What to do with the blanks left after winter
Almost every housewife has a common problem in the spring: the remaining pickles take up a lot of space in the cellar. The blanks are no longer consumed so quickly, because fresh herbs have appeared, and it is better to make salads from them.
Treat friends and neighbors
It's a good idea to distribute pickles and jams to friends. A donated jar of pickled tomatoes or jam will strengthen good neighborliness, and people will feel special towards you. After all, not everyone has a garden plot, and not everyone can do planting due to lack of free time.
So, collect your blanks and take them to work or distribute to neighbors. For some of your colleagues, assorted vegetables will be a great addition to your dinner. Homemade marmalade is perfect for a joint tea party. You will also have to share the recipe.
Use in dishes
Sauerkraut will go to lean cabbage soup with potatoes or barley. Season them with sauteed onions and serve with whole wheat bread. Cucumbers go to pickle, pickled tomatoes can be put in stewed vegetables at the very end of cooking - the dish will be spicy and piquant.
Sugar jam can be used to make a good filling for pies and sweet rolls. When baked, the sugar cubes caramelize and create a glaze on the surface. The aroma of garden berries will not leave your household indifferent, and, thus, old blanks will find great use.
You can also make homemade wine from the jam.
Here are 2 simple recipes that will help you prepare tasty and healthy dishes from old blanks:
Apple pie
Ingredients:
- wheat flour - 1 glass;
- granulated sugar - 1/2 cup;
- salt;
- yeast - 1 tsp;
- vegetable oil - 2-3 tbsp. l.;
- apple jam.
First, let's prepare the dough. Sift a glass of flour into a suitable container, pour half a glass of granulated sugar and 1 tsp. dry yeast, salt a little. Add two to three tablespoons of vegetable oil.
Now you need to fill the mixture with warm water. The dough should not be thick. Stir it and put it in a warm place for 20 minutes to rise.
Take out the apples from the candied apple jam with a spoon and lay them on a baking sheet covered with paper. You can sprinkle the slices with cinnamon or orange peel. As soon as the dough rises, knead it with a spoon and pour the apples. Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for about 25 minutes. We determine the readiness with a wooden stick.
The pie turns out to be lush and aromatic, with a golden brown crust. It tastes even better when cold.
Vegetable stew
Ingredients:
- cabbage - 300 g;
- potatoes - 3 pcs.;
- carrots - 2 pcs.;
- onion - 1 pc.;
- salt;
- vegetable oil - 3 tbsp. l.;
- pickled tomatoes;
- black pepper.
At the bottom of a saucepan with thick walls, put peeled onions cut into large rings, fill it with vegetable oil. Cut the peeled carrots and potatoes into small pieces. We put everything in a saucepan, add chopped cabbage. Salt lightly and pour in half a glass of water. Cover with a lid and put in the oven for 40 minutes.
When the dish is ready, take it out. The vegetables became soft, the water was almost completely absorbed, and the onions were even fried a little. Sprinkle the stew with freshly ground pepper and add the peeled pickled tomatoes, mashed with a spoon.
Mix vegetables thoroughly and let it brew for 15 minutes. Tomatoes give the dish a pleasant spice and beautiful color.
For animal feed
Sauerkraut is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals. For example, rabbits should not be given fresh white and red cabbage. But a little sauerkraut will even be useful.
Dried apples can be given in limited quantities to dogs, goats and horses. Fruits contain fiber, potassium, iron, and many vitamins.
Compost
If pickled and pickled vegetables have lost their elasticity and presentation and can no longer be used for food, they can be put into compost. Fiber will become a valuable source of trace minerals and subsequently enrich the garden soil. When composting under plants, minerals will go into humus, and thus your plantings will be provided with all the necessary nutrients.
