Making glass doors with your own hands, their installation and dismantling
The glass door in the house is an unusual solution that emphasizes the refined taste of the owner. This design visually expands the space by letting in light. The canvas itself is made transparent or matte. Modern technologies make it possible to make glass doors durable and safe, with good sound insulation. They are used both in public buildings and in residential premises and saunas.

DIY glass door technology
Glass doors create a sense of sophistication in the interiors of home rooms, while in the long corridors of office and medical rooms they discreetly combine the space into a holistic design. Such doors can be created independently and, using different types of fasteners, you can decorate an apartment with them.
The following materials are used for the manufacture of a transparent door leaf:
-
organic glass - made from synthetic polymers, has a low weight. Most often used for shower doors. The main disadvantage: poor resistance to mechanical stress and flammability;
Ogrglass is made in different colors, so it is easy to match it to any interior
-
toughened glass - blanks are heated in a special furnace to a temperature of 700 to C, and then rapidly cooled by blowing air. Strong material, resistant to external mechanical and chemical influences, has high temperature resistance;
Tempered glass is suitable for making doors in wood or metal frames
-
triplex - several glass sheets interspersed with 2-3 layers of laminated film. Has impact resistance. Depending on the number of layers and the type of film, a glass unit can have various optical, decorative and operational properties.
Triplex has high strength, but even if such glass is broken, there will be no fragments
The glass thickness for creating such a door is 6–14 mm (the best option is within 8–10 mm).
Swinging double-leaf door, mounted on hinged hinges, can be opened in both directions
To increase the service life of transparent doors and used fittings, it is advisable to fasten the canvas to three hinges
Before starting self-production, you will need to create a draft design, having decided in advance on the material for the future design and the method of opening. And only after preparing the necessary materials and tools, you need to consistently complete the main stages of work:
- Measure the doorway.
- Cut out the transparent material for the canvas.
- Make holes for hinges, handles and a lock (if planned).
- Sand sharp edges.
- Hang the door using the necessary fasteners.

Operations such as tempering and sandblasting glass, mechanical and laser engraving or chemical etching of the surface, which help to obtain the desired texture, cannot be performed at home. Therefore, it is easier to order in the workshop the cutting of the canvas of the required dimensions and the method of processing it.
There are several ways to process glass sheets:
-
bending - the sheet, heating in a special oven, slowly melts and takes the curved shape of the prepared matrix template;
Bending curved glasses are placed at the entrance to the shower stall or joined in several canvases for a large room
-
beveling - cutting at a certain angle of the facet (facet) along all edges of the web;
A glass door can be decorated with facets not only along the edges, but also in the form of a pattern along the entire canvas
-
matting - creating a matte and rough surface or applying an opaque pattern. Glass is matted in different ways: by mechanical treatment, chemical treatment, application of firing or paint and varnish coatings;
Printed frosted glass doors become an independent decoration of rooms
-
assembly of stained glass - parts of different color and texture are glued together into a single mosaic canvas with a certain pattern or pattern.
Frosted door with prefabricated stained glass draws the eye towards colored inserts
Having decided on the material and dimensions of the door, you need to choose the appropriate type of opening. There are three main ones:
-
swing doors - differ from the same doors made of other materials, only in the shape of the fastening hinges. The transparent sheet can be either inside the frame or without it. The box is made of wood, MDF or aluminum profile;
Hinged transparent door is a more affordable solution when changing interior
-
sliding - made without a frame. The upper and lower rollers, on which the canvas moves, are attached through the holes in the glass;
Sliding doors are used for wide doorways
-
folding and rotating - they contain many connecting elements, therefore they are undesirable in places with frequent use.
Folding glass doors are usually installed on terraces and in non-standard-sized openings
High-quality fittings are of great importance for the installation of heavy glass doors: they must be durable and reliable. If such structures are installed in a sauna, then a material that is resistant to corrosion should be selected: aluminum or brass.
What is required to install a transparent door
Before installation, you need to familiarize yourself with the main recommendations of specialists:
- the base on which the glass door is mounted must be strong;
- before making or buying a door leaf, it is important to make measurements correctly and accurately, since then it will no longer be possible to cut it;
- due to the severity of the glass structure, it will not be possible to complete the installation alone: an assistant is needed;
- careless handling of fragile material can damage it;
-
after installing the glass door, it is necessary to correctly adjust its movement.
Their service life depends on the correct regulation of movable glass sheets.
Required tool
To install glass doors with your own hands, you will need the following tools:
- wooden wedges;
- building level;
- electric drill;
- set of screwdrivers;
- a special device with vacuum suction cups, which is used to hold the glass sheet;
- masking tape;
-
foam for filling gaps if a door frame is installed.
To install glass doors, you will need tools that are in the arsenal of any home craftsman.
Installation diagram
The installation of a glass door is no different from structures with a similar opening method: the swing door is mounted on hinges, and the sliding and folding doors are attached to rollers and guide rails.
Larger and stronger rollers are placed on a folding door made of double-glazed windows so that the structure is reliable
The only difference is the fasteners that hold the glass. They are placed on both sides of the web through a rubber or silicone layer so that the glass is not damaged when screwing in.
For glass doors, special hinges are used: they consist of two parts, between which glass is installed
If you plan to install a structure with a door frame, then the sequence of execution will be as follows:
-
The box is assembled and fixed in the opening.
The door frame is assembled on the floor, and then mounted in the opening along strictly aligned horizontal and vertical lines
- Hinges are installed (or connecting hinges are attached) and a glass sheet is hung.
- The seams between the door frame and the wall are filled with foam.
- Handles, locks and decorative overlays are placed on the canvas.
If such a structure is installed in a place of frequent use, then it is better to equip it with a pendulum opening mechanism. In this case, the canvas is attached to the pivot hinges to the floor and the upper part of the opening.
Swivel hinges on the side or in the center can be placed on the glass swing door, taking into account the size of the leaf

Glass door installation
During installation, you must ensure that the corners of the canvas do not accidentally touch the walls and floor, therefore, you need to use sheets of cardboard for insurance. It is recommended to cover the edges of the door with masking tape in order to protect them from chips.
Hinged door assembly sequence
- Preparatory work - a glass sheet is laid on the laid floor, and all parts of the door frame are assembled around it, as it will look in finished form.
- Marking and connecting the crossbars - the box is made a few centimeters smaller than the opening so that it can be adjusted in place.
-
Box installation - it is inserted into the doorway and leveled with wooden wedges. The vertical and horizontal installation is controlled by the building level. Then the structure is securely fixed to the anchor bolts.
The door frame is set to the building level with wooden wedges and then anchored with anchor bolts
-
Installation of the threshold (if any) - fixed to the floor between the side parts of the box. Usually glass doors are installed without a threshold, but it is necessary to enter the steam room.
The glass door in the bath must be installed with a threshold so that there is no leakage of hot steam
-
Sealing gaps - the gaps between the door frame and the opening are neatly filled with foam. The foam is applied not in a continuous layer, but in short strips, between which you must leave gaps of 10–12 mm.
Do not apply the foam in a continuous layer, as it expands during solidification and can deform the door frame
- Fastening the hinges to the box.
- Hanging a door - holes are made in the glass sheet for attaching hinges, handles and locks: for this, special feather drills and crowns of the corresponding diameter are used. The installation of the canvas is carried out together.
-
Fastening hardware to the door.
All fittings for a glass sheet are made of two parts that squeeze the glass on both sides.
- Door adjustment - hinges and fastening hinges are tightened in such a way that the door moves freely, the door leaf does not touch the frame.
-
Installation of platbands - aluminum platbands are attached with glue or by the “thorn-groove” method, and wooden ones are nailed with thin nails without a head.
Installation of platbands completes the installation of the door

Features of installation of sliding structures
If you need to install sliding glass doors yourself, then you should adhere to the same sequence of work as when installing any other canvas:
- The top bar is securely fixed in a horizontal position.
- The lower guide is attached strictly under the upper one so that there is no skewing of the door leaf.
- Rollers and other connecting elements are attached to glass doors.
- The canvases are hung, rubber stoppers are installed near the guide runners. Decorative overlays are put on.
- Door movement is regulated by tightening the fasteners.

Correct installation of the glass door
It is not difficult to check the correct installation of a transparent door, just follow these steps:
- check handles, locks, platbands, hinges and other elements for visible defects;
- inspect the glass sheet: there should be no chips on it;
- check the movement: the swing door, open to the middle, should freeze in this position. If the movement continues, then the verticality of the installation has not been observed;
- examine the wooden platbands at the attachment points: are there any hammer dents;
- to check the quality of installation of door fittings, you need to slightly press on them: while they should not stagger;
- check the quality of fastening of the hinges, handles and lock: they must be rigidly fixed, without the slightest displacement;
- the lock should scroll easily, without swaying the door leaf;
- the gaps along the entire length must be the same size: this means that the door is not skewed.

Adjustment features
You can adjust the glass door yourself if necessary. Hinges on such doors are used special, allowing the tilt of the canvas horizontally and vertically. To do this, loosen the screws on the hinge, turn the eccentrics in the desired direction with a hex wrench.
Adjustment of glass doors in horizontal and vertical position is carried out using an eccentric located in the hinge
Sliding glass doors look great even in non-straight openings: such structures can be decorated with an additional raising of the floor level

Stages of dismantling a transparent door
If it was necessary to dismantle glass doors, remember that any awkward movement can lead to a break in the canvas.
Dismantling sequence:
- Remove the platbands - carefully tear off the glued ones (if the platbands are held on self-tapping screws, then unscrew them; if there are nails, then pull them out with a small nail puller).
- To remove the hinges - you will need an assistant: one person should support the door leaf, and the second should unscrew the awnings. It is recommended to cover the sash with a soft cloth to protect the glass from scratches and chips.
- For convenience, you can unscrew the fittings.
- Carefully disassemble the door frame if necessary.
If you dismantle the glass door correctly and accurately, then you can then use it elsewhere
The use of transparent doors allows you to make the room bright and original. This solution is used when designing designs in different styles. If you are uncomfortable behind a transparent door, then you can put a colored or matte canvas, tint a simple glass with a film or decorate it with a stained glass picture.
