From Khrushchev to Gorbachev: what the wives of the top officials of the state looked like

In the Soviet Union, the wives of the first persons of the state practically did not participate in political activities and rarely accompanied their spouses on foreign trips. And their appearance could be judged by the very rare photographs that sometimes appeared in the media.

She was the first "Kremlin wife" who began to accompany her husband on official foreign visits. Naturally, there was a special interest in her. But she never betrayed her principles, did not try to turn into a beautifully discharged doll for the sake of other people's traditions.

But this woman had an excellent education and spoke several foreign languages. And she could easily afford not only the most expensive clothes, but also jewelry. However, she always preferred to wear solid, but modest and even somewhat simple clothes. And she did not give up her habits while abroad.

Victoria Brezhneva

Victoria Brezhneva wore classic dresses made from solid fabric of soft shades. In those days, it was indecent to bare shoulders and therefore, even on summer models, at least a very small sleeve was always present. The jackets were loose fit or slightly fitted. Victoria practically did not use accessories.

Tailors complained that Victoria Brezhneva never showed interest in outfits. And during receptions, the guards often had to tactfully tell the guests who the "first lady" was.

Raisa Gorbacheva

Raisa Gorbacheva knew how to be refined, elegant and strict. She had a well-developed sense of style and excellent taste. Her outfits often drew criticism from compatriots. In those days, there was a shortage of goods in the country. And ordinary women believed that Gorbacheva acquired her dresses and suits abroad, using a privileged position.

Gorbacheva preferred light-colored two-piece suits, silk blouses with bows at the neck. This woman knew how to wear fur products and unusual hats with style. She was not afraid of experiments and often dictated fashion trends to women.
