Why is it so difficult to clean the gas stove grate
It is this part of the plate that suffers from dirt the most. The grates are very inconvenient to clean, so many housewives leave this activity “for later”. And the dirt keeps growing and growing, until we are faced with the fact that its removal already seems almost impossible.
The first thing that settles on the bars is the fat from the dishes being cooked. It doesn't matter if you fry cutlets or cook soup with meat broth. Grease splashes from the frying pan. Fat splashes out of the pan along with boiling water. And if it is easy enough to erase this disgrace from the flat surface of the stove, then cleaning the grate is not such an easy task.
Compare how the bars of a clean and dirty grate look
Getting on the parts of the stove together with water, the fat literally sticks tightly, clinging to the metal after the moisture evaporates. On it, in turn, dust settles. And if you have a cat at home that loves to walk on tables, then you will quickly notice on the stove and his fur adhering to the grease-covered grates. Agree, an unpleasant sight …
Under the influence of high temperatures during cooking, the fat settled on the grates with dust and food debris begins to turn into carbon deposits - a tough, ingrained crust. It can corrode over time if you don't take the necessary measures
To clean contaminated screens, you can use various agents containing alkalis, acids and abrasive particles. All of them can help you, but the ease of cleaning with them depends on the level of contamination. For example, if you are going to remove a large amount of old fat with carbon deposits using abrasives (river sand, cleaning powder, soda), you will have to soak the grate for a long time before using them. Otherwise, you run the risk of painfully scrubbing the rods without much result.
Alkaline and especially acidic chemicals are excellent at removing grease, carbon deposits and other impurities. But because of the active effect on the metal surface and the pungent smell, it is better to use them only in case of emergency, when the dirt really looks invincible.
Versatile ways to clean grease and carbon deposits
For the manufacture of gas stove grates, the following are traditionally used:
- cast iron;
- stainless steel;
- enameled steel.
There are several versatile and safe methods that can clean any of these materials.
The first folk remedy is soda
One of them is the use of baking soda. Moisten the product a little with water until a gruel forms and coat the grate with it on all sides. Leave to lie down for about an hour so that the soda has time to dissolve the layer of dirt, then wipe it thoroughly first with a stiff brush and then with a sponge. The grill will become clean and shiny.
Regular baking soda is a versatile cleaner for gas stove grates
Boiling water
Preheat the oven to the highest temperature. Pour water into a deep baking sheet so that it completely covers the wire rack placed on it. Place the baking sheet in the oven and wait. The water, heating up, will soften the burnt fat: it will simply lag behind the rods. After that, it will be enough to wipe the grate with a wet cloth, if necessary, lightly walk with a scraper or a hard sponge.
Steam
For quick, gentle cleaning without the use of chemicals, and moreover not requiring special efforts, you can use a portable steam generator with a nozzle in the form of a round hard brush. A jet of hot steam perfectly softens greasy dirt, and the brush removes them from the surface.
A steam generator with a special nozzle will help you remove stubborn grease
Mustard
Mustard powder can also be used to dissolve fat.
- Wet the wire rack.
- Apply a paste made from mustard powder and a little hot water to it.
- Leave on for 2 hours.
- Rub with a hard sponge and rinse.
The property of mustard to break down fat has long been known, therefore it is successfully used as a cleaning and disinfectant
We take into account the material
Now we will look at the most suitable cleaning methods for each type of grid separately. It is important to know what material the grate on your stove is made of, because the choice of how to care for it can directly depend on this.
Cast iron alloy
Cast iron as a material is not very easy to clean. For example, do not put a heavy and bulky cast iron rack in the dishwasher. You can try to simply scrape off the dirt with a knife or a hard brush, but this is long and difficult, and besides, scratches that are unpleasant to the eye can form on the surface.
Cast iron grates are not dishwasher safe
Calcination
The most effective is the calcination of a cast-iron grate over an open fire. It is best to do this in the country or in the yard with the help of a lit fire or blowtorch. But you can ignite it at home, right above the gas stove.
- When burnt, dried fat with dirt will emit a strong odor, so first open the windows and doors wide open and turn on the hood.
- Place the wire rack over the lit gas hob.
- Rotate it from time to time so that all the ribs can act with fire.
- Hold until all the grease and dirt has burned out.
- After baking, wipe the cooled grate with a wet cloth and dry.
A variant of this method is sand calcination.
- Place the wire rack on a large baking sheet (don't mind) or a sheet of metal.
- Cover it with sand and put it on the fire. After a few hours, the greasy dirt will burn out.
- Rinse the wire rack with water and dry.
River coarse sand is the most affordable abrasive cleaning agent for gratings
Mechanical removal of dirt
Another very effective method, although more expensive. Craftsmen have figured out how to greatly facilitate this process and do without tedious scraping.
- Buy an attachment in the form of a not very hard metal brush for a drill or grinder from a hardware store.
- Install, turn on the device and drive it along the grate in a circular forward motion.
This automated cleaning shows brilliant results. In addition, this method is good if the grill is non-removable or non-separable, designed for 4 burners.
Stainless and enamelled steel
Cleaning of steel gratings from solidified grease and associated contamination can be carried out both directly on the stove and in the bathroom. For stainless steel, you can use any aggressive detergents, including abrasive ones. But enamel requires a more careful attitude. It is not recommended to scrape such a grid with a metal scraper and even more so with a knife: enameled surfaces are prone to scratches and chips.
You cannot clean the enamel with a knife or a hard metal brush set on a drill: the risk of chipping and scratching, which will later become covered with rust, is very high
Chemicals
Gels marked "Anti-grease" are best suited for steel gratings.
- Apply a generous layer of this substance evenly to the grill surface.
- Withstand the exposure time indicated in the instructions.
- If necessary, scrub the grate with a sponge and then rinse under running water.
The steel grate is highly resistant to aggressive chemicals
Vinegar
You can also dissolve fat with vinegar:
- Take out a deep baking sheet to an open balcony or yard.
- Place a wire rack in it and cover with vinegar.
- Leave it on for a few hours.
- When all the grease has dissolved, wipe off the remaining dirt with a cloth.
Concentrated acetic acid must be diluted with water according to the instructions on the label
Soap solution
The classic way, simple and affordable, but it takes the most time and effort.
- In a large basin or other container with a suitable volume, prepare a strong soapy solution using shavings of laundry soap or any strong dishwashing detergent. You need to take hot water.
- Place your wire rack in this solution and let it soak overnight.
- In the morning, you can easily wipe off dirt with an iron scraper or a hard sponge.
Soak a steel wire rack in a saturated soapy solution for at least 12 hours, and then you can easily wipe off burnt fat
Melamine sponge
Relatively recently on sale, melamine sponges have already become popular among housewives due to the fact that they easily and carefully deal with most of the dirt. You need to use this miracle remedy in this way:
- Dampen a sponge with water.
- Rub the dirt on the grate bars.
- Remove foam with a dry cloth.
The substances that make up the melamine sponge are great for removing any dirt
Dishwasher safe
This method is simple and ideal for enamel. Just remember to remove all plastic and rubber parts, if any, from the grill before loading into it. And add more detergent than usual, especially in the case of sufficiently strong and persistent dirt.
Soda ash with the addition of silicate glue and washing powder will help you avoid heavy dirt on the grate
