How are wooden interior doors
Wooden doors for indoor use are available in a variety of designs. The design includes several elements that are interconnected and create a complete, durable and functional canvas. Moreover, all door components are made of natural wood, and ease of use is ensured by metal fittings.
Wooden doors organically complement the interior in any style
The main elements of the design are drawers and supporting parts. They form a frame in which panels or glass inserts are installed. There may be crossbars in the middle, allowing you to fix small panels. The connection of all wooden elements is carried out using dowels, on which high-quality wood glue is applied.
Door frame and leaf - the main elements of the system
Interior doors without panels are simple and even leaves. Therefore, many homeowners choose the paneled ones, since the inserts adorn the product and can be of any shape and location.

Wooden door options
For the manufacture of doors, wood of different species is used, but not only this distinguishes the possible options for canvases. Differences in appearance, number of doors, decor also determine the types of products. When choosing a ready-made option, you should consider such features as:
- the quality of the product, which is expressed in the absence of cracks, chips, gaps between the elements of the canvas;
- dimensions of the canvas. The door should be 3 mm less than the inner part of the box, which will ensure free movement of the sash;
- the thickness of the interior door is from 3 to 5 cm. Indicators in this range will provide good sound insulation of the room;
- type and direction of the blade. Products can be swing, sliding and folding, and their movement is possible inside or outside the room, as well as along or inside the walls;
- the color, design details, shade of the fittings must match the tone of the door, which can be painted or covered with transparent varnish.
Quality, manufacturer, cost and type of hardware - these factors are just as important when choosing wooden doors, as are the above features. Preliminary acquaintance with the offers of leading manufacturers, comparison of prices and characteristics will allow to determine the optimal model of the canvas. If the product has too low a price, then one can doubt the high quality of the design.
Solid wood doors: types of material
Natural wood is often used to create beautiful, strong and durable canvases of all shapes and styles. The material of different breeds differs in properties and appearance, which is taken into account when choosing.
Different wood species differ in pattern and structure
Wood products with good rigidity and durability are expensive. But there are also inexpensive options for doors made of pine or ash, which are practical to use and affordable.
The features of common materials are expressed in the following:
- oak systems are characterized by strength, rigidity and a service life of over 50 years. This material can be painted, artificially aged, create doors with decor of any complexity;
- pine is an affordable option. Products made from such wood are lightweight, look aesthetically pleasing, and have a service life of more than 15–20 years. Low rigidity and density of the structure lead to low resistance to impacts and scratches;
- ash is hard, withstands mechanical stress and is resistant to deformation. Elements from this wood species change over time the original color to a darker tone, but do not lose their characteristics;
- alder structures are suitable for rooms with high humidity. High rigidity, service life over 25 years, affordable price, possibility of staining make alder doors in demand;
- aspen elements do not lend themselves well to finishing due to their high rigidity. Therefore, doors made of this type of wood are resistant to scratches, impacts, but often have a simple design.
The choice of a particular type of material depends on the budget that is supposed to be spent on interior doors. Moreover, any natural wooden structures are more expensive than chipboard, MDF or other options. It should be noted that the box for the canvas must be made of the same structure as the door.
Unpainted natural wood doors
Any wood products have a pattern in the form of rings, lines of wood structure. This natural pattern cannot be imitated with artificial materials and therefore many people choose unpainted doors to an apartment or private house. They are not coated with any paints and varnishes, but can be treated with clear varnish or impregnation. This is due to the fact that wood of any type needs protection from moisture and dirt.
Unpainted pine doors have a light shade
The main positive feature of unpainted models is the natural shade of natural wood. The advantage is the absence of unnecessary chemical coatings that can emit harmful substances, which is not recommended for residential premises.
The disadvantages are expressed in the fact that canvases without a paint-and-varnish layer are easily contaminated, because dust and dirt eats into wood, even with the highest density. As a result, the surface quickly loses its original appearance, cracks and door swelling are possible. Therefore, unpainted products should be treated at least minimally, that is, with a transparent protective impregnation or varnish.
Interior double doors
For openings that are more than 1 m wide, double-leaf door systems are often used. The two canvases can be the same or different sizes. And options are also common where one sash is functional, and the other is fixed and opens only when necessary. The box is part of this system, but if the doors are sliding, then guides are installed.
Solid wood double-leaf doors look solid and are suitable for large spaces
The advantages of double-leaf designs are as follows:
- the ability to adjust the width of the opening by fixing or opening one of the leaves;
- spectacular appearance and functionality;
- demand for residential or office space;
- variety of options from different woods of any color and design.
Systems with two doors are not suitable for small apartments and rooms, as they require a large opening and enough space to open. The production of double-leaf doors is made to order, because large openings can have different widths.
Interior doors with carving
There are many options for decorating wooden doors and one of them is carving. This design involves the creation of patterns on the canvas, compositions that decorate the product. Such models are created by hand and made to order.
Threaded doors are beautiful but custom made
The advantages of doors decorated with carvings are expressed in such qualities as:
- unique design and beautiful design;
- quality wood;
- production according to an individual project;
- compliance with interior design;
- long service life.
Carved canvases are beautiful, but have a very high cost, as they are made of valuable wood species and decorated by hand. If such a product is damaged, restoration is possible, but this procedure is carried out only by professional craftsmen, and their work is highly valued.
Wooden doors with glass
Glass doors are widespread and beautiful. Such models are convenient for the living room, kitchen, and blind canvases are used for living rooms and a bathroom, since glass is not always appropriate in these rooms.
Doors with glass are varied and suitable for a classic interior style
The design of glass canvases includes a frame, crossbars and inserts. Glass elements are translucent, patterned or stained-glass. Such products are beautiful, can be customized and have the following positive features:
- have an unusual appearance;
- optimal for many interior styles;
- practical to use and easy to clean;
- have an affordable cost;
- different arrangement of glasses is possible.
In a house with small children, glass structures are not always convenient. If they are installed, then it is important to use hardened material or triplex, which are safe.

How to make wooden doors with your own hands
Making an interior door with your own hands is a complex and costly process that requires not only skills in carpentry, but also some professional tools. It is also necessary to prepare high-quality material, namely wood that does not have traces of decay, with a moisture content of no more than 12%. It is worth considering that the work is long and requires care, because wood is a capricious material, but the doors should turn out with a smooth surface.
With your own hands, you can make a door of a simple design with panels
The production of a wooden canvas is carried out in a spacious room with good lighting and prepared tools. To work, you will need the following tools and materials:
- planed boards, the length of which is slightly more than the height of the future door and box racks;
- planer, grinder, screwdriver, manual milling cutter;
- square, tape measure, pencil;
- sandpaper of different grain sizes;
- wood glue, mallet and hammer, dowels;
- chisel, brush or spray gun and paint composition;
- acrylic putty, rags to remove excess funds;
- accessories - handles, lock, hinges;
- timber with a section of 5x10 cm for the box.
Before work, be sure to measure the opening to determine the dimensions of the door. The canvas should be approximately 2-3 mm less than the box, and the frame itself should have parameters corresponding to the height and width of the opening. It is important to align the walls and all corners, because the correctness of measurements and ease of installation depend on this.
Boards must be smooth and free from rot
The interior door manufacturing technology was carried out by the author of these lines, who is a professional carpenter. The stages of work are expressed as follows:
-
The box requires two vertical posts and a pair of horizontal crossbars. To create them, smooth boards are sawn (they can be pre-sanded a little) according to the width and height of the opening, at the ends of short and long elements, recesses are made to connect the structure. These places should be treated with wood glue and assemble the box, pressing firmly and fixing the parts. The evenness of all corners is checked with a square.
The box is the basis for the canvas
-
The frame of the canvas is made of boards about 10 cm wide, and glued panels are needed for the panels. You can make them yourself by cutting the boards of the required length, smearing the edges with carpentry glue, connecting and clamping the elements with clamps. The purchase of ready-made glued panels, the thickness of which is equal to the thickness of the frame, is an easier option than self-gluing. For the frame and cross-beams, boards are sawn according to the height and length of the future canvas: 2 vertical upright and 4 tsars. Two short and two long parts are used for the frame, creating 2 grooves each for installing dowels at the ends of the boards.
Dowel holes are made with a drill
-
A groove is made along the edges of the inner crossbars and on one side of the vertical posts before assembly, which will serve for installing the panels. A groove is also created in them, which allows you to connect the inserts with other elements of the door, assembling it as a constructor.
Floating panels are the easiest to make yourself.
-
Panel boards are cut 0.5 cm more on each side to fit into the groove. They are mounted after processing the grooves with wood glue, which ensures reliable fixation. The assembly is carried out from the bottom up, while you should always check the evenness of the corners, and if necessary, correct defects.
Panels can be of different types and shapes
-
After the glue dries, you need to make a hole for the lock, handle with a drill and a round crown on wood. The diameter is set based on the size of the hardware. If the door is painted, then the canvas is carefully sanded. First, use medium-grained sandpaper for a sander, then blow off the dust and process the surface with fine sandpaper. Only after that the wood is painted with a spray gun. You need to do this two times. After the first layer has dried, the doors are sanded with fine-grained sandpaper, dust is removed, and then one or two final layers are applied.
Painting is carried out on a horizontal surface and in a dust-free room
After the layer of varnish or paint has dried, you can start installing the door. During the coating of the canvas, the box must also be painted. In the absence of a spray gun, you can use a brush.

Stages of installing a door in the opening
To install the structure, you will need a construction hydraulic level, as well as a tape measure, wedges and a pencil, a gun with high-quality polyurethane foam. Platbands and extensions are necessary to give a complete look to the door system.
Installation of interior doors involves the following basic steps:
-
Installation of the assembled box in the opening and fixing the frame with wedges.
The door frame is fixed with wedges
- Setting and adjusting the flatness of the frame.
- Fastening the hinges to the vertical post box and the frame of the canvas.
- Installing the lock and handle on the door.
- Hanging the canvas on the hinges.
-
Checking the evenness and adjusting the hinges by twisting the screws.
Following the sequence of work will help to install the door correctly

Features of restoration and repair of solid wood doors
Wood does not tolerate shock, humidity, temperature extremes, and exposure to chemicals. Therefore, various breakdowns and defects may occur, which spoil the appearance of a wooden door. In such situations, you can independently carry out a simple repair and restoration of the canvas.
Such work options are widespread as:
-
The door touches the box when driving. To eliminate such a problem, the hinges are adjusted by unscrewing or twisting the screws with a screwdriver or screwdriver, achieving the desired result.
The fastening points of the screws must be deepened
- Broken lock or handle. In such situations, it is necessary to unscrew the broken part and install a new one in its place, having the same dimensions as the old one.
- Surface scratches and small cracks. Such defects are eliminated with a furniture marker, color corrector or furniture wax, matched to the color of the door. The funds are applied pointwise, and the excess is removed with a napkin.
-
Abrasions and extensive paint chips. In this case, complete painting of the canvas is necessary. To do this, remove varnish or paint with sandpaper or a special wash, polish the surface and apply new layers.
If the damage is extensive, the canvas will have to be removed from the hinges.
- Cracks and gaps between the elements of the canvas. Small cracks are eliminated with acrylic putty, matched to the color of the wood, and for large gaps, you need to remove the door from the hinges, treat the damage with glue and tighten the structure with clamps.
