Old witch syndrome: what is sleep paralysis?

Those who have experienced sleep paralysis at least once in their life can confirm that this is one of the most terrible conditions. But many argue that it is in it that you can achieve extraordinary success in such unusual things as out-of-body travel and lucid dreaming. Therefore, daredevils are looking for a way that will artificially introduce themselves into sleep paralysis.

What is sleep paralysis

Imagine - you wake up in your bed, but you cannot even move a finger. Your eyes are open, you see your room, but eerie black shadows rush around it. You clearly sense the presence of something sinister. You experience the deepest horror, as in the worst nightmare. But with all this, you realize that you are not sleeping. This is sleep paralysis, or the syndrome of the old witch, as it is also called.

I have experienced sleep paralysis twice - both times after waking up from a nightmare. I could clearly hear my own scream in my ears, but in fact I couldn't even open my mouth. The paralysis disappeared in a few minutes, but the "aftertaste" from it spoiled the mood for the whole day …

How does it appear? Now scientists have already solved the mystery of sleep paralysis. During the REM phase (REM sleep), our brain temporarily and partially turns off motor functions so that we lie still, even if we dream that we are running fast. Upon awakening, the mobility of the body returns again. But sometimes failures occur - the brain either turns off the movement too early, or "forgets" to turn it on when we are already awake. This is what causes paralysis.

But what, then, causes the sinister visions and the feeling of terror? There is no exact answer to this question yet. However, many superstitious tribes and religious societies are convinced that hordes of demons attack a person during sleep paralysis. And they can be understood - after all, a person who has experienced sleep paralysis can be completely sure of the confusion of evil supernatural forces - this state is so terrifying.

Is sleep paralysis dangerous?

Yes and no. In this state, demons and demons do not attack you, do not strangle or run around your room. Therefore, from a "supernatural" point of view, you are safe. However, sleep paralysis can cause depression, sleep disturbances, and awaken phobias. For impressionable and emotional natures, it can become one of the causes of some psychological disorders. Therefore, it is not specifically recommended to call it - after all, there is nothing pleasant in these sensations.

It is not recommended to induce sleep paralysis on your own - it does not bring any good consequences or positive experience

Is it possible to cause sleep paralysis on your own

Scientists name many possible causes of sleep paralysis. This is depression, disturbed sleep patterns, and an uncomfortable position of the body … But all these are just concomitant factors that will not allow us to "manually" induce sleep paralysis. There is a method that will greatly increase the likelihood of this condition:

  1. Go to bed in the evening as usual, but set the alarm for 4 hours after starting to sleep.
  2. When you wake up in the middle of the night, do something for 15-20 minutes so that your brain finally wakes up - for example, read.
  3. Then go back to bed, relax and close your eyes.
  4. Try to stay awake as long as possible - for this you can focus your thoughts on a particular subject. The practice of meditation can help you with this.
  5. You may find yourself in sleep paralysis when you fall asleep.

This method doesn't always work, so don't be discouraged if you fail the first time. Maybe it's for the best.

Sleep paralysis stories

Sleep paralysis is a terrible, but attractive condition for many. And yet, despite the natural interest in such terrible things, we recommend that you refrain from curiosity and do not try to provoke it yourself.
