Patina: what is, types
In the traditional sense, patina is a greenish oxide-carbonate coating on copper, formed after a long time under the influence of oxygen and dampness. But, in addition to the natural patina, there is also an artificial one, through which objects can be specially given the effect of antiquity. Using special paints containing acids and oxidants, designers manage to make antique not only metal, but also wooden products, including a kitchen set.
The patinating agent contains special oxidants that allow the wood to take on a shabby look.
For artificial aging of wood objects, the following is used:
- thick (pasty) patina. The composition allows you to get light brown, gold and red shades inherent in oak wood;
- liquid patina. The product is a varnish that colors the wood in a light yellow or golden tone, typical of old ash or oak;
- craquelure varnish with contrasting patina and varnish. The first formulation gives the objects an antique look thanks to the appearance of a network of cracks that can be seen on the age-old wood. The second tool is rubbed into the resulting craquelure, and the third is responsible for creating and maintaining the finished image.
Advantages and disadvantages of a patina kitchen
The advantages of an artificially aged kitchen are:
- resistance to abrasion as a result of additional painting of facades;
- reduced susceptibility to moisture and steam;
- undemanding care (without treatment with special products);
- masking small defects, spots and irregularities on the headset;
- the acquisition of an unusual look by the kitchen;
- reasonable price (compared to real antique furniture).
The disadvantages of a kitchen with a patina include only one thing - the ability to easily ignite. Therefore, an artificially aged headset should not be installed near heat sources. Even electrical wires in a kitchen with patinated furniture should be thoroughly insulated.
Choice of plaque color
The most common patina colors are silver and gold. They are suitable for a kitchen with a basic white or black tone and a headset made of light wood. By the way, it is customary to apply matte, not glossy varnish over the patina of gold or silver color.
Patination is often carried out with a golden color, giving the room a regal look.
If you want to make the carved patterns on the facades of the headset more noticeable, you should resort to contrasting patina. Suitable combinations are gold plus silver, bronze plus gold, and bronze plus silver.
If the facades of the kitchen set are white, then it is better to opt for a light patina color. And it is more logical to decorate dark cabinets and drawers with black, brown, gray or yellow compounds for aging wood. To make the right decision in this matter will help the table of the ratio of the color of patina and the color of the facades of the kitchen set (see below).

Stylish solutions for kitchens with patina
Patinating a kitchen unit is acceptable in the following interior styles:
- country. Its basic principles are naturalness of materials, naturalness of colors, abundance of textiles with ruffles and folds, massiveness of wooden furniture and originality. Green, brown and red kitchens with patina fit perfectly into this style;
- provence. It is characterized by muted colors, floral patterns of textiles, large windows, wrought iron elements and the use of tiles or planks for flooring. This style suits beige, gray and brown kitchens with patina;
- shabby chic. It is created with luxurious but shabby furniture, large headset, abundance of textiles, pink pattern and mint color. Green, white and beige kitchens with patina are often made in this style;
- classic. Its features are considered to be the absence of unnecessary things in the interior, the clarity of volumetric figures, laconicism and large furniture made of natural wood with upholstery made of natural silk or velvet. In the classic style, the kitchen should be brown, white or black with the inclusion of a patina of noble tones, that is, gold or brown.

- To create a special comfort in the kitchen in a classic style, not only the upholstery of the furniture, but also the golden patina on the headset helps
- When using patina in a Provence style room, where an emphasis is placed on forged elements, it would turn out to make the set more noticeable and interesting
- Since glossy surfaces in a country-style kitchen are inappropriate, you can make the room sparkle with a golden patina.
- In a kitchen with natural materials and an abundance of textiles, the golden patina will not look superfluous.
- In a room where luxury meets simplicity, patina is indispensable
Features of interior decoration with patina: surface finishing
The kitchen, the set of which is specially worn, is designed according to special rules.
Kitchen set
In the kitchen, stylized "antique" with patina, it is recommended to install a set of MDF or chipboard. It is desirable that the material of the cabinets has a slightly embossed texture that mimics the surface of natural wood. Glass inserts, radius doors and grilles will help to give a simple direct and deaf headset made of inexpensive panels a more presentable look.
Patina can be used to decorate a headset made of any material, not excluding MDF
The facades of the kitchen set with patina are often tinted with non-shiny enamel of calm shades. To give the leaves with a patina a more interesting look, they resort to brushing, based on removing the top layer from the coating with a stiff brush. After such treatment, small cracks appear on the surface of the doors, which are well filled with a compound for artificial aging of wood.
If both brushing and patination were used for aging, then the headset will take on the appearance of cracked furniture
Textile
The color of the curtains in the kitchen with patina depends on the color scheme of the furniture. Chairs and tables in discreet colors are combined with textiles of any color. And kitchen windows dominated by red or green, as a rule, are covered with fabrics of the same shade or light curtains. By the way, the last version of textiles is in good harmony with different headsets, regardless of color.
Curtains with gold patterns can be weighed on the curtain of the kitchen, the headset of which is decorated with a golden patina
Curtains can be devoid of a pattern or abound with fancy patterns, if the room is equipped according to the laws of the classics. The main thing is that the textiles completely cover the window opening.
And in the Provence style kitchen, it is advisable to hang pastel-colored fabrics with a simple pattern. A win-win solution in window decoration is to use curtains in the same shade as the patina.
Walls, ceiling and floor
To make the patinated set stand out against the background of the walls, discreet colors or materials with a fancy pattern are used for their design.
The walls of a patinated kitchen are often painted with light paint so that they do not look brighter than the headset.
In most cases, the ceiling of a patinated kitchen is made white and, as a result, a visual expansion of the space is achieved. The main thing is that the color of the ceiling is at least 2-3 tones lighter than the walls and floor.
The ceiling in the kitchen with patina, in contrast to the floor, should be sufficiently light
There are practically no restrictions on the choice of material and color of the flooring. Only one thing is considered an important rule - the correspondence of the texture and tone to the style and color of the main kitchen items.
Apron
The area that separates the wall cabinets from the work surface is designed taking into account:
- the frequency of cleaning the kitchen;
- matching materials to the style of the patinated headset.
A patina kitchen apron is often tiled so that it is less easily soiled
Washable wallpaper, stone, ceramic plate and MDF are suitable for finishing the apron - all materials that can be easily cleaned of stains and cause the kitchen to lose its aesthetic appearance.
Furniture
The kitchen set, decorated with patina, looks great in an ensemble with chairs and tables made of wood, which can also be artificially aged or decorated with carvings.
In a patinated kitchen, wooden furniture with or without upholstery is most often placed.
Appliances
The latest household appliances will not fit into an artificially aged kitchen. It is wiser to hide them behind patina facades.
The shade of the stove and refrigerator should be combined with other items of the kitchen interior. White household appliances should be placed in a bright room, and metallic models in red, green or black.
An exclusively white refrigerator is placed in a snow-white kitchen patinated with a golden and silver composition
Lighting
The lack of light in the kitchen, stylized "antique" is a taboo. In a room with a patina, it is necessary to install at least two lighting fixtures with fluorescent lamps. For a classic-style kitchen, it is advisable to choose luxurious models of chandeliers or lamps.
It is advisable to illuminate a patinated kitchen in several areas, including in the place of cooking

- Large refrigerator and hood in a bright kitchen with patina cannot differ much from the headset in color
So that when you look at a patinated kitchen set you don't have the feeling that it is completely out of place, you need to know a number of strict rules. So, knowing that scuffs do not combine with plastic, the smart home owner will never be accused of bad taste.
