DIY glass door technology

Glass doors create a sense of sophistication in the interiors of home rooms, while in the long corridors of office and medical rooms they discreetly combine the space into a holistic design. Such doors can be created independently and, using different types of fasteners, you can decorate an apartment with them.

The following materials are used for the manufacture of a transparent door leaf:

• organic glass - made from synthetic polymers, has a low weight. Most often used for shower doors. The main disadvantage: poor resistance to mechanical stress and flammability;

  

  Ogrglass is made in different colors, so it is easy to match it to any interior

• toughened glass - blanks are heated in a special furnace to a temperature of 700 ^to C, and then rapidly cooled by blowing air. Strong material, resistant to external mechanical and chemical influences, has high temperature resistance;

  

  Tempered glass is suitable for making doors in wood or metal frames

• triplex - several glass sheets interspersed with 2-3 layers of laminated film. Has impact resistance. Depending on the number of layers and the type of film, a glass unit can have various optical, decorative and operational properties.

  

  Triplex has high strength, but even if such glass is broken, there will be no fragments

Before starting self-production, you will need to create a draft design, having decided in advance on the material for the future design and the method of opening. And only after preparing the necessary materials and tools, you need to consistently complete the main stages of work:

1. Measure the doorway.
2. Cut out the transparent material for the canvas.
3. Make holes for hinges, handles and a lock (if planned).
4. Sand sharp edges.
5. Hang the door using the necessary fasteners.

Operations such as tempering and sandblasting glass, mechanical and laser engraving or chemical etching of the surface, which help to obtain the desired texture, cannot be performed at home. High-quality fittings are of great importance for the installation of heavy glass doors: they must be durable and reliable. If such structures are installed in a sauna, then a material that is resistant to corrosion should be selected: aluminum or brass.

What is required to install a transparent door

Before installation, you need to familiarize yourself with the main recommendations of specialists:

• the base on which the glass door is mounted must be strong;
• before making or buying a door leaf, it is important to make measurements correctly and accurately, since then it will no longer be possible to cut it;
• due to the severity of the glass structure, it will not be possible to complete the installation alone: an assistant is needed;
• careless handling of fragile material can damage it;

• after installing the glass door, it is necessary to correctly adjust its movement.

  

  Their service life depends on the correct regulation of movable glass sheets.

Required tool

To install glass doors with your own hands, you will need the following tools:

• wooden wedges;
• building level;
• electric drill;
• set of screwdrivers;
• a special device with vacuum suction cups, which is used to hold the glass sheet;
• masking tape;

• foam for filling gaps if a door frame is installed.

Glass door installation

During installation, you must ensure that the corners of the canvas do not accidentally touch the walls and floor, therefore, you need to use sheets of cardboard for insurance. It is recommended to cover the edges of the door with masking tape in order to protect them from chips.

Hinged door assembly sequence

1. Preparatory work - a glass sheet is laid on the laid floor, and all parts of the door frame are assembled around it, as it will look in finished form.
2. Marking and connecting the crossbars - the box is made a few centimeters smaller than the opening so that it can be adjusted in place.

3. Box installation - it is inserted into the doorway and leveled with wooden wedges. The vertical and horizontal installation is controlled by the building level. Then the structure is securely fixed to the anchor bolts.

4. Installation of the threshold (if any) - fixed to the floor between the side parts of the box. Usually glass doors are installed without a threshold, but it is necessary to enter the steam room.

5. Sealing gaps - the gaps between the door frame and the opening are neatly filled with foam. The foam is applied not in a continuous layer, but in short strips, between which you must leave gaps of 10–12 mm.

6. Fastening the hinges to the box.
7. Hanging a door - holes are made in the glass sheet for attaching hinges, handles and locks: for this, special feather drills and crowns of the corresponding diameter are used. The installation of the canvas is carried out together.

8. Fastening hardware to the door.

   

   All fittings for a glass sheet are made of two parts that squeeze the glass on both sides.

9. Door adjustment - hinges and fastening hinges are tightened in such a way that the door moves freely, the door leaf does not touch the frame.

10. Installation of platbands - aluminum platbands are attached with glue or by the “thorn-groove” method, and wooden ones are nailed with thin nails without a head.

Features of installation of sliding structures

If you need to install sliding glass doors yourself, then you should adhere to the same sequence of work as when installing any other canvas:

1. The top bar is securely fixed in a horizontal position.
2. The lower guide is attached strictly under the upper one so that there is no skewing of the door leaf.
3. Rollers and other connecting elements are attached to glass doors.
4. The canvases are hung, rubber stoppers are installed near the guide runners. Decorative overlays are put on.
5. Door movement is regulated by tightening the fasteners.

Correct installation of the glass door

It is not difficult to check the correct installation of a transparent door, just follow these steps:

• check handles, locks, platbands, hinges and other elements for visible defects;
• inspect the glass sheet: there should be no chips on it;
• check the movement: the swing door, open to the middle, should freeze in this position. If the movement continues, then the verticality of the installation has not been observed;
• examine the wooden platbands at the attachment points: are there any hammer dents;
• to check the quality of installation of door fittings, you need to slightly press on them: while they should not stagger;
• check the quality of fastening of the hinges, handles and lock: they must be rigidly fixed, without the slightest displacement;
• the lock should scroll easily, without swaying the door leaf;
• the gaps along the entire length must be the same size: this means that the door is not skewed.

Adjustment features

You can adjust the glass door yourself if necessary. Hinges on such doors are used special, allowing the tilt of the canvas horizontally and vertically. To do this, loosen the screws on the hinge, turn the eccentrics in the desired direction with a hex wrench.

Stages of dismantling a transparent door

If it was necessary to dismantle glass doors, remember that any awkward movement can lead to a break in the canvas.

Dismantling sequence:

1. Remove the platbands - carefully tear off the glued ones (if the platbands are held on self-tapping screws, then unscrew them; if there are nails, then pull them out with a small nail puller).
2. To remove the hinges - you will need an assistant: one person should support the door leaf, and the second should unscrew the awnings. It is recommended to cover the sash with a soft cloth to protect the glass from scratches and chips.
3. For convenience, you can unscrew the fittings.
4. Carefully disassemble the door frame if necessary.
