Avocado: a brief description of an exotic fruit

What is an avocado? This is a green fruit with a specific savory taste. It has a pin-shaped shape, a fairly strong skin, and in the center of the fruit is hidden a large spherical (in some varieties, in the form of an elongated ball) bone with a diameter of about 4-5 cm.

The scientific name for avocado is American Perseus

The flesh of an avocado can be similar in consistency to cold butter or very soft cheese. It is very smooth, soft, but keeps its shape well. The pulp is not as juicy as most fruits. Avocado tastes like nuts.

General cleaning rules

For a successful fruit peel, remember to follow these general rules:

  • use a sharp knife. No matter how trite, but many cleaning problems are caused precisely by blunt kitchen tools. Despite the fact that the avocado flesh is quite soft and can be easily cut even with a table knife, the peel of our fruit is very strong;

Don't forget to sharpen your knife

  • a small knife (up to 15 cm long) is suitable for cutting and peeling avocados. A longer device will be inconvenient;
  • remember to wash the fruit thoroughly before cleaning. Most avocados have a rough skin, so it is recommended to wash them under hot water with a sponge. It would seem why - in most recipes only pure pulp is used. However, when peeling, dirt and germs can jump from the rind to the edible part of the fruit.

Peeling avocados for different purposes: step-by-step instructions

Peeling and slicing an avocado is a snap if you follow the simple instructions.

To completely cleanse the avocado pulp by removing the skin and pits:

  1. Slice the avocado in half lengthwise. To do this, enter the knife in the center from the top and drag it down until you hit the bone.

If the knife is not sharp enough, then this step may be difficult - be careful

  2. Slice the avocado lengthways around the pit, slicing the flesh around it. You should have two halves of the fruit - one with a bone, the other without.

Press the knife firmly against the bone

  3. Pick up the bone with a spoon. The bone will jump out of the fruit by itself. Alternatively, hit the bone with a knife so that the blade sinks into it shallowly. Twist the knife to the left and to the right - so the bone will lag behind the pulp. Lift the knife along with the bone - it will come out of the avocado very easily. This method works well only with a well-sharpened blade.

You should have two identical halves without pits.

  4. Now that you have two identical halves in your hands, you need to cut them in half more to make quarters.
  5. Quarters can be easily peeled off by pulling on the top edge. If necessary, help yourself with a spoon - insert it between the peel and pulp and carefully separate one from the other.

  6. Cut the flesh as you like - into cubes or thin slices, placing the avocado on the flat side.

Due to the consistency of the pulp, cutting the avocado in the right way is not difficult.

How to make an avocado skin boat

Some recipes require you to keep the skin boat. It is often used to make a variety of snacks. For example, a baked avocado with an egg is a delicious and healthy dish.

The easiest way to make boats is to cut the avocado in half and remove the seed. To do this, just repeat steps 1–3 from the instructions for fully peeling an avocado. Then, using a teaspoon or a small knife, you need to remove the skin around the seed, adjacent to the pulp.

Avocado boats are usually filled with salads

If you need to remove the pulp, leaving only a thin layer at the peel, use a teaspoon:

  1. Slice the avocado lengthwise and remove the pit as usual.
  2. Use a teaspoon to remove the desired amount of pulp. The ripe fruit has a soft, easy-to-remove flesh, so there will be no problem.

Leave the gap you want between the peel and the spoon so that the avocado pulp is also present in the snack

How to peel an unripe avocado

An unripe fruit is not difficult to identify. The area under the stalk (the top of the skittles) will be yellowish.

Unripe avocados have a tighter flesh and are slightly more difficult to peel. To do this, you have to use a knife:

  1. Without cutting the fruit, peel the skin off with a knife. Try to remove as thin a layer as possible so that you have more pulp left.

Peeling with a knife is more time consuming and may have less pulp than peeling off with your fingers or with a teaspoon

  2. Now, as usual, you can cut the fruit in half.
  3. Removing the seed from an unripe fruit can be difficult. Use a tablespoon. Insert it between the bone and the pulp and gently slide it around the bone. This will separate the seed from the pulp. After that, delete it as usual.

The easiest way is to remove the bone with a tablespoon - its shape and size are ideal for this.

How to use avocado pulp

Due to its specific taste, avocado, unlike most other fruits, is often used in savory dishes. For example, one of the most popular recipes is guacamole, a Mexican sauce. It tastes a bit like sour cream mixed with spicy horseradish. The main ingredient in guacamole is the avocado pulp, softened until smooth.

Often, avocado is an ingredient for everyone's favorite rolls and sushi. In this case, the pulp is cut into long slices or strips. In this case, additional ingredients can be both vegetables (for example, cucumber), and fish or seafood. Avocados go great with all of them.

However, this exotic fruit also has a place in desserts. One of my favorite sweet recipes is avocado fruit salad. To prepare it, I use all the fruits I can find in the house. Usually these are apples, bananas, tangerines and, in fact, avocados. Grapefruit and mango are great. After finely chopping all the ingredients into cubes, I mix them, sprinkle with lime juice (you can also use lemon) and leave for half an hour so that the fruits are mutually saturated with juices. The cooking process takes no more than ten minutes. Avocado prevents the salad from becoming cloying and overly saturated.

You can add mint leaves to the finished salad to taste.

Avocado is a great ingredient in dishes, giving them completeness and fullness. This fruit favorably sets off the flavors of the other ingredients of the recipe. Cleaning it properly will help you quickly and easily use the pulp for your culinary delights.
