Reasonable approach to business: how to make a crate for metal tiles
Practical people tend to choose metal tiles as a material for roofing, for whom it is important to combine acceptable cost with quality. And in order to lay out a unique metal tile on the roof and be satisfied with the result, you should, according to the rules, install the lathing under the roofing.

Calculation of the crate for metal tiles
The work on the installation of the lathing will not be in vain if you master the following nuances before calculating the lumber:
-
the pitch of the lathing is determined by the type of metal tiles, the degree of inclination of the roof and the width of the projection of the sheets of roofing material beyond the extreme beams of the special base;
Metal shingles differ in wave height, so they are attached in different ways
- the distance between the first two base elements for the roofing should be the smallest;
- the dimensions of the crate depend on the configuration of the drain, for example, when the gutter is attached to the frontal board, the protrusion is increased by 3 cm;
- the width of the roof overhang is measured from the frontal board or the cut of the rafter legs;
-
it is customary to make the lower bar thicker than all other base elements, otherwise the edge of the roofing will begin to sag;
The first lathing plank is under the greatest pressure, so it is made from a thick board
- for the convenience of work, auxiliary materials and tools can be placed on the roof slope after the installation of three rows of battens;
- boards of one row are placed close to each other with their ends and connected exclusively on rafter legs.
The distance between the first two parts of the base under the metal tile is recognized by laying a level one and a half meters long on the rafter leg, and then measuring the gap from the top point of the first wave to the bottom edge of the sheet of roofing material. After that, the measuring tool is extended to the length of the coating sheet, a square is placed against the frontal board and the point of the desired protrusion is put down. A vertical line is drawn from the edge of the frontal board to the mark made.
The first two roof elements are placed closer to each other than the rest
All other elements of the base for metal tiles are determined by making the upper edge of the second board the reference point. The same segments are measured from it, repeating the dimensions of the roofing sheets.
To find out how much material is required for the construction of a continuous sheathing, you need to know the area of the roof and the dimensions of the boards (including the thickness). Suppose a material with a cross section of 25 × 150 mm and a length of 6 m is prepared for construction, and the roof area is 80 m 2. In this case, the calculation is carried out as follows:
- The area of one board is determined (0.15 * 6 = 0.9 m 2).
- It is calculated how many boards are needed (80 / 0.9 = 89 pieces).
- The volume of one board, expressed in cubic meters, is found (0.15 * 0.025 * 6 = 0.0225 m 3).
- The cubic capacity of all the necessary lumber is calculated (89 * 0.0225 = 2.0025 m 3).
When determining the amount of material for a sparse crate, the step between the boards is taken into account. Suppose that the total area of the gable roof is 80 m 2, the width of the slopes is 8 m, the length of the slopes is 5 m, and the pitch of the future crate is 35 cm. These dimensions imply the following computational steps:
- They will find out what the number of boards should be on one slope (5 / 0.35 = 14 pieces).
- Calculate the total molding of wooden planks on the roof slope (14 * 8 = 112 running meters).
- Determine the total molding of boards on both slopes of the roof (112 * 2 = 224 running meters).
- Find the number of boards 6 m long (224/6 = 37 pieces).
-
Find out what the total volume of materials for the crate will be (37 * 0.0225 = 0.8325 m 3).
For a sparse sheathing of material, much less is needed
Errors in calculations often result in an incorrect location of the base for metal shingles. In such cases, the screwed-in screws may not get into the crate boards.
The pitch of the base elements for roofing
There are no “wide spaces” for choosing the distance between the base elements for metal tiles. Still, the material described is very specific: it differs in the repeatability of elements and areas of different degrees of rigidity.
The step of the lathing for metal tiles is determined by the size of the waves of the material and is always indicated by the manufacturer on the packaging
The step of the battens for metal tiles is set by the wavelength of the material. A board or beam is attached where the bottom of the roof ridge will later be. It is in this area that fasteners are immersed in the material.
Only the gap between the first and second element does not obey the accepted rule for installing the crate under the metal tile. This gap must be made narrow: it must be 7 cm less than the wavelength of the material.
The distance from one element to another is measured by their centers
The row of battens located at the overhang is installed with great care. The symmetry of the installation of sheets of roofing material depends on its evenness, therefore, in the area of / u200b / u200bthe overhang of the roof, the boards are mounted after leveling the rafter legs (relative to the wall of the building) using a cord and a saw.
The first line of crate elements for metal tiles should be mounted higher on the rise of the wave. As a result of this clever trick, it will be possible to bring to zero the differences in the height of the edges of the first sheet of material and subsequent elements of the roofing, laid vertically. Usually the first row of the base for metal tiles is raised by 28–75 mm.
The bottom board of the sheathing should be higher than all the others.
It is necessary to partially lower the edge of the waterproofing material through the bottom board of the lathing into the gutter. In order to avoid damage to the film, the sheathing element located at the eaves of the roof is beveled to an angle of 120-140 degrees relative to the end part of the rafter.
If the first planks of the base for the metal tile were laid with errors, then certain problems should be expected:
- inconsistency of fragments of material;
- the appearance of wrinkles on the roof slopes;
- poor fixation of sheets on the base;
- unreliable fastening of the cornice and pediment strips.
In some areas, battens for metal shingles must be installed extremely frequently
In the places of joints and abutments of the roof, a continuous crate is made, supporting special roofing elements
Such areas are valleys, where a base is created with longitudinal strips 1 cm wide on each roof slope and the entire length of the joint, and areas of contact with pipes, attic windows or other structures above the roof. Especially for them, a frequent lathing with a width of 15 to 20 cm is usually equipped, reinforced with a board or timber.
In addition, despite the length of the step, on the upper section of each slope, they almost always attach a board. As a result of its strong connection with the ridge, the sheets of metal do not sag, which ensures easy installation of the ridge of metal tiles.
The thickness of the battens
To lay the crate under the metal tile, you will need to make a choice between materials such as:
- edged board with a section of 2.5x10 cm, which is considered an indispensable material for arranging an uncomplicated and lightweight roof;
- edged plank with a section of 3.2x10 cm, actively used for the construction of roof lathing with a non-standard configuration or a special coating - metal tiles with a galvanized base 0.5 mm thick;
- a bar with a section of 5x5 cm or 4x6 cm, used on the roof, in which the elements of the rafter system are located at a great distance from each other (more than 90 cm).
In most cases, an edged board with a section of 2.5x10 cm is used to create the lathing
The thickness of the lathing elements must be sufficient to withstand the weight of the person involved in the installation of the roof or its further repair.
When preparing for the installation of the crate, they almost always face a problem: the thickness of the purchased boards is not the same. For example, having bought a batch of wooden planks 3 cm thick, they often find that they contain boards 2.5 or even 3.5 cm thick.
So that the installation of the crate does not make you get nervous, it is better to sort the planks into thick and thin elements in advance. If you ignore this advice, you will have to prepare for unpleasant consequences - changes in the level of the base under the roofing material. Because of this, it will be incredibly difficult to lay metal tiles on the crate.
The lumber for the construction of the sheathing should be sorted by thickness to avoid problems when laying tiles
Installation of battens
When planning to build a crate, it must be borne in mind that for a roof with valleys, the base elements under the roofing material are laid from top to bottom, taking into account the length of the roof tail. Sometimes, if it is too long, an additional board is mounted, which will help to firmly fix the skate bar.
Installation of battens for metal tiles is performed in the following sequence:
-
The first base element is placed ideally along the eaves with a measuring tape. At this moment, make sure that the board does not go beyond the eaves overhang.
The first row of battens is carefully aligned with the eaves
- After 30–40 cm (the distance is equal to the wavelength reduced by 7 cm), the next sheathing element is placed. But before that, they must be convinced of the correct choice of the gap, for which two planks are placed on the ground at a certain distance from each other and covered with sheets of tiles. If the ledge turns out to be too long, the decision regarding the gap must be corrected, because the water will overflow over the edge of the gutter. A very short ledge is also a reason to make changes, as moisture will seep into the area between the gutter and the frontal board.
-
End and ridge boards are fixed on the roof. The wind bar is placed above the level of the crate, that is, at a height of 3.5–5.5 cm, because this parameter corresponds to the rise of a sheet of roofing material. To facilitate the task of fixing the ridge in the desired area, additional wooden elements with a section of 2.5x10 cm are attached.
To simplify the fastening of the ridge at the upper junction of the roof, the rows of lathing are mounted more often
-
The rest of the crate elements are laid out so that a gap equal to the wavelength is created between them (usually 35 or 40 cm).
The rows of the main sheathing are mounted with a step recommended by the manufacturer of the roofing material
- In the place where the pipes from the furnace equipment pass through the roof, near the attic window and near the wall (when a multi-level roof is being built), additional strips are fixed.
-
Where necessary, attach the brackets that will be needed to screw the gutters. Each subsequent fastening element is placed 50–60 cm farther than the previous one. The brackets must be installed along the edges of the roof, and they are fixed in such a way that the gutter is inclined at least 3 degrees. The angle is measured with a building level and a cord.
When installing the brackets of the drainage system, it is necessary to ensure the slope of the gutters towards the drainage funnel
- A cornice strip is attached to the overhang of the roof. At the same time, they act in a special way - the bottom edge of the board overlaps the edge of the groove. In this way, it will be possible to take care of the drainage of moisture from the bar directly into the sump. The bottom board of the base is nailed to the rafter legs under the metal tile.
In the case of using metal tiles, the lathing elements are supposed to be fixed on the rafter system with nails, the length of which is several times greater than the thickness of the board being nailed. The length of the fasteners is standard, ie 3–3.5 cm, because thicker nails can split wooden planks.
For fastening the lathing under the metal tiles, nails with a length of 35 mm are suitable
To each rafter leg, the sheathing board is fixed with two nails nailed exactly to the center of the rafter and always along the edges of the plank.

Fastening metal tiles to the crate
Getting started with the installation of metal tiles, you need to familiarize yourself with some rules:
- cutting metal tiles (if necessary) is allowed only with a saw with a circular cutter or metal scissors;
- screwing the screws must be done at a reduced speed of rotation of the screwdriver, since uncontrolled screwing of fasteners into the metal tiles will lead to their curvature and poor blockage of the drilled hole;
- in order not to damage the laid roofing, it is supposed to move around the locations of the crate (along the bottom of the waves of the material);
-
hexagonal self-tapping screws with a rubber gasket - a variant of fasteners for metal tiles - it is required to immerse in the material strictly perpendicular to the elements of the lathing.
Self-tapping screws need to be carefully screwed into the bottom of the wave at low screwdriver speeds
The installation of metal shingles begins as required by the roof configuration. The gable roof is covered with material from the ends, and the hipped roof is covered, starting from the ridge.
To attach metal shingles to a wooden base, proceed as follows:
- One piece of material is joined to another in such a way that the next sheet covers the lock of the previous one.
-
Self-tapping screws are twisted in place of the line conventionally drawn 1–1.5 cm below the stamping line between the waves of the material.
Sheets of metal tiles are placed with an overlap, starting from the bottom row
Joining sheets of metal tiles
Sheets of metal tiles must be joined along the waves (horizontal joining) and in rows (vertical joining):
- Wave docking protects the roof covering from crosswinds and enhances the appearance of roof slopes. The fasteners are screwed in below the stamping line, from the wave to the outer edge of the sheet.
-
Docking in rows involves the connection of tile elements on the boards of the sheathing. The direction of installation of the roof covering is from the eaves to the ridge area. Fixation is carried out in the place where the third waves of all sheets of material are located. At the same time, when they are rebuilt to mount the next row, they are shifted to either side by one ridge.
Fixation of sheets of metal tiles is carried out in the third wave below the stamping line
