What is a magnetic brush

The device is designed for simultaneous washing of windows from both sides, while inside the room. The principle of operation is similar to the work of "windshield wipers" of a car - pressing tightly against the glass, the brush drives away water with dust and softened dirt.

Device and equipment

The magnetic brush consists of two almost identical halves - separate brushes, inside of which are installed opposite-pole magnets, which ensure fixation of the device on opposite sides of the glass unit. Thanks to this design solution, the outer brush repeats the movements of the inner one and washes the window from the street side without human intervention.

The magnetic brush is small

The working side of each brush is equipped with:

  • removable nozzles for cleaning (foam rubber, non-woven materials), spare parts for materials are usually included in the kit;
  • a scraper to remove smudges.

A set of magnetic brushes, as a rule, includes spare nozzles and scrapers

The outer brush has a safety cord. Sometimes he connects both parts of the device. Or it has a loop or ring at its free end for fixing, for example, on a window handle or on your own hand.

The kit also includes a plastic plate. It is needed as an interlayer between the two halves during storage. If you fold both parts without this part, it will be very difficult to separate them.

Types of magnetic brushes

Depending on the strength of the magnet, brushes are suitable for cleaning windows of a certain thickness and are divided into the following types:

  • for washing glass up to 6 mm thick;
  • for double glazing 16–24 mm;
  • for triple glass units up to 34 mm thick.

Many companies produce brushes suitable for different windows

When choosing a brush, the thickness of the glass unit is decisive. Two extreme examples:

  • a weak magnet will not hold the outer half on a triple glass unit, and it will fall off all the time, that is, it simply will not work to wash the window;
  • a brush with a powerful magnet, fixed on ordinary glass, on the other hand, will adhere so tightly to the surface that it will be difficult to move it, and the work will become ineffective.

How to find out the thickness of a glass unit

To find out what thickness a double-glazed window has, you need to make two measurements and a simple arithmetic operation:

  1. Measure the thickness of the frame and the width of the slopes. The latter are usually the same, so only one of them can be measured.
  2. Subtract twice the width of the slope from the frame thickness. This will be the desired thickness of the glass unit.

Advantages and disadvantages

Compared to other brushes for cleaning windows, magnetic has significant advantages:

  • saving time and effort, since the second side of the glass unit is cleaned without direct human participation;
  • safety during work. Washing of both internal and external glass is carried out indoors, that is, there is no need to lean out of the window, possibly risking life, which is important for apartment owners on the upper floors;
  • ease of use. Using a magnetic brush is no more difficult than any other;
  • the ability to replace parts of the structure without purchasing a new device;
  • magnetic brushes are always on sale and have an affordable cost;
  • small size and easy storage.

But there are also disadvantages:

  • Due to the design features, magnetic brushes do not clean the joints with frames and corner parts of glass units well enough. In some models, this disadvantage is partially mitigated by a more convenient shape. But in general, the problem of hard-to-reach places is more or less inherent in all devices of this type.
  • Be very careful when folding and unfolding the brush. There is a risk of pinching your fingers.
  • The device is not universal. If the house has windows of different thicknesses, brushes will have to be purchased for each type of glass unit.
  • The cost compared to conventional brushes is slightly higher. Moreover, the price of products rises in proportion to the strength of the magnet or the recommended thickness of the glass unit.

How to clean windows with a magnetic brush

Using a magnetic window brush is intuitive and shouldn't be difficult. But before starting work, you should read the instructions for use so as not to miss any important details or recommendations from the manufacturer.

Procedure:

  1. Prepare the soapy solution you normally use by dissolving the detergent in water.
  2. Moisten the surface of the glass unit with a spray gun so that the brush glides better. With insufficient moisture and weak magnets, the outer part will fall off.

  3. Separate the halves of the brush by turning them in different directions by 90 °.

  4. Dip the cleaning surfaces of the brush in soapy water for a few seconds, the material should be saturated with the detergent composition.
  5. Secure the safety cable so that the outside of the brush is not lost in the event of an emergency.
  6. Install both parts of the brush to the starting position on opposite sides of the glass unit.

  7. Clean the inside of the window by moving the brush over the glass. The outer half will follow your movements on the other side.

Recommendations for cleaning a glass unit with a magnetic brush:

  1. Brush along the perimeter of the glass unit, as close as possible to the joints. Position the brush in such a way that the cleaning element passes first and then the scraper. Movements should not be very fast and smooth.

  2. Brush the middle. Brush along the top horizontally. Make a gentle turn and go to the next horizontal. Moving from top to bottom, wipe the entire glass unit in this way. The dirt will drain along with the water and immediately be removed with a brush.
  3. Remove the brush from the window. Wipe the last area where it was with a cloth.
