Front doors with glass

Doors with partial or full glazing are found everywhere today. The strength of the glass has reached such a degree that it perfectly copes with the task of protecting the premises from intruders, while the appearance remains light and airy. New technologies in the manufacture of glass bags, resistant to temperature and UV radiation, allow the use of translucent elements in combination with any other materials - wood, plastic or metal.

Design features of entrance doors with glass

The purpose of the entrance doors is to protect the house or apartment from outside intrusion. And not only from people or animals, but also from natural elements - wind, rain, hot or frosty air. Therefore, the choice of materials for the manufacture and installation of doors is of great importance. Entrance doors are made from components that can withstand various loads over a long period of time, withstand mechanical, chemical and thermal effects. The use of glass in the manufacture of external doors has become possible due to the rapid development of high-tech technologies and the improvement of the process of its tempering.

Types of tempered glass for entrance doors

In the construction of houses and, in particular, for the manufacture of entrance doors, three types of glass are used.

  1. Tempered. Formed from ordinary sheet glass by heat treatment - heating to 650–700 o C and subsequent rapid cooling to normal temperature. The result is an increase in the strength of the amorphous structure by a factor of 5–7. Residual compressive stress is retained within the material, which ensures safety. When broken, the glass shatters into a large number of small pieces with blunt edges, which cannot cause injury or cut. In addition, tempered glass has another useful property - heat resistance, which allows it to be used in a wide range. The only vulnerable spot of such a semi-finished product is sensitivity to mechanical stress at the ends. Even a minor blow can destroy a whole sheet if it falls into the zone of residual stress of the material. Tempered glass cannot be machined - drilled or cut.

    Tempered glass undergoes a special heat treatment, as a result of which it acquires increased fragility in the area of the ends

  2. Triplex. It is made of ordinary glass by gluing several layers (from two or more silicate or organic glass connected by a polymer film or composite material). Triplex production is accompanied by pressing and heating. In case of mechanical damage - impact, bending, etc. - the glass cracks into a small web, but does not lose transparency and integrity. That is why car windshields are made from it. There are also special products with electric heating, noise-absorbing properties, electrochromic, mirror, colored, etc.

    Triplex is produced by gluing several sheets of ordinary glass, followed by pressing at a high temperature

  3. Reinforced glass. Contains metal reinforcement in the form of a woven mesh inside. In the event of a breakdown, it retains debris that could otherwise be dangerous. Reinforcement is laid in the glass at the stage of rolling silicate blanks.

Arrangement of entrance doors with glass

An entrance door with glass, like any other door, consists of three main elements:

  • door frame;
  • door leaf;
  • accessories (or component parts).

    Front door device
    Front door device

    The standard scheme of the entrance door device assumes the presence of a frame, curtain and fittings

Glass can serve as a decorative element, observation platform or the main material for the manufacture of a door leaf. The dimensions and area of glass depend on the construction and design of the canvas.

In the regulations governing the production of metal and fire doors, entrance doors with glass are divided into two categories:

  • the percentage of glazing is less than 25% of the door leaf area;
  • glass occupies more than 25% of the canvas area.

Separate technical requirements have been developed for each group. It is believed that a quarter of the area (from 2 m 2 this is 50 cm 2) is the critical limit, after which the properties of the surface of the web as a whole change. Therefore, places with glass inserts are reinforced with additional stiffening ribs. Fire doors with a glazing area of more than 25% undergo additional testing for resistance to thermal radiation transmission.

According to the opening mechanism, the entrance doors are divided into several types.

  1. Swing. The traditional design is the suspension of the door leaf on hinges located along one edge of the door frame. This is the most common type of entrance door in Europe.

    Swinging design of entrance doors is the most common in our country and in Europe

  2. Sliding. A distinctive feature is the absence of a door frame. The blade runs along the guide profile (or profiles). The door is suspended using a rocker mechanism and a ball bearing group.

  3. Pendulum. The door leaf rotates around the vertical axis in different directions. Pendulum hinges have a complex design that combines a suspension mechanism and a door closer that returns the sash to its initial position. The canvas opens in both directions, depending on the direction of the person's movement.

    Pendulum doors can open in both directions due to special hinges installed in the vertical axis of the sash

  4. Carousel. The leaf (or sashes) rotate around one axis located in the middle of the doorway. In private residential housing construction, such structures are not used. Most often, a revolving door can be seen at the checkpoint of an enterprise, in hotels, supermarkets, etc.

    The doors revolve like a carousel, allowing the flow of people in both directions

  5. Folding doors or accordion doors. The door leaf is compactly folded in the opening. The sash structure is a set of several canvases connected into a single whole by hinged hinges.

Other types of doors - sliding, sliding, revolving and others - are varieties of the types described above with minor structural changes.

Varieties of exterior doors with glazing

Below are the most common designs of entrance doors with glass.

Doors with aluminum glass

It is no exaggeration to say that the combination of an aluminum frame with glass is an example of the Art Nouveau style. The materials are completely insensitive to weathering, fire, radiation, are not harmful to humans and animals, and practically do not require maintenance. They are rarely used in private houses, the main sphere is offices, shops, public institutions. The cost of such a door is relatively high, but the investment pays off due to its long service life. An important parameter that you need to pay attention to when purchasing is the quality of the aluminum profile. Unlike the window profile, which has a thickness of up to 50 mm, the door frame of an aluminum door is made from a multi-chamber (from 5 to 7 chambers) profile with a thickness of 70 mm.

The internal structure of the aluminum profile includes thermal breaks that prevent doors from cooling

Not only the overall width of the product is important, but also the thickness of the walls. The level of sound insulation and heat resistance depends on this. Profile painting is carried out at the factory, therefore drips or other defects characteristic of manual paint brushes are unacceptable on the surface.

Double-glazed entrance doors

The glass unit used for entrance doors comes in two sizes:

  • single chamber (thickness 24 mm);
  • two-chamber (thickness 32 mm).

Installation is carried out in several ways.

  1. The glass is mounted in a frame made of wood, metal or plastic, which has a special groove for installing a glass unit. A rubber seal is mandatory between the glass and the door.

    Plastic entrance door with glass unit

    The stack is installed in a special groove on the frame of the plastic door

  2. The double-glazed window is mounted overlay on the canvas as an additional element. Most often this is a variant of a viewing window, which, if necessary, can be closed with a lid. In this case, fixation is carried out using glazing beads installed on the inner surface of the canvas.

A big advantage of entrance doors equipped with a glass unit is the ability to freely view the external space. The glass unit consists of tempered glass, which has increased strength. But even if damaged, it is easy to replace. Dismantling takes place in three steps:

  • disassembly of the decorative cover;
  • detaching glazing beads;
  • extraction of a double-glazed window.

When choosing, you need to pay attention to the thickness of the glass, since the degree of heat and sound protection depends on this.

Wrought iron doors with glass

Metal entrance doors made of steel with elements of forging and glass are high value products. As a rule, they are made to order according to an individual project and in a single copy. It can definitely be argued that these are elite class doors, that is, a luxury item.

When choosing, you should pay attention to the following design features of the doors.

  1. The thickness of the steel sheet that makes up the main surface of the door. In this case, the principle "the thicker the better" does not work - with an increase in the section of the sheet, the weight of the door leaf increases sharply. This leads to an excess of the permissible load on the hinges and to their rapid wear. The optimum metal thickness is considered to be from 1.5 to 2 mm.
  2. Decorative forging method. It is of two types:

    • hot (metal heating temperature is from 700 to 850 o C);
    • cold (processing takes place at room temperature). Cold worked metal is more ductile and more resistant to corrosion.
  3. Insulation type. Located in the cavities of the door leaf, the insulator prevents freezing and also serves as a sound absorber. In addition, the material must not be flammable. Therefore, preference is given to slabs made of mineral or basalt fibers, as well as polyurethane foam, which is used to fill the inner cavities of the door leaf.

    The cavities between the door linings are most often filled with mineral wool

In order to increase the reliability of forged entrance doors with glass, two types of locks are used: cylinder and lever locks (safe). An armored manganese alloy plate is installed on top of the mechanism. Finding a master key for such locks is very problematic.

Solid glass entrance doors

Glass entrance doors are made of tempered glass with a thickness of 8 to 12 mm. Another name for this material is display glass. There are four main types of such doors according to the type of suspension and the opening mechanism - swing, sliding, carousel and pendulum. In addition, a distinction is made between single-leaf and double-leaf glass doors.

Describing the advantages of glass entrance doors, you can use such epithets as "amazing strength", "absolute unpretentiousness" and "stylish solution". They are all true. The only significant drawback of display glass doors is considered to be a rather high price, as well as the absence of a threshold, due to which cold air penetrates into the building.

Sliding glass doors

One of the varieties of an entrance glass door is a sliding structure. It differs in that the door frame is absent, and the leaf (one or more) is suspended above the doorway using a roller mechanism and a guide profile. The flaps are opened by sliding the flaps on the sides.

Sliding glass doors
Sliding glass doors

Glass sliding doors have the necessary strength and do not take up space in the entrance area

Some models of sliding entrance doors suggest the presence of a niche in the wall or a pencil case, into which the door leaf goes during opening. According to users, the main advantage of sliding doors is their compactness and increased resistance to burglary (since access to the suspension is closed by a wall). Some doors are supplied with an electric drive, and then the house turns into an impregnable fortress.

When choosing sliding doors, experts recommend paying attention to three factors that are the key to a long service life, reliability and ease of use.

  1. The material from which the sash is made. Since in our case we are talking about entrance doors, the requirements for the canvas are high. It must be durable, tempered and shockproof glass.
  2. Fittings. It is necessary to select components from well-known manufacturers, time-tested and producing high quality products. The service life of the doors directly depends on this.
  3. Door design. The offer from manufacturers is very large, so the selection is carried out taking into account the exterior of the building. The door should organically fit into the overall picture of the facade, not violate the style and harmony.

Frost resistant glass front door

For the manufacture of frost-resistant entrance doors, double-glazed windows filled with argon are used. Because of this dew point temperature is reduced to -50 to C. In combination with the energy-saving glass, and shock film package is highly resistant to freezing. Together with thermal insulation, the soundproofing properties of the glass unit also increase.

Entrance doors with frost-resistant glass units are often supplemented with a mirror film that enhances the effect of thermal insulation

When buying doors with frost-resistant glass, the price of which is quite high, it is necessary to carefully study the technical characteristics of the glass unit.

Double-leaf entrance doors with glass

Double (or double) entrance doors with glass are quite common. They are installed in shops and offices, schools and administrative offices. You can often see such doors in the entrances of apartment buildings and in private mansions. Their widespread use is due to the convenience of the design and the ability to adjust the width of the doorway. One or two leaves can be used if necessary. When there is no need for a wide aisle, one of the canvases is fixed in a fixed position.

When choosing, it is important to correctly assess the quality of the materials from which the canvas is made, as well as the reliability of the accessories - locking device, hinges, latches, etc.

Manufacturing of entrance doors with glass

Immediately it is necessary to make a reservation that it will not be possible to make a high-quality entrance door from glass at home. The key word is "quality". If you wish, of course, you can glue several large sheets of glass into one, but this structure will not have the strength required for the front door.

Another thing is local inserts or partial glazing. Here, no creativity is prohibited. All you need to do is use the correct materials and adhere to certain installation standards when assembling. The simplest scheme for inserting glass into a wooden door is a handicraft way of installing small glass into the canvas. There is nothing difficult in this. The main thing is to get the glass of the right size and quality. For example, you can use hardened side windows ("stalinite") from a car. Since they cannot be cut or drilled, the seat must be prepared according to the available dimensions. The procedure can be schematically described as follows.

  1. A hole of the required size is cut in the canvas. It can be a rectangle, square, or circle. In order to avoid weakening the rigidity of the door leaf, the structure must be reinforced with additional bars or metal plates.
  2. On the inside, glass is installed (or two, glued together with epoxy resin). The frame for the glass is made in advance, the fixation is done with glazing beads. A decorative panel with a hole congruent to the outside is additionally mounted on top of the glass.
  3. The opening cut in the canvas is finished with decorative strips, which are stuffed or glued along the inner perimeter of the window. Otherwise, water will flow into the hole and the ends of the boards will begin to rot.
  4. To ensure that the glass adheres tightly to the sash and does not blow in the wind from under it, a colorless silicone sealant is used. They process the perimeter of the junction of glass to wood.

    A viewing window in a wooden or metal door can be made by yourself

Outside, you can protect the hole with one more glass (ordinary, not hardened). To do this, it is enough to make a frame from wooden slats or aluminum corners, attach it to the outside of the window and insert glass cut to size.

However, according to the deepest conviction of the author of these lines, such experiments can end very badly. There are a lot of real cases when the independent revision of the entrance doors created the prerequisites for their easy breaking. The weakening of the structure, which cannot be assessed visually, is very well felt by "professionals" - people who make a living with a lock pick and a crowbar.

Features of installation and operation of entrance doors with glass

Installation of entrance doors with glass is carried out according to general construction rules.

  1. Preparatory stage. It consists in dismantling the old door, leveling the doorway and delivering the new door to the installation site. The main attention is paid to the preparation of the walls of the opening, since the reliability of the fastening of the door block depends on their condition. The hole in the wall is leveled, freed from the remnants of polyurethane foam, falling off plaster or bricks. Then the inner surface is plastered and left to dry completely. Immediately before installing the door, the surface of the opening is treated with a construction primer such as "Betonkontakt".

    Preparing the doorway
    Preparing the doorway

    It is necessary to prepare and plaster the doorway in advance so that the plaster is completely dry

  2. Door frame installation. The canvas is removed from the door block, and the frame is installed in the opening. Before fixing the box, it is aligned along the vertical axis and the plane of the wall. There are three options:

    • the frame is aligned along the inner plane of the wall;
    • the frame is aligned along the outer surface of the wall;
    • the box is installed at an equal distance from the outer and inner plane of the wall.

      The structure of the doorway
      The structure of the doorway

      Aligning the door leaf along the inner plane of the wall saves on additional costs

  3. Fixing the door frame. It is carried out in two stages, each of which is accompanied by control measurements. First, the frame is secured with spacer wedges made of wood or plastic. After that, the fixation points are marked on the side racks, the threshold and the upper crossbar. GOST 312137-2003 prescribes to place anchor mechanisms (with a diameter of 10 mm and above) on the sidewalls of the door frame at a distance of at least 0.7 m. On horizontal sections, two fixation points are sufficient. To install the anchors, holes are drilled in the frame and in the wall. The anchors are positioned and tightened evenly until little resistance appears. Then the verticality of the installation is checked and only after that the fastening is finally tightened.

    Aligning the door frame
    Aligning the door frame

    The installation of the front door should be carried out by a team of installers of at least two people

  4. Installation of the door leaf. The sash is hinged and closed. Technological clearances along the frame are checked. They should be from 3 to 5 mm (depending on the thickness of the blade) along the entire length of the racks. If the box is installed correctly, the canvas is in a balanced state. In a free position, the sash does not move independently, it can only move under human control.
  5. Sealing gaps. The space between the frame and the walls is filled with polyurethane foam. Polyurethane foam tends to increase in volume by 30–45% during hardening, so it should be applied about a third of the gap. Low expansion foam should be used to install the doors. Moisten the opening before application, this improves adhesion and speeds up drying. Seams must be filled carefully as the foam acts as a thermal and sound barrier. If through holes remain, they are re-filled with foam.
  6. Installation of fittings. If the door leaf needs adjustment and the hinges allow this, the sash position inside the frame is corrected. After that, a lock, a door handle and other components are mounted (door closer, door peephole, latch, etc.).
  7. Facing works. Platbands and slopes are installed. For an entrance door with glass, it is advisable to use cement mortar slopes. This will further strengthen the structure and make the door inaccessible to burglary. The plaster is applied along the beacons, which are set in advance along the perimeter of the door and along the edges of the wall.

    The slopes are finished with cement mortar according to the installed beacons

  8. Slope finishing. At the last stage, the slopes are covered with a thin leveling layer of putty (gypsum, chalk or limestone) and painted. The cladding of slopes with ceramic tiles or natural stone is often practiced.

    Before plastering and plastering of slopes, the door is covered with a protective film

When installing and further operating entrance doors with glass, it is recommended to be careful when handling translucent elements. Although they are not inferior to many other materials in hardness and strength, they have weak points that you need to be aware of.

  1. As we have already noted, the glass is vulnerable at the end. A blow with a metal object, even with a small force, leads to the destruction of the glass structure. Therefore, the ends must be reliably hidden and inaccessible for accidental contact.
  2. Glass is afraid of certain types of acids, in particular, hydrofluoric acid. On contact with the surface, matte patches are formed, which can only be removed by expensive polishing.
  3. Glazing elements must not be exposed to caustic alkaline compounds and abrasive materials. Small strokes and scratches will gradually cause the glass to become opaque.

Repair and adjustment of entrance doors with glass

In all doors, without exception, rubbing parts wear out first. Even if the door fittings are of high quality, and the installation was carried out with knowledge of the matter, there comes a time when the doors need to be repaired and adjusted. Therefore, the farm must have tools with which the doors with glass are serviced. These include:

  • screwdrivers with different slot shapes;
  • files;
  • lubricants;
  • a set of wrenches and hex keys.

    Before starting maintenance work on the door, you must stock up on a silicone seal, lubricant and a set of keys

Repair, adjustment and replacement of hinges

The hinges are one of the most important parts of the door unit. They are the ones that carry dynamic loads during daily operation. On average, high quality cast metal hinges are rated for 500,000 open and close cycles. If a family living in a house consists of 4–5 people and each family member leaves and enters the house once, the door will be opened 10 times a day on average. Divide 500 thousand by 10 times a day and 365 days a year. We get 137 years of service! The figure is reassuring, but you need to understand that suspensions require regular maintenance.

Standard maintenance procedures include lubricating and adjusting door hinges. Lubrication is carried out with a universal WD-40 agent or spindle oil. But some hinges need a heavier material - grease or graphite lubricant. Much depends on the suspension design.

Front door hinge lubrication

Standard doors are conveniently lubricated with WD-40 spray

Adjustment can only be made on hinges with a special mechanism. To do this, use hex keys and a diagram of adjusting screws attached to the hinge passport.

Loop adjustment scheme
Loop adjustment scheme

Adjustment is made in three directions: in width, in height and in depth of contact (clamp)

A signal that an adjustment is needed is a change in the position of the blade, which begins to emit extraneous sounds (creaks, friction and a metallic grinding), as well as difficulties in the operation of the lock. In advanced cases, when the door is operated, despite the malfunctions, the silicone seal suffers greatly. As a result, it will have to be replaced.

Replacement of hinges is necessary when metal parts wear out that cannot be restored. The replacement algorithm looks like this.

  1. Dismantling the door leaf. The canvas is removed from the canopies, freeing up access to the hinge fastening.
  2. Detachment of the hinges from the door frame and door leaf.
  3. Installation of new hinges. Returning the blade to its place and adjusting its position inside the frame.

Dismantling and replacing the lock

The correct operation of the locking device in doors with glass is of great importance, while malfunctions are fraught with troubles. If the lock is jammed at a time when no one is at home, the owners simply will not be able to get inside. In such cases, you have to call a team of locksmiths, who have the right to open the door only in the presence of a local police officer. In short, this is a whole story that will keep residents on the street for a long time. Such incidents are far from uncommon. And the cost of door opening services is considerable - from 5 to 15 thousand rubles, so the failure of the lock will take a lot of time and nerves.

Therefore, at the very first signs of a breakdown of the lock, it is necessary to call a master or independently diagnose and repair. The simplest and most reliable in this situation is to install a new lock. For this, the damaged lock is removed from the canvas. The fixing screws are located at the end of the door leaf, opposite the striker. Next, you need to choose a new lock that fits the size of the seat. Installation is carried out in the reverse order.

Removing the door lock
Removing the door lock

Dismantling the lock begins with unscrewing the screws at the end of the blade

If the locking device is equipped with additional crossbars, during assembly it is necessary to connect the lock drive to the lever that controls their movement.

Replacing the door handle

Operating a door without a handle is extremely problematic, especially when the handle is associated with a lock and latch. The rotary knob may become unusable due to poor quality materials, assembly errors, or malfunctions. Be that as it may, the damaged handle needs to be either repaired or replaced. Since there are a lot of door handle designs, it is difficult to give specific recommendations. But there is advice of a universal nature.

Removing the door handle
Removing the door handle

Door handle device includes pivot levers, latch and locking mechanism

Before proceeding with the repair, it is necessary to carefully study the device and the order of assembly of the product, given in the technical passport

Here we will indicate the main symptoms that precede the malfunctions:

  • the handle stroke (if it is a rotary model) has ceased to be uniform, gaps have formed;
  • idling appeared (when the handle is already in motion, and the door does not open at the same time), which indicates that there is excessive play in the drive mechanism;
  • the tongue of the latch is not fully extended or gets stuck inside the doors, which indicates a failure of the spring.

If the lock and hinges are subject to periodic lubrication, then the doorknob is oiled only during installation. There are no parts in its design that need to be coated with lubricants.

Replacement is carried out in a standard manner. First, the old handle is disassembled, after that a new one is mounted. Expensive handles with countersunk fixing come with special keys, as a rule, hexagons or small-diameter stars (1.5-2 mm).

Caring for entrance doors with glass

During operation, doors are exposed to a variety of adverse factors. These are solar radiation, temperature changes, changes in the level of humidity. In addition, precipitation, dust vortices, carbon monoxide from the exhaust of city cars, etc. act on the front door with glass. At regular intervals, you need to wash and clean the door from extraneous layers and dirt. The external parts are especially affected - the door closer, the outer part of the handle, lock and glass surfaces. To increase the service life of the door, it is recommended to carry out the following measures.

  1. Grease the rubbing parts of the hinges and the lock at least once a year. It should be borne in mind that oil should not be applied outside. Dust will quickly adhere to it and this will lead to a malfunction of the mechanism.
  2. Clean the door surface from dirt and dust once a month. Wash glass areas and the space under the silicone seal especially carefully. In this case, it is necessary to use glass detergents. Do not use scrapers, hard brushes, etc. It is strictly forbidden to use solvents based on acetone or gasoline.

    To clean the glass entrance doors from dust, you need to use special detergents for washing glass

  3. When lubricating mechanisms, do not leave oil drips. They can damage the outer finish of the door and leave stubborn stains behind. If a drip is still formed, you need to quickly wash it off with a mild soapy solution and wipe it dry.

Accessories for entrance doors with glass

Hardware for entrance doors is characterized by common properties that are necessary during operation - reliability and durability.

Hinges

The most important element of the door suspension. It is no exaggeration to note that the higher the quality of the door hinges, the longer the service life of the door, especially if the entrance doors are equipped with glass, which means that they have a weight above average. It is customary to equip entrance doors with hidden hinges, which have a complex design and regulation function.

Concealed door hinges

Access to the hidden hinge mechanism is only available when the doors are open

The suspensions are located inside the holes in the frame or canvas. Special cutters are used to sample the cavity. The number of hinges can vary from two to three, depending on the size and weight of the door leaf.

When choosing hinges, you should listen to the manufacturer's opinion. Before entering the public sale, any doors are tested for strength (crash test), fire resistance, heat resistance, etc. During the tests, the technical parameters of all parts, including hinges, are determined.

Lock

The main requirements for the lock are the complexity of forced opening and the reliability of the locking mechanism. Today, experts consider the most reliable leveler locks with eurocylinders. The prices are above average, but home security is worth it.

For all its simplicity, the doorknob is considered an important door control element. Therefore, you should not dismiss her. In addition to convenience and appearance, the handle must be reliable and durable, for this it must be made of high-quality metal. According to experts, the door closer extends the service life of the door by 5-6 times. This is a very good indicator. The essence of the device is that a powerful steel spring gently returns the door leaf to its original position. By adjusting and adjusting the stroke of the drive lever, they ensure that the door does not slam, but closes smoothly and softly.

The adjustable door closer is selected according to the dimensions and weight of the door leaf

The choice of a closer is carried out according to two parameters:

  • by the size of the door leaf;
  • by its weight.

You can install it yourself. The kit includes a mounting template and adjustment instructions. The payback period for the closer is six months.

Espagnolette

The espagnolette is a locking device that fixes the door leaf in a certain position. The device is relevant for double-leaf doors.

The choice is made based on the material of the door leaf and the design of the door frame. For example, mortise latches are used for plastic and wooden doors. For metal and glass - overhead. The selection is also carried out according to functional parameters. There are latches with different locking pin lengths, automatic and semi-automatic, right and left models, etc.
