Tom yam soup can be made at home, it only takes a little time and a small set of special ingredients, some of which can be replaced with familiar products.

Classic Tom Yum soup with shrimps and coconut milk

The classic tom yam is prepared using both herbal broth and chicken broth. But in the second version, the soup turns out to be more intense and has a rich taste and aroma. But coconut milk is an indispensable ingredient; without it, the dish will not have a wonderful creamy note.

Ingredients for the classic tom yum soup:

  • 2.5 liters of chicken broth;
  • 300-400 g of king prawns;
  • 3-4 leaves of kaffir lime;
  • 3-4 cloves of garlic;
  • 20 g galangal root;
  • 2-3 stems of lemongrass (lemon grass);
  • 1 tbsp. l. pastas for soup tom yam;
  • 1 tomato;
  • 3-4 shiitake mushrooms or 15 g dried;
  • 200 ml coconut milk;
  • 1 tsp fish sauce;
  • salt to taste.

The recipe for the classic tom yum soup:

  1. The galangal root should be cut into small pieces. Chop the kaffir lime leaves and lemongrass. Coarsely chop the garlic. Toss the vegetable set in the broth and cook for 20 minutes.

  2. Cut the mushrooms into small cubes. If the shiitake is dry, first soak it in water for 30 minutes.

  3. Chop the ripe tomato into large cubes. Add to the broth along with the mushrooms. Take out large pieces of lemon grass and kaffir lime.

  4. Peel the king prawns, leaving the tail. Immerse in soup and simmer for 5 minutes over low heat.

Foods that can replace some soup ingredients

Now in almost every store you can find packages with a set of greens and vegetables intended for making tom yam soup. Large department stores often sell both fish sauce and tom yam pasta. If you didn’t find some of the ingredients, but you want to cook a fragrant exotic soup, you can cheat and replace the products with more affordable ones.

Replacement options:

  • The fish sauce gives the tom yam soup incredible flavor and is difficult to duplicate with conventional foods. But if you still have to replace it, then only with soy. The rest of the options distort the taste of the dish;
  • canned or fresh coconut milk is easily replaced with powdered milk mixed with regular cow's milk in equal proportions;
  • Tom Yam paste is very difficult to replace, too exotic products are used for it. They give an unforgettable taste and smell to the finished dish. You can replace the paste only with a dry powder from the same spices and herbs;
  • kaffir lime can be replaced with the same amount of fresh lime zest;
  • instead of galangal root, ginger root is suitable;
  • Shiitake mushrooms easily change for oyster mushrooms or even champignons (in extreme cases).

In addition to shrimp, chicken is also used to make tom yam soup. In this case, it is better to add cherry tomatoes to the dish, as they give the soup a sweetish taste.

Products for Tom Yum Chicken Soup:

  • 300 g chicken fillet;
  • 300 g of chicken bones;
  • 2 liters of water;
  • 200 g of mushrooms (oyster mushrooms or champignons);
  • 2 pcs. shallots;
  • 1/2 red hot pepper without seeds;
  • 6 cherry tomatoes;
  • 3-4 leaves of kaffir lime;
  • 20 g lemon grass;
  • 20 g galangal root;
  • 100 ml coconut milk;
  • 1 tsp tom yam paste;
  • 1 tsp fish sauce;
  • greens for serving;
  • salt to taste.

Recipe:

  1. Boil chicken bone broth.

  2. Remove the bones from the finished broth and dip the galangal root, shallots cut into rings, lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves into it. Boil them over low heat for half an hour, and then remove with a slotted spoon and strain the broth.

    The herbs and shallots boiled in the broth should be thrown away, because they have already given all their spicy juices to the broth.

  3. Cut the chicken fillet into medium-sized pieces. Dip in broth and cook for 15 minutes over low heat. Remove foam with a slotted spoon.

  4. Chop oyster mushrooms.

  5. Cut the cherry tomatoes into quarters. Add mushrooms and tomatoes to the broth with chicken fillet. Add red hot peppers, cut into thin rings. Boil for another 10 minutes.

  6. Add tom yam pasta and fish sauce to the soup and stir. Try and add salt if necessary. Heat coconut milk in the microwave.

  7. Add it to the simmering soup and immediately heat to low. After a minute turn off and cover with a lid. Let stand for 10 minutes and serve on bowls.
