What can replace sodium tetraborate for lizun

Slime is a fairly easy-to-make toy that well develops motor skills and logical thinking in a child. Sodium tetraborate is usually used for its manufacture. However, its use is not always available and safe: for example, young children who like to taste all their toys can be poisoned by this ingredient.

Why sodium tetraborate is dangerous

Sodium tetraborate cannot be called a highly toxic substance. It does not emit harmful vapors into the air, it is safe in contact with the skin. However, if ingested, it can cause many negative effects. Among them:

  • nausea, vomiting;
  • stomach pain, colic;
  • loss of appetite;
  • dizziness, loss of consciousness;
  • convulsive muscle contractions;
  • arrhythmia.

Sodium tetraborate can be purchased at any pharmacy - it is widely used in medicine

For this reason, for a small child who still pulls everything he sees into his mouth, it is worth making a slime from safer ingredients.

What can replace sodium tetraborate

The "original" recipe uses sodium tetraborate in combination with PVA glue. Without the first ingredient, the toy will not turn out the same as in stores: moderately sticky, ridiculously rolling along the walls and translucent. However, it is too dangerous for children under three years old. Fortunately, in the recipe for making slime, you can replace the harmful substance with other ingredients.

Potato starch

In order not to put the baby's health at risk, replace tetraborate with potato starch:

  1. Mix warm water and starch in a 1: 1 ratio. For a fist-sized slime, 100 ml of both ingredients will be enough.

  2. Add another 100 ml of glue.
  3. Mix ingredients until smooth. At this point, the mixture should be similar in consistency to pie dough - not runny, but not too steep.
  4. You can immediately check the "performance" of the future slime. Knead some of the mixture between your fingers. If it's not sticky at all, add more PVA glue. Conversely, if the toy sticks a lot to your hands, dilute the mixture with water.
  5. Place the mixture in any plastic bag and start kneading it with your hands.
  6. Put the bagged mixture in the refrigerator for two hours.
  7. The slime is ready! You can get it out of the bag and play.

Even without dyes, such a slime has a beautiful, milky, uniform color. However, you can experiment. Add different food colors, mix them, make a colorful, rainbow slime. Try to mix the colors even at the stage of diluting the starch with water - in this case, the color transition will be beautiful and gradient.

Potato starch is completely harmless when swallowed in such quantities. The main danger here is the PVA glue itself.

You can also make slime without using PVA glue, replacing it with regular shampoo. The technique is the same as in the previous method.

Soda

Plain baking soda can be a good substitute for sodium tetraborate:

  1. Mix 100 ml of PVA glue with a quarter glass of water. Add dye at this stage if desired. Without the dye, the slime will be pale beige or yellowish.
  2. In another container, mix half a cup of baking soda with a quarter cup of water. You should get a liquid gruel. Add more baking soda if necessary to achieve a sour creamy consistency.
  3. Combine diluted glue and baking soda. Stir until smooth.
  4. The mixture will gradually get denser and stronger. If it doesn't, add some glue and baking soda and stir again.

You can make a slime yourself from improvised means without resorting to pharmaceutical chemicals. And although the toy will not turn out to be very similar to its prototype from the movie, it will still bring a lot of pleasure to you and your child.
