Beauty secrets of Soviet women: what was used during the Soviet era
It's no secret that there was a shortage of many products in the USSR. This also includes personal hygiene products, as well as cosmetics and other attributes necessary to maintain beauty. Soviet women used various tricks in order to always remain at their best.
Beauty secrets of Soviet women
Many Soviet beauties did not even dream of cosmetics and care products that every second woman currently uses. For example, girls often used egg yolk to wash their hair, diluted with water and applied to their hair. The women used a bite to rinse. It was added to warm water and poured over the head after washing. After that, the hair became soft and silky. For styling, the girls often resorted to using beer. This intoxicating drink was used to wet the curls before rolling on the curlers.

Lightening of hair in general took place in an almost barbaric method. A mixture of hydrogen peroxide and laundry soap was applied to the strands. Ammonia was sometimes added. This composition severely dry out the hair. In addition, it was unrealistic to achieve an ash blonde in this way. It turned out to be either yellowish or reddish. Basma was used for staining in dark tones.

The Leningradskaya ink was especially popular. In another way it was called "spit-bowl". Such a remedy is far from a modern product in consistency. Before applying the dye to the eyes, it was necessary to spit into it several times or add water. It was this tool that was used to color eyelashes and eyeliner for the upper eyelid. To obtain a more expressive look, tooth powder was also used. It was applied to the lashes under the last layer of mascara.

Another well-known in those days means that women used for care was baby cream. This product was used to moisturize the skin and as a foundation (pre-mixed with the Teatralny or Ballet cream). To fix the hairstyle, they also often resorted to the use of sugar dissolved in water. This mixture allowed to keep the hair for a long time.

Owners of oily skin who lived during the Soviet era used baby powder or tooth powder to eliminate shine. Some women of fashion used petroleum jelly before applying shadows. This product allowed the makeup to last longer. Crayons were often used as shadows, which were ground into powder.

I remember how my grandmother always used Ballet cream. This product had a very oily texture. Unlike modern foundations, there was only one color on sale. I also remember how my neighbor let her eyes down with a regular pencil for drawing, and my mother painted her eyelashes with Leningradskaya ink. I tried to use such a product, but at that time it seemed to me unrealistically difficult.

However, there are those that are still relevant. Despite the total shortage, women of the times of the USSR tried to keep up with fashion and came up with more and more new means and ways to care for their appearance.
