700 rubles and more. A fake rarely costs more than 300 rubles.

So, replacing a heating gearmotor is not a super difficult task and even a novice driver can do it. If a person has held a screwdriver in his hands at least once, he will cope. All you need to do is follow the above recommendations exactly.
