Description of pear variety August dew

August dew appeared as a result of crossing the varieties Tenderness and Triumph Pakgam. The author of the development is the breeder of the All-Russian Research Institute of Genetics and Breeding of Fruit Plants S. P. Yakovlev.

The height of an adult August dew tree is about 3 m

The August dew tree is not tall - 2.5–3 m. It grows quickly, buds wake up rapidly in spring. The crown is not thickened, slightly drooping. The branches extend from the trunk at an angle of almost 90 °. Leaves are medium in size, dark green in color, oblong in shape with jagged edges. The flowers are small (up to 7-10 per inflorescence), white, with long pistils.

The fruits are even, 120–150 g (there are also larger specimens - up to 200 g). Ripe pears are yellowish-green in color with a slight blush on the side. The skin is smooth. The pulp is fine-grained, white, juicy, sweet on the palate (sugar content is more than 8%) with sourness.

The usual weight of August dew fruits is about 150 g

The August dew manifests most clearly its qualities in the southern and central regions of the middle zone of the country.

Advantages and disadvantages (table)

pros Minuses
Rapid tree growth The tree is considered self-fertile, but this figure is low, so pollinators are needed on the site
Early maturity - the tree gives the first harvest in 3-4 years of life With a large yield, fruits of unequal weight
High yield - even the first harvest can be considerable - up to 15 kg Due to the fast and active growth, constant pruning is necessary
High winter hardiness and drought resistance There are lean seasons
Scab resistance
Good commercial quality of fruits

Planting pears

Seat selection

The pear is a heat-loving plant, so it will grow well in a sunny area, protected from the wind. Groundwater should be approximately 1.5–2 m above the ground surface. The pear does not tolerate moisture stagnation. Suitable soil is loamy or sandy loam. Clay soil is not suitable, sandy - only when making abundant dressings.

Experienced gardeners consider the beginning of October to be the optimal time for planting. Before the winter cold, the tree will have enough time to take root. If for some reason it was not possible to do this, the end of April will come next year.

For planting, you need to buy 1- or 2-year-old seedlings from the nursery. When buying, check the condition of the roots and trunk - they should be strong, not dry, well developed, without damage.

Step-by-step planting process

  1. Dig a hole 1 m in diameter and 0.5 m deep.
  2. Fill 2/3 of the hole with a mixture of fertilizers (70 g of ammonium nitrate, 130-140 g of potassium sulfate, 2 buckets of humus).

  3. Place the seedling in the hole, holding it.

The roots of the tree in the hole must be carefully straightened

  4. To support the young tree, strengthen the stake at a distance of 20-25 cm from the trunk.
  5. Sprinkle the seedling with soil, gently tamping. The root collar should not be covered with earth.

  6. Tie the number of support to the tree.

Watering

You need to water a young pear weekly (1 bucket of water per tree). An adult plant is watered every 7-10 days with 20 liters of water (this amount needs to be "stretched" for a whole day, for example, a bucket of water in the morning and a bucket in the evening). Spray irrigation is suitable for the variety. Moistening is mandatory in July and August - the period when the tree lays buds for next year's harvest. At the end of summer, watering is stopped in order to slow down the growth of young shoots. They may not have enough time to get stronger before the first cold weather.

During watering, you need to loosen the near-trunk circle, destroying weeds.

Top dressing

If there is a lot of sand in the soil, then fertilizing is carried out every year, on more fertile soils, it is enough to apply fertilizers once every 2-3 years.

  1. In the spring, at the end of March - beginning of April, 1-2 kg of manure are applied for each 1 sq. M. m of the trunk circle.
  2. During the flowering of the pear, in order to set the fruits, a 0.1 percent solution of boric acid (10 g per 10 l of water for one tree) is added.
  3. After the autumn leaf fall, a mixture of mineral fertilizers (ammonium nitrate - 20 g, urea - 15 g, superphosphate - 50 g) will contribute to the growth and development of the tree.

Pruning

Pruning is an important activity in the care of all fruit trees. The first pruning August dew can survive after planting. Branches are removed at a height of about 0.5 m.

The best time for this event is spring. During this period, branches damaged by the sun or frost can be cut, as well as too long or thickening crowns. All sections are smeared with pitch or paint.

Autumn pruning aims to remove dry and old branches that are then burned.

Preparation for wintering

In late autumn, trees are whitewashed with lime mortar or special tree paints. This layer on the trunk will protect the tree from sunburn of the bark, which can occur in winter and spring.

The near-trunk circle must be cleaned of fallen leaves, and water-charging irrigation must be carried out (70–100 l). Near the roots, cover the ground with sawdust with a layer of 15 cm.

If the region has cold and little snowy winters, the bole should be wrapped with non-woven covering material that allows air and moisture to pass through (agrotex, spunbond).

Ways to combat diseases and pests (table)

Diseases / pests Signs Prevention and control measures
Black cancer The appearance on the bark of wounds and cracks with brown spots around, red marks on fruits and leaves.
  • Destruction of affected leaves and fruits.
  • Removing diseased bark with a knife: grab about 2 cm of healthy area just in case.
  • Treatment of wounds with copper sulfate (35 g per 1 liter of water).
  • Treat the affected areas with a mixture of mullein and clay.
Powdery mildew The appearance of powdery spots on leaves and flowers, which in the future acquire a violet-gray color.
  • Destruction of affected plant parts.
  • Treatment during the appearance of leaves with Topaz (1 ampoule per bucket of water).
  • Regular watering.
  • Colloidal sulfur solution (100 g per 10 l).
Fruit rot Brown spots on fruits, drying out and falling off.
  • Destruction of affected fruits.
  • Spraying after flowering with Oxyhom (20 g per 1 bucket of water).
  • 1% solution of Bordeaux liquid.
Insects (pear mite, moth, etc.) Drying of leaves, shoots.
  • Mechanical collection of insects.
  • In the spring, spraying with a solution of the Nitrafen preparation (300 g per bucket of water).
  • Kinmiks, Agravertin, Iskra and others. Use according to instructions.

Collection, storage and use of crops

The fruits begin to ripen from mid-August to mid-September (depending on the climate and weather in the region). The early maturity of the variety allows you to harvest the first crop (10-15 kg) already at the 3-4th years of the tree's life. The maximum collection reaches 200 centners per hectare.

The variety belongs to the table variety, perfectly suitable for fresh consumption. Of course, the canned preparations from the August dew are excellent.

In a cool place, pears are stored for about 2 weeks, up to 3 months in the refrigerator.
