What is a resume

A resume is a visiting card of each employee, a brief description of all his work activities, existing skills and qualities, as well as the education received. This document should indicate everything that one way or another will be of interest to the employer, therefore, those skills you have that are in no way connected with your chosen profession should not be written.

Good companies have the following system for finding new employees:

  1. Collection of CVs from candidates.
  2. Study of these documents.
  3. Selection of suitable candidates.
  4. Scheduling selected people for interviews and rejecting everyone else.

Many pretend to be good jobs, but choose only the best

The most important, of course, is the study of the resume, which usually takes about a couple of minutes. That is why this document should be drawn up very clearly, competently, without unnecessary information, preferably according to a special template that facilitates perception.

Paper or electronic - which is better

A resume, like any other document, can be presented in two forms: paper and electronic. The choice of format directly depends on how you are looking for a job. If you want to get a job in a specific company (one or more) and it or one of its branches is located in your city, then you must bring a document in paper form - the employer will see that you are interested in looking for work, once you have found the time and arrived at the office, to submit your resume. If the company where you want to work is small (that is, the flow of new employees - your competitors - is insignificant) and is located in another city and you do not have the opportunity to bring documents, you can send them by regular mail (for example, by registered mail).

An electronic resume should be written in an adequate font that is easy to read without increasing the size of the document

If you simply submit your resume to one of the job search sites, then, of course, it must be in electronic form. If you think that there is a large flow of new employees in the company where you want to work, and you cannot personally bring a paper resume, then you can send it to the HR department in electronic form.

In order for the resume to be well received by the employer, it is necessary to break it down into separate parts:

  • surname, name, patronymic: write your details and highlight them in some way: in bold or larger type;
  • personal data: date of birth, age (the employer has no desire to calculate how old you are), marital status, whether there are children and how old they are; if you are a citizen of another state - please indicate this;
  • contacts: you can skip the separate section and write together with the previous part; the address, contact numbers, e-mail address are indicated; you can specify the address of residence, but not the full one, but, for example, the district or the nearest metro station;

    For convenience, you can fill out ready-made templates by inserting or removing separate sections

  • purpose: the position or the type of work that you are looking for; here you can also indicate the salary that you would like to have; it is advisable to indicate not a specific amount, but a minimum threshold, adding the word "from";
  • education: companies need people either with higher education (maybe incomplete higher education) or with secondary vocational education (college, technical school, etc.); school education is of no interest to anyone; the year of admission and the year of graduation from the educational institution, its name (full) and the city where the training took place, faculty or institute, specialty (as in the diploma) and qualifications are indicated; if there are several higher educations, then in the first place it is necessary to put the one that is more suitable for the given vacancy, and if there is no difference, then they are put in chronological order;
  • additional education: courses, trainings, seminars (you must attach photocopies of certificates and certificates); indicate only what may be useful to you in your work, but not everything that you have ever attended; first, the year of completion of the courses, their duration, full name and the company that conducted them are indicated;

    For any position, you must correctly draw up a resume

  • qualifications: the most significant, in your opinion, skills and abilities that you have and that can be useful in your work; you can indicate achievements, work experience; the item is optional;
  • work experience: all labor activity (starting from the last place of work); the period of work (month and year of the beginning - month and year of the end), the name and scope of the company, the position held (or several), a list of your responsibilities are indicated; you can indicate your main achievements in this position; main point;
  • Additional Information:

    • special skills: speed of typing on a computer, driving experience or any other;
    • knowledge of languages: the native language is put first, and then all those languages that you know follow; for European languages, you can also indicate the level of proficiency;
    • computer skills: the software you own and their level of knowledge;
    • personal qualities: indicate your positive traits that will be useful in this work;
    • interests and hobbies: list everything you enjoy doing (fishing, football, skiing, walking); if you indicate "travel", then list the countries you have been to;

If you have no work experience

If you have no work experience (you are a student or just graduated from any educational institution), then you do not need to insert parts related to work experience in your resume. Some write in the "work experience" section that they do not have one or simply put a dash - this looks like a disadvantage, and the likelihood that you will be invited for an interview decreases.

Internship (even 1 month) can be indicated as work experience

In order to find a job, you should not indicate that you are without experience or a student - this is beside the point. The only thing that is always appropriate to write in such cases is "trainee". Of course, interns receive less money, but there are fewer requirements for them.

What to look out for

Particular attention should be paid to the following sections:

  • the purpose of your job search demonstrates the reasons for your desire to find a job, so this section should interest the employer;
  • additional education sometimes plays a greater role than the main one, because it indicates your desire to work in this particular area;
  • qualification;
  • experience;
  • knowledge of languages may not be directly related to the position for which you are applying, but it can be a good help with career growth;
  • interests and hobbies speak about a person's outlook - the wider it is, the more useful the employee;
CV with photo
CV with photo

The photo for the resume should be like a passport, so that there is nothing superfluous

In the modern world, job search is the provision of his services to the employer, a person sells his labor, his time, skills and abilities, therefore, roughly speaking, as a quality product, he must also provide a good wrapper - his photo, so that recruiting managers know about who they even deal with. It is recommended to add a photo to your resume only when you submit a document to a specific company, and do not post it on a bulletin board on the Internet.

Common mistakes in resume writing

Perhaps the most important and rather common mistake is that people write a whole essay on the topic "Why you should take me." Recruitment managers in good companies have 2-3 minutes to study the resume of one candidate, so the shorter and clearer the document is, the greater the chance that it will be studied carefully. To do this, you need to structure the text, highlight key points and section titles in different fonts.

Manuscript

No need to write whole novels about how wonderful you are - information should be short and succinct

In the absence of work experience, people often write about it. It is important to remember that the purpose of a resume is to interest the employer in you, to show your best sides, and the lack of work skills is by no means an advantage, so do not include the "work experience" section at all.

Lack of relevant information plays against you. It is very difficult to choose what is really important, no one argues with this, but you can do the following: search the Internet or come up with the skills that would be needed by the person you are applying for. Write down everything point by point, mark the skills you really need, and among them, highlight those that you have. Just write them. All others are unnecessary.

On the Internet, you can find the skills that employees in a particular field really need

Each person has a very necessary and useful skill in this area, but simply describing it is not enough, it is necessary to give an example of its use. If you say you have good communication skills and run a blog or something else, write about it, confirm your skills. This will definitely not be superfluous.

If you took any courses, trainings, etc., be sure to attach some kind of document confirming this

Certificate of completion of training

Indicate either the most significant or the most recent courses that you took if there are a lot of them

To emphasize your importance to the company, in your resume, indicate your achievements in past jobs with such strong words as: created, initiated, developed, and so on - this will indicate your active position.

Grammar and punctuation errors are often a problem when looking for a job. This is due to the fact that employers are looking for specialists not in any specific area, but a competent person in all areas at once. Moreover, literacy lies in the fact that a person has a little more than a superficial idea, he has a broad outlook that can be used in one way or another in his work. That is why it is so important to describe such a point as interests and hobbies: the more a person can do, the more developed he is, the better for the company.

It is very important to write truthful information, because sooner or later the employer will find out that you do not know how to do something, then the situation may be very unpleasant for you

Specific requirements for certain professions

Each vacancy has its own professional characteristics, which should be reflected in the resume in order to win over the employer.

Medical worker

All medical workers must have the appropriate education: at least secondary specialized medical education (for nurses), but, of course, it is better if it is higher. Regardless of which educational institution you graduated from, you had an internship - without this, you simply could not get a diploma. Therefore, if you do not have work experience yet, then in the appropriate section in the resume, indicate all the information about the practice you have completed: when, where, what specific course, what functions you performed, and the result - what you learned.

If you have a long experience, it is not necessary to indicate education, but if it is small or none at all, education is important

Teacher, educator

A teacher and educator must have only a higher education - pedagogical. If you have another education in any subject specialty, this will be your advantage, but without a teacher's diploma you will not be allowed to work with children.

Even a physical education teacher must have a teacher education

Lawyer

The time of specialists in law is very expensive, so it will be a positive moment if the resume is written in a strict business style. The applicant must obtain a higher education diploma in this area - a variety of courses only improve their qualifications, but do not replace a full-fledged education.

Administrator

The administrator may not have a higher education, but it is only welcomed, since it speaks of the broad outlook of the applicant. Particular attention in this position is drawn to the knowledge of any foreign languages (especially English and Chinese, which in our time are international).

It is advisable to add a photo to the administrator's resume

Accountant

The accountant does not have requirements for higher education, but it is necessary to graduate from a technical school or college in this specialty. If you have a degree in economics, this will be a great advantage for you. In addition to education, the employer pays special attention to the knowledge that the candidate possesses in the field of accounting: experience in accounting, skills in preparing all documents, working with documentation, and so on. Include anything that you think is really important for this position.

Driver

A driver is not required to have any special education, but must have a license (and, in an amicable way, at least some driving experience in a certain type of transport) of a specific category. It will be an advantage to have knowledge of the area where you want to work and the design of any vehicle you may need to work on. In their achievements, it is necessary to indicate specific facts (for example, “I have been driving for 10 years, I have never been a participant in an accident” will be very good).

The security guard does not need any special education, but it is important to possess various kinds of weapons and different types of fighting. If you have a permit to use a weapon, you must report this, and bring a document confirming this fact to the interview.

Manager, consultant

Consultants and salespeople do not need any education at all, although a higher education in psychology will not be superfluous. If you are looking for a job in some big city, knowledge of foreign languages will be a big advantage. In the section of personal achievements, you need to indicate specific numbers (for example, “in July 2017, I sold laptops for 400 thousand rubles”).

Even for the position of a consultant, it is necessary to correctly draw up a resume, indicating the skills of communication with people

A properly formatted resume can interest the employer in your services, but the most important thing is a personal interview, in which you must confirm everything that you wrote about in your business card, and reveal your “trump cards” that you were silent about.
