DIY gingerbread: filling the house with a Christmas fairy tale
During the winter holidays, houses are filled with the smell of fresh spruce needles, tangerines and gingerbread. The process of creating this pastry is so interesting that adults and children are happy to participate in it. Vases with a delicacy beautifully decorated with glaze solemnly take place on the tables, and are also carefully wrapped in gift bags for loved ones.
Step-by-step gingerbread recipe
Over the past few years, I really wanted to finally make gingerbread. But everyday chores did not leave me time to do it. Last year, a miracle finally happened. Already in October, I received the holiday-themed molds ordered in the online store, and my daughter and I began to patiently wait for the holiday. On the eve of Christmas I started looking for a recipe for gingerbread and chose the one that seemed to me the most interesting. I share it with you too.
Ingredients:
- 375 g flour;
- 115 g butter;
- 155 g of liquid honey;
- 65 g brown sugar;
- 1 egg;
- 1/2 tsp soda;
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon;
- 1/2 tsp ground ginger;
- 1/4 tsp ground black pepper;
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg.
Preparation:
-
Prepare your ingredients. Remove the butter from the refrigerator for half an hour of cooking.
To prepare the dough, you need butter at room temperature
-
Place the sliced soft butter and sugar in a bowl.
To make it easier to mix the first dough ingredients, cut the butter into small pieces
-
Whisk until smooth.
Beat the mixture until the sugar crystals are completely dissolved
-
Beat in an egg and pour in liquid honey, beat with a mixer until smooth.
If honey is frozen, melt it first
-
Add spices and soda, mix with a mixer.
The amount of spices can be adjusted to your taste
-
Without stopping whisking, gradually add the sifted flour to the dough. At this stage, the mixer should be set aside, as it is easier to work with such a dough with a spatula.
To make the dough more tender, it is recommended to sift the flour 1-3 times
-
Knead the dough until the flour runs out.
Almost finished dough is best kneaded with a cooking spatula.
-
Roll the dough into a ball, wrap with cling film and refrigerate for 1–2 hours or more.
Chill the dough thoroughly before forming the gingerbread.
-
Preheat the oven to 175 degrees.
Preheat the oven about a quarter of an hour before baking the gingerbread
-
Cut the dough in two. Put one part in the refrigerator, put the other on a sheet of paper.
Use a sheet of baking paper to prevent the dough from sticking to the work surface
-
Cover with another sheet and roll out into a layer about 0.5 cm thick.
The thickness of the blank for gingerbread should not be more than 5 mm
-
Use molds to make gingerbread blanks.
Gingerbread can be shaped in any shape
-
Spread the blanks on a baking sheet lined with paper.
To prevent the gingerbread from burning, do not forget to line the baking sheet with paper
-
Bake the gingerbread for 7 to 12 minutes. As soon as the pastry is browned, the treat can be removed from the oven.
Gingerbread baking time depends on your taste and dough thickness
-
Put the finished gingerbread cookies on a dish, sprinkle with powdered sugar or decorate with glaze drawings.
Decorating gingerbread is a great reason to let your imagination run wild
How to make icing and decorate gingerbread
The most common use for decorating gingerbread and cookies is a thick icing based on powdered sugar. In its original form, this product turns out to be snow-white, but it can easily be dyed in the desired colors using food dyes.
Ingredients:
- 1 egg white;
- 200 g finely ground powdered sugar;
- 2-5 drops of lemon juice.
Preparation:
-
Whisk the egg white at room temperature.
Whisk the protein lightly for 30 seconds
-
Continuing to beat, gradually add sifted icing sugar, add a few drops of lemon juice.
Pour the powder into the protein in small portions
-
When the frosting turns white, run a whisk over a cutting board or plate to form a strip of frosting. The finished product must retain its shape for at least 10 seconds.
Finished icing should hold its shape for 10 seconds or longer
-
Divide the frosting into pieces and paint the desired colors with food colors.
To color the glaze, use food coloring in the colors you need
-
Place the finished icing in the cooking bags with attachments. If there are no attachments, simply cut off the corners of the bags and squeeze the frosting through the resulting mini-holes.
Glaze bags should be cut very carefully, otherwise the holes will be too large and neat patterns will not work
-
Decorate the gingerbread cookies and let the glaze dry completely.
Decorating gingerbread with icing will bring pleasure to all family members
