Composition and release form of the drug Milbemax

Milbemax is one of the most common medicines for treating worms in cats. The drug is produced in the form of tablets. It contains many different components, but in addition to the two main active substances, milbemycin oxime and praziquantel, the rest only help to deliver them to the intestines, and then into the blood. The following are used as auxiliary ingredients:

  • microcrystalline cellulose;
  • sodium carmellose;
  • povidone;
  • lactose;
  • colloidal silicon;
  • magnesium stearate;
  • hypromellose;
  • macrogol;
  • talc;
  • food supplement with beef flavor "Artificial beef flavor".

Milbemax is available in two different formats:

  • for kittens and young cats weighing up to 2 kg (1 tablet contains 4 mg of milbemycin oxime and 10 mg of praziquantel);

    Milbemax can be used in kittens from 6 weeks of age

  • for adult cats (16 and 40 mg, respectively).

Mechanism of action

When the drug enters the intestines, it is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream and immediately begins its effect. Molecules of the previously mentioned active substances increase the permeability of the parasite's cell membrane to calcium and chlorine ions, causing paralysis and death. Also, these substances destroy the outer cover of helminths, which protects them from the effects of intestinal enzymes. In a maximum of 13 hours, all worms will leave the cat's body along with feces and urine. It should also be noted that this drug has no cumulative effect and is not addictive.
