How to choose a good blender for your home
The technique can be divided into two groups: larger stationary blenders and portable submersibles. Of course, representatives of each of them will have their own differences, which means that it is important to know about the main ones before buying.
Stationary models
Stationary blenders are used for making mashed potatoes, cocktails, minced meat
The main component of stationary models, which distinguishes them from submersible versions, is a fairly spacious bowl with sharp knives at the bottom. European housewives call such a device a shaker (mainly used for making cocktails), but we have more stuck with the definition of "blender", which is not surprising, given the main functions of such an assistant.
In comparison with submersible models, stationary ones have several undeniable advantages. For example, you do not have to exert any physical effort to hold the blender, you just need to press a button and wait a little, which is especially valuable for a large volume of work. In addition, many modern versions of such equipment already have a self-cleaning function (to rinse the blender, you just need to pour warm water into the bowl and turn on the device in standard operating mode). As for the main disadvantages, they include the large size and the problematic chopping of vegetables, which almost immediately take the form of mashed potatoes.
In order not to be mistaken in choosing your "kitchen assistant", it is important to consider the following features when buying:
- The power of the device is the first thing you should pay attention to. Most bench blenders are rated at 500-900 watts, but some are rated at 1,200-1,500 watts. Of course, the more power, the more functions the device will have (for example, it will be able to easily grind ice, nuts or whip dough), but at the same time its cost and noise level will be much higher. A blender with a power of 600 W is enough for cooking soft food.
- Knives and their number. After the motor, they are considered the most important parts of the device, and in stationary models there may be one or two. In the latter case, the grinding process will be faster, but if the knives are also curved, then all the chopped products will mix much more evenly. It is better if these parts are large and made of sturdy stainless steel.
- Bowl material. The glass container is easier to clean, does not absorb odors and does not lose its appearance, but with all these advantages, it can break, and it can be quite difficult to replace it. It is also worth remembering that hot water or hot food should not be poured into the plastic bowl, as it may crack.
- The volume of the bowl. Most often on sale you can find specimens with a container volume for products of 0.4-2.0 liters, which fully satisfies the needs of both a small and a fairly large family (do not forget that the bowl of the appliance should not be full to the brim, so always consider stock of about 0.2 l).
- Engine compartment. Be sure to pay attention to the width and weight of the motor unit, because when processing a large amount of solid products, a light device will be less stable than a heavy one. In particular, this indicator also depends on the material of manufacture of the motor housing, and steel products also have better impact resistance. It is good if the selected blender has rubber feet or pads.
- Knife speed is another selection criterion. Stationary models produced today usually have from one to thirty speed modes, although 4-6 speeds are quite enough for most culinary tasks.
- Control Panel. A device with touch buttons is easier to clean, but such a model costs a little more than the usual one, and the standard push buttons are more familiar.
- Additional features. It is good if the selected blender has a spout or tap for directly pouring liquid from the bowl, an overheat shutdown system and a self-cleaning function.
From the foregoing, we can conclude that the main indicators of the quality of the selected stationary blender will be the strength of the material of manufacture and power, although even here a product with average indicators will be quite enough, especially if you do not plan to use it too often.
Decide what functions the blender should perform
Submersible devices
The material of manufacture of the device and its functionality are no less important when buying a hand blender, however, the main criteria here will still be power and speed. The higher these characteristics, the faster the tool will cope with the task of grinding products assigned to it. True, one cannot ignore such a feature as the length of the wire of the selected model, moreover, sometimes this very criterion should be brought to the fore. Let's take a closer look at all the important characteristics:
- Power. Most often, this indicator in modern models ranges from 140 to 1200 watts. Devices up to 250 W are considered low-power and can only handle soft products like tomatoes or bananas. With a hand blender from 250 to 600 W, you can grind meat and frozen vegetables, but appliances with a power of 650 to 1000 W can cope with solid foods: nuts, coffee and even ice. Blenders with a power of more than 1000 W are used for kneading dough, and these models are equipped with the corresponding attachments.
- Number of attachments. Today, even the most basic appliances come with several types of attachments to suit a wide variety of culinary needs. In addition to the immersion part with a knife, the blender usually comes with a whisk for whipping, a mini-mill (a small cup with a knife used to grind coffee beans or cereals), a chopping bowl (presented in the form of a glass with a lid and knives), etc. Of course, if you already have a mixer or food processor, then many of these extras will be redundant.
- Speed switch. Standard models of hand blenders usually have from 2 to 24 speeds, but 5-7 are considered optimal, which will be quite enough for solving common kitchen tasks. To provide yourself with the convenience of switching, it is better to choose options with a special smooth regulator, since in the impulse versions, the speed of rotation of the knives directly depends on the force of action on the button, which is not very convenient in operation. In the presence of the "turbo" mode, it is possible to immediately switch to the maximum speed by pressing just one button. True, many housewives consider such an option useless, since the desired result can be achieved by ordinary switching of the regulator.
- The weight of the device and the noise level during operation. The hand blender has to be held in hand, so the question of its weight is quite relevant. Choose relatively lightweight models that will be as comfortable to use as possible, and to make sure they do not create a lot of sound voltage, ask the seller to turn on the device in the store.
- Additional accessories. Each manufacturer decides for himself what pleasant little things to add to his creation, however, in the standard version, the blender often comes with a stand for nozzles and the blender handle itself (preferably steel), fasteners for fixing on the wall, a measuring cup and a rubberized handle that allows you to firmly hold the device in hand.
- The length of the wire for powering the device from the network. Given the fact that you have to hold it in your hand when using a hand blender, the length of the cord is quite an important selection criterion. Even if it seems long to you, it can be shortened with the help of the included fasteners, and some blender models even have a special button, pressing which allows you to hide the cord in the handle of the appliance.

Stationary or submersible - which blender is better to choose
Undoubtedly, each of the above types of blenders has its own advantages and disadvantages, but in order to decide on a purchase, first figure out what exactly and how often you are going to use the device. For example, the advantages of submersible models are mobility, compactness, the ability to efficiently grind even small portions of products by changing the position of the knife at your discretion.
With a sufficient number of attachments, just one appliance can immediately replace a coffee grinder, food processor, mixer, meat grinder and mashed potatoes. However, such an assistant also has some weaknesses: you will have to constantly hold it in your hand, and careless use will lead to splashing the contents of the container.
The blender solves a considerable number of tasks in the kitchen, which will save the hostess time
Submersible models of blenders should be chosen by people who are accustomed to preparing cocktails and soups from soft products (boiled vegetables, soft fruits and berries), young mothers who often have to cook small portions of food for children, as well as those for whom the limited space of the kitchen cannot accommodate dimensional stationary blender.
Of course, the latter also have many advantages, including almost complete working independence, the ability to cook food and drinks for several people at once, low cost (when compared with submersible models with a similar set of capabilities), the presence of a self-cleaning function that greatly facilitates the process of caring for equipment.
A stationary appliance will become an indispensable attribute in the kitchen of those people who regularly prepare smoothies and cocktails in large quantities, or follow the rules of a healthy diet, constantly preparing pasty vegetable soups or other similar dishes. Simple chopping of vegetables and fruits is almost ideal for this technique.
Thus, having understood all the nuances of the operation of stationary and submersible models of blenders, you can easily choose the most suitable option for yourself, especially since in both cases there are many of them on the domestic market.
