3 Breathing Mistakes That Lead to Poor Posture
The musculoskeletal system is inextricably linked with the respiratory organs: an even posture provides comfortable air access, and correct breathing affects the state of the spine. This is why it is so important to have an idea of what his correct technique is.
Impaired mobility of the thoracic spine
The most favorable effect on the posture is the mixed type of breathing, in which the chest is involved with the use of the auxiliary muscles of the abdominal cavity. However, most people are used to breathing from the stomach or only from the chest, which leads to impaired motor support.
The diaphragm, which is used in this process, is only an auxiliary respiratory organ, and the transfer of the entire load to it inevitably leads to an increase in the stoop. This distortion of the spine is often referred to as head-forward posture. The shoulders and neck begin to protrude unnaturally, thoracic kyphosis, that is, curvature, increases.
Strong deflection in the lower back
People who use only the chest to breathe tend to strain it too much. This increases the tension of the muscles that are responsible for straightening the spine. In this case, the pelvic floor is weakened, and the lumbar spine is unstable. All this leads to the appearance of an unnatural deflection in the lower back and significantly affects the condition of the spine.
Weak pelvic floor muscles can provoke the appearance of dysfunctions of the organs of the genitourinary system and the abdominal cavity.
Shoulder pulling
For the breathing process to be complete, a relaxed position of the shoulders is important. If you pull and lift them up while inhaling with your stomach, you can get a distortion of the mechanics of the movement of the shoulder blades and directly the shoulders themselves. At the same time, the neck muscles are constrained, the chest does not expand properly, but, on the contrary, lengthens, while the body does not receive the required amount of oxygen.
Such breathing is quite difficult, unproductive and dangerous. The risk of damage to internal organs, heart disease, or poor circulation is increased. Irritability, constant fatigue and anxiety appear. Deterioration of blood flow leads to problems with the brain: a person loses efficiency, becomes distracted and forgetful.
If you are already accustomed to using only the chest or abdomen while breathing, do not be discouraged: regular breathing exercises will definitely lead to the desired result.
