How to deal with a moth in the garden? Effective ways

As soon as our garden trees begin to bear fruit, we are faced with a new problem - the harmful effects of the moth, which can ruin most of the harvest. This insect gnaws a hole in the fruit and digs holes, leaving excrement and cobweb threads in the pulp. And if you don't want your entire crop to rot on the ground, moth control should be your top priority this summer.

Folk remedies

The fight against the moth has been going on for centuries. It will not be possible to completely lime it, but we can significantly reduce the population, and thereby save the harvest. First of all, you can use grandmother's funds for this.

Signs of damage to the apple moth

  1. Constantly get rid of damaged, rotten parts of the tree: it is in such areas that the moth lives and hibernates. It is better to burn these branches.
  2. Collect fallen affected fruits every night. If you do not plan to use carrion, then bury it half a meter deep, preferably away from your site. Never throw such fruits into the compost pit!
  3. Beginning in May, install the so-called trapping belts. This can be a sheet of corrugated paper that needs to be fixed on a tree trunk at a height of 30 cm from the ground, tied with a rope. Remove the belt every week and remove the stuck tracks, then reinstall.
  4. By the end of autumn, clean out any trees that have been infected. Spread a canvas under the tree and scrape off the caterpillars with a stiff brush, starting from a height of about 50 cm. After cleaning is finished, whitewash the trunks of fruit trees.
  5. Apply camphor alcohol. Saturate about 10 pieces of cloth or cotton wool with it and hang over the crown. The procedure must be repeated every week as the alcohol evaporates. You can stop processing a month before harvest.
  6. Hot water treatment of trees also shows good results. The temperature should be no more than 60 degrees so as not to damage the leaves and fruits. Spray it with a spray bottle, the caterpillars drop dead as soon as hot water hits them.

Using folk remedies is quite time consuming, and if you have a large garden, then these methods are unlikely to suit you. It is better to use chemicals for processing.

Some more grandma's tips

Sometimes completely unexpected means can help us in the fight against these harmful insects, which, nevertheless, will most likely be at hand.

  1. Hang jars of kvass on the branches of fruit trees. This is a very effective remedy: butterflies flock to kvass and, naturally, die.
  2. Use the recipe for fermenting bait: take 600-700 g of apple carrion or dried fruit, pour 2 liters of water and boil for 30 minutes. Add 0.5 l of whey, the same amount of bread kvass, 250 g of sugar and 20 g of yeast. Leave in a warm place until the liquid ferments. Fill 1/3 liter jars with it and hang in the crowns of trees.
  3. Another recipe: put in a three-liter jar 200 g of rye crusts a few lumps of sugar and yeast, cover with water, cover with gauze and leave in a warm place for 2 days. Drain the liquid, add bread and sugar to the sediment, refill with water. After fermentation, dilute the thick with water and use as bait.

Tomatoes next to fruit trees will help prevent moth development in your area.

Do not forget that the apple and plum moth are nocturnal insects. To keep the trap jars out of the daytime insects that may be useful to your garden, hang traps in the evenings. In the morning, you need to remove the cans, take out the insects that have got inside and store the mixture until the evening in a closed container in a cool place.

Pest control chemicals

It is worth noting that both the apple and plum moths lead an identical lifestyle, therefore, to combat them, you can easily use the same means, both folk and industrial.

In early summer, from May to July, hang pheromone traps on trees, which can be purchased from hardware or specialty stores. These traps contain an attractant that attracts male moths. The male population is sharply declining, and unfertilized females will not be able to bear offspring.

If you find a strong infection of trees by the moth, from June to the beginning of September, sprays weekly with a viral drug that causes granulosis in caterpillars. This substance will not harm other insects, as well as animals and birds.

During the same period, if the air temperature rises above 20 degrees, use bacterial insecticides, for example, Bacillus thuringiensis, to control the moth. Be sure to control the appearance of caterpillars: only for 4 days after it will this remedy have an effect.

Spraying with special chemicals will save you from pests

Here are a few more chemicals that have worked well for spraying:

  • karbofos - 90 g per 10 liters of water;
  • inta-vir - 1 tablet per 10 liters of water;
  • fitoverm - 2 ml per 10 liters of water;
  • lepidocid - 30 g per 10 liters of water.

Trees need to be treated with these means in 10-14 days.

It is timely processing and careful care that will help you get rid of the invasion of pests until they have infected the entire garden.
