How to calculate the number of sheets of metal tiles on the roof

It is not difficult to make a calculation. To do this, you need a tape measure and a calculator or an online program that will calculate the required number of sheets (or square meters) based on the data obtained during the measurement. When choosing one or another type of metal tile, you need to take into account:

  • roof area;
  • the shape of the metal tile;
  • footage of metal-tile sheets overlaps.

Those who do not want to do calculations, but are ready to spend more money, can do it easier - add 10% to the roof area and divide the resulting value by the area of one sheet. But this approach is justified only when covering small and simple roofs. Otherwise, it is better to devote a few hours to the calculations, than to incur unjustified and, moreover, considerable costs. Or use construction calculators.

Calculation of material for a shed roof with metal tiles

The construction of a pitched roof is the simplest and easiest in comparison with other types of roofs. But the result is a reliable, durable structure, on which any covering material can be laid.

A house with a pitched roof made of metal tiles looks original

To calculate metal tiles, take the following data as an example:

  • roof height h = 4.5 m, then the length of the slopes (from the eaves to the ridge, taking into account the angle of inclination) L = h / cos 30 ° = 4.5 / √3 / 2 = 5.2 m;
  • the length of the house (the length of the cornice on the sides of the house) is equal to the width of the side slopes and is 6 m;
  • the width of the house (the length of the cornices on the end sides) is equal to the width of the slopes at the end and is equal to 5 m;
  • roof slope 30 °;
  • we will use the metal tile "Monterrey" - the standard sheet length is 6.1 m, 2.95 m and 2.25 m;
  • width of metal shingles 1.18 m, longitudinal overlaps 0.08 m, useful width (1.18 - 0.08) = 1.1 m;
  • transverse overlaps 0.15 m;
  • a ledge along the cornice overhang of 0.07 m and along the ridge overhang 0.3 m (for a pitched roof).

    Shed roof scheme
    Shed roof scheme

    To calculate metal tiles, you first need to build a diagram

We make the calculation:

  1. We calculate the number of metal sheets along the width of the slope. To do this, divide the width of the slope by the useful width of the sheet: 6 / 1.1 = 5.45 ≈ 6 sheets.
  2. We calculate the number of rows along the length of the slopes: 5.2 m + 0.07 m + 0.3 m + 0.15 m (overlap) = 5.72 m. Based on this, we see that it is more rational to use metal-tile sheets with a length of 2.9 m, laid in 2 rows. Since 2.9 m * 2 = 5.8 m> 5.72 m, it means that the length of the sheets has been chosen correctly.
  3. As a result, 12 = (6 * 2) sheets of 2.9 m will go to cover the roof. You can, of course, replace them with six sheets of 6.1 m long, but such sheets are more difficult to transport, and there will be more waste.

In addition, you will have to buy:

  • strips for the design of the cornice and ridge overhang - 6 m each, which, taking into account their length (2 m) and 0.1 m of overlaps, is: (6 + 6) / (2 - 0.1) = 6.3 pcs. ≈ 7 pcs.;
  • wind strips for finishing the sides 9 m or 4.7 ≈ 5 pcs. = (9 / 1.9);

    Additional elements
    Additional elements

    Various additional elements are used for metal tiles.

  • self-tapping screws 4,8 * 35 150-200 pieces (1 package) for fixing sheets at the rate of 7 self-tapping screws per 1 m² of roof;
  • self-tapping screws 4,8 * 50 100 pieces (1 package) for processing ridge and eaves overhangs.

Calculation of metal tiles for a gable roof

The roof structure with a slope of 12-15 ° is considered optimal for laying metal tiles. If the steepness of the slopes is less, then you will have to lay reinforced waterproofing. With a larger angle of inclination, the step decreases and the number of fasteners increases. That is, in one and in the other case, the cost of covering the roof with metal tiles will increase.

Gable metal roofing

Covering material of noble cherry color adorns a strict, uncomplicated design

We leave the initial data the same. We take into account that our roof has a dormer window on one slope with dimensions:

  • width 1.1 m;
  • length 2.5 m;
  • ridge 2 m;
  • end plate 1.5 m;
  • height 1.4 m.

    Gable roof scheme
    Gable roof scheme

    On one of the slopes there is a dormer, which is calculated separately

The calculation process is as follows:

  1. We calculate the number of sheets of metal tiles for element No. 1 - a whole slope. To do this, the area of the slope S = (5.23 + 0.07) * 6 = 31.8 m2 is divided by the usable area of 1 sheet of metal tile 2.9 m long: 31.8 m2 / {(2.9 - 0.15) * 1.1)} = 10.5 pcs.
  2. Since we have the same slopes, it means that 10.5 sheets of metal will go to the second slope.
  3. In total, both slopes need: 10.5 * 2 = 21 sheets 2.9 meters long.
  4. Determine the number of sheets for the dormer window cladding. Here you can use sheets with a length of 2.25 m, which are cheaper.
  5. The area of the slopes of the dormer is: 2.5 (base) * 1.4 (height) = 3.5. Because We have two sides, multiply by 2 = 7 m².
  6. Useful area of 1 sheet of 2.25 m long: (2.25 - 0.15) * 1.1 = 2.31 m².
  7. We calculate the number of sheets: 7 / 2.31 = 3.03 ≈ 3 sheets.
  8. To summarize - in total, to cover a gable roof with one dormer window, you will need: 21 sheets of metal tiles 2.9 m long and 3 sheets 2.25 m long.

Additional elements and fasteners for the installation of metal tiles of a gable roof:

  • ridge 8 m (6 + 2) or 5 pcs.;
  • cornice strip 12 m + 1 m (dormer window) or 7 pcs.;
  • end plate 20.92 m or 11 pcs.;
  • upper valleys 5 m or 3 pcs.;
  • lower valleys 5 m or 3 pcs.;
  • self-tapping screws color 4.8 * 35 two packs of 250 pcs. for fastening sheets;
  • self-tapping screws 4,8 * 50 150 pieces (1 package) for fastening ridge and cornice elements.

Calculation of metal tiles for a hip roof

Hip roof - a kind of hipped roof, consisting of two triangular slopes and two slopes in the form of a trapezoid. T Which design presupposes complex truss system. Nevertheless, it is quite popular due to its main advantages:

  • self-cleaning ability;
  • good resistance to wind and snow loads;
  • original streamlined shape, which allows you to equip a spacious attic floor with mortise windows of any configuration.

    Hip roof structure
    Hip roof structure

    Hip roofs are very popular with developers due to their structural strength, durability and beautiful appearance.

Since the height of the roof in our example is 4.5 m, respectively, the length of the slopes, taking into account the slope, is 5.23 m. Knowing these values, we can calculate the length of the ridge ridge using geometric formulas. In our example, the ridge is 0.8 m.

Hip roof scheme
Hip roof scheme

To calculate metal tiles for a hip structure, a diagram is required

  1. We calculate the area of a triangular slope using the formula: the area of a triangle is half the base, multiplied by the height. Hence: (5/2) * 4.5 m = 11.25 m 2. For two slopes: 11.25 * 2 = 22.5 m².
  2. Determine the area of two trapezoidal slopes. The area of the trapezoid is equal to half the sum of the two bases multiplied by the height: (0.8 + 6) / 2 * 4.5 m = 15.3 m². Multiply by 2, we get 30.6 m².
  3. The total roof area is 22.5 m² + 30.6 m² = 53.1 m².
  4. The useful area of 1 sheet of metal tile 2.9 m long is (2.9 - 0.15) * 1.1 = 3.03 m².
  5. We find out the number of sheets of metal tiles for covering a hip roof: 53.1 m² / 3.03 m² = 17.5 ≈ 18 sheets 2.9 m long.

    Laying metal sheets
    Laying metal sheets

    The hip structure has triangular and trapezoidal slopes on which metal-tile sheets are laid

In addition to sheets of metal tiles, you will need:

  • ridge elements 20 m (main ridge + ribs) = 11 pcs.;
  • cornice strip 11 m = 6 pcs.;
  • self-tapping screws color 4.8 * 35 two packages;
  • self-tapping screws color 4.8 * 50 for fastening the ridge and eaves, one package.

    Self-tapping screws for metal tiles
    Self-tapping screws for metal tiles

    It is recommended to use branded self-tapping screws from one manufacturer with the main covering material for fastening sheets of metal tiles.

Varieties of hip construction

Varieties of hip designs are no less popular with private developers. In particular, the Dutch type of roof (half-hip). Calculate the amount of metal tiles to cover a half-hip roof similar to a full hip roof. The difference is only two triangular slopes, the area of which will be smaller, which means that less covering material will be required.

A house with a half-hip (Dutch) roof, covered with metal tiles
A house with a half-hip (Dutch) roof, covered with metal tiles

Convenient roof configuration allows you to make a spacious and bright attic

Suppose the length of the half-hip slopes is less than the side ones by ⅓. We will not complicate the calculation and calculate separately the area of the triangular slopes by geometric functions. Just divide their total area by 3 and get the value for half-hips: 22.5 m² / 3 = 7.5 m² with a side slope length of 1.74 m (5.23 / 3). Based on the calculations, we see that shorter metal-tile sheets are suitable for covering two half-hips. This, of course, will reduce the cost of purchasing a covering material.

So, to cover a half-hip structure, you need to purchase:

  • for finishing trapezoidal slopes with an area of 30.6 m² - 10 sheets of metal tiles 2.9 m long;
  • and for the covering of two half-hips - 3.24 = (7.5 / 2.31) ≈ 4 sheets 2.25 m long. Accordingly, additional elements are counted - they reduce the footage of ridge and cornice, but end strips are added.

Hipped roof

The hipped structure is very suitable for square buildings, for rectangular buildings with a slight difference between length and width, and for round ones. In the first case, it will be four completely identical ramps of a triangular shape. In the second, the same two pairs of triangular slopes with small deviations in area. And in the third, there are triangular slopes of the same area, the number of which is determined by the parameters of the building. A feature of the tent construction is the absence of a ridge.

Hipped roof
Hipped roof

The hipped roof is ideal for square buildings

Let's calculate the amount of Monterrey metal tiles for such a roof configuration, since it is also in great demand in suburban housing construction.

The initial data are the same that we specified at the very beginning. For a house with dimensions of 5x6 m to cover the hip roof with metal tiles, you will need:

  1. To cover the first pair of slopes (along the length of the building) - the area of these two triangular slopes is 27 m2 = (6/2 * 4.5 * 2). Their flooring will take 8.9 ≈ 9 sheets of metal tiles 2.9 m long.
  2. To cover the second pair of slopes - along the width of the building - we calculate in the same way: (5/2 * 4.5 * 2) / 3.03 (useful area of one sheet 2.9 m long) = 7.4 ≈ 8 sheets.
  3. Let's calculate the eaves: 5 * 2 + 6 * 2 = 22 m or 11.5 ≈ 12 pieces.
  4. We determine the ridge elements for facing the ribs: 5.23 * 4 = 20.92 ≈ 21 m or 11–12 pieces.
  5. Fasteners at the rate of 7 self-tapping screws per 1 m²: 49.5 * 7 = 350 pieces or 2 packs and 1 pack for fixing the ridge and cornice elements, which are fixed in increments of 12-13 cm.

Sloped hip (half hip) roof

Broken hip or half-hip structures are less common due to the complexity of their arrangement. Although they look simply mesmerizing, you will not look away for a long time, especially when the colors for the facade and roofing are skillfully selected.

The broken half-hip roof attic gives the residential building amazing beauty

It is problematic to manually calculate any covering material for such a complex roof. Here you need to break the roof into geometric planes and calculate each segment separately.

Complex roof scheme
Complex roof scheme

For further calculation of the covering material, the complex roof structure is divided into simple geometric shapes

The results are then summarized. In order not to get confused in the calculations, it is better to resort to an online calculator on the website of the seller of the selected roofing deck, or use special programs for calculating the roof.

Calculation of roofing material using an online calculator

For clarity, let's try to calculate a broken attic roof using an online calculator:

  1. We choose the shape of the roof - a broken attic gable.
  2. We enter the dimensions on request, focusing on our initial data - the length of the ridge (we have 6 m), the length of the side slope to the kink line is 3.49 m (let's say that on one slope the kink line runs at a distance of ⅔ from the ridge). The length of the side slope after the break is 5.23 - 3.49 = 1.74 m, respectively. Enter the data for the second slope in the same way - here, for example, we make a break by ⅓ from the ridge, that is, asymmetry. Then the length before the break will be 1.74 m, and after 3.49 m.
  3. Choosing a material - we chose metal tiles with an MPE 0.5 coating, matt polyester.
  4. We click on the result and we see the calculation of not only the amount of required material, but immediately the cost. So, according to our entered data, 48 m² of metal tiles, 6 m of ridge, 12 m of cornice strips and 16 m of end strips are required. Self-tapping screws 48 * 35 250 pieces (2 packages) and 48 * 50 100 pieces (1 package). In monetary terms, today the installation of a roof covering made of MPE 0.5 metal tile matte polyester on a broken mansard roof will cost 22,760 rubles.

The calculation took literally minutes. So the help of these programs is quite tangible. For more confidence, you can do several of the same calculations on different sites. They must match. In case of a small error, choose a larger result. Not by the amount, of course, but by the footage, since prices fluctuate depending on the seller and supplier of roofing materials.

Calculation of roofing material using special programs

In addition to the online calculator, you can use more serious programs written for calculating the roof as a whole - the supporting (rafter) system and the enclosing (roofing pie). This is the "Roof Profi" well-known to builders, the SketchUp program, Zhitov Calc, which allows you to carry out calculations from a smartphone based on Android, etc.

Video: how to make a roof in Sketchup

Noteworthy is the ArchiCad program, with which you can model and calculate the entire house. Starting with the terrain and ending with the roofing - section "Roof" in ArchiCad.

Of course, you need to have computer knowledge at the level of a confident Internet user and construction basics. And then mastering any construction program will not be difficult. And the benefit will be great. Especially for those who are already building a house with their own hands, or are just thinking about their own suburban housing.

Material norm for a roof made of metal

The use of metal roofing tiles is a profitable solution if all measurements and calculations are made correctly. In addition, the roofs of the houses are very attractive. With the help of such a material, you can smooth out façade defects, or, on the contrary, emphasize its advantages. Multi-colored sheets of metal tiles on one roof will make it smart, colorful, and eye-catching.

The calm gray color of the metal tile on the roof of the house gives the whole structure an exquisite, austere and rich look

And in order for a roof made of metal tiles to please for many years, you need to comply with some standards, rules for laying and operating:

  1. Choose the optimal length of metal tile sheets so that you get as little waste as possible. This is clearly seen in our example of calculating a single-pitched roof, where the length of 2.9 m was chosen. Such sheets, laid in 2 rows, with a roof length of 5.75 m will give a little waste: (5.8 - 5.75) * 6 = 0.3 m from the entire roof. Whereas sheets of 6.1 m long, laid in 1 row, would give almost a whole sheet of waste: (6.1 - 5.75) * 6 = 2.1 m. This is money thrown into the wind, and considerable if to mount metal tiles on a large and complex structure.
  2. Don't skimp on self-tapping screws. Ideally, use screws from the same manufacturer as the base coat for which they are designed. This will increase the strength of the structure several times and eliminate leaks. In addition, observe the fastening technology: 7–8 self-tapping screws for the base material and additional elements every 12–13 cm.

    Fastening metal sheets
    Fastening metal sheets

    To increase the strength of the metal roofing, it is necessary to follow the fastening technology

  3. When installing metal tiles, strictly follow the installation scheme. This includes the filling of a continuous crate at the junctions, along the ridge ridge and the passage of the valleys, the sequence of flooring of metal-tile sheets and its step.
  4. Provide good ventilation of the under-roof space.
  5. Use quality waterproofing materials. Calculate them in the same way as the main covering material.
  6. Prevent dirt from accumulating - clean drains and weak points (valleys) at least once a year.
  7. Adhere to the standards for overlaps - for metal sheets, they differ depending on the manufacturer. Therefore, buyers are given instructions for installing the purchased material. Additional elements for metal tiles are standard 2 m long with an overlap of 0.10 m during installation. Taking this into account, the number of additional elements is calculated.

Installation of a roof for metal tiles is regulated by the methodological documentation prescribed in MDS 12–47 of 2008 “Installation of metal roofing. Project of work production"
