How to enable and use tethering on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch
Free internet is common these days. Wi-Fi hotspots can be found in every public place. But there are situations when you need to go online from a stationary device or laptop, but there is no Wi-Fi network nearby. This is where tethering can come in handy on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
IPhone, iPad, and iPod touch tethering
Today, Apple devices such as the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch are very common. Modem mode is a function that allows you to make a point of communication out of these gadgets and share the Internet signal with nearby smartphones, tablets, etc. Moreover, all that is required for its operation, except for the device itself, is access to the Internet through a cellular operator.
You can share Wi-Fi using your phone
How to enable modem mode
If you want to "distribute" the Internet from your iOS device, follow these steps:
-
Go to the phone settings and find the "Modem mode" button. Click on it.
Select "Modem Mode" in the phone settings
-
Turn on the slider if you want the device to start providing Internet access to other devices. To do this, simply slide the switch to the right.
Move the slider to the right to enable the phone to provide Internet access from other devices
How to use modem mode
After turning on the mode, you should decide how you will connect to the network created by the phone. There are several options:
- via Wi-Fi;
- using bluetooth;
- via the USB connector of your device.
The list of further actions depends on your choice.
Via Wi-Fi
To connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi:
- Select the created Wi-Fi connection via your computer or laptop.
- Enter the password if it has been set and the connection will be successfully created.
To set a password, find the line "Password" in the "Modem Mode" menu on the device and enter the desired password. It must meet the following requirements:
- using only English letters;
- the use of numbers and some punctuation marks;
-
content of at least eight characters.
Enter the desired password in this line as required

Via USB
To connect to the Internet via USB:
-
Install the latest version of iTunes from the official website on a personal computer or laptop, since the program comes with drivers for successfully connecting an iOS device to a PC.
Install iTunes on the device to which you "distribute" the Internet
- Connect your mobile device to your computer. This must be done through a special USB cable that comes with the device.
-
Your phone should appear in iTunes. Make sure you have created a connection and can use it.
Make sure the connection is created
Do not leave the USB connection active if you are not currently using it. Otherwise, instead of charging, the phone will connect to the device every time it is connected to the computer.
You can terminate the USB connection by clicking "Deactivate Service"
Via bluetooth
To connect to the Internet via Bluetooth:
- Go to phone settings.
- Turn on Bluetooth.
- Also activate the Bluetooth module on the device you want to connect to.
-
Click on the connection icon in the notification bar. Next, select the device and click "Connect to Network" for Mac OS. If the connection is successful, you will see the corresponding inscription.
Check if the connection was successful
-
If you are trying to connect via a Windows OS device, right-click to bring up the context menu and select Connect Via and Access Point.
Right click on the device image and select "Connect Via" and "Access Point"
Possible problems and solutions
If there is no "Modem mode" function in the phone settings, do the following:
-
Open the "Cellular" section.
Select the item "Cellular"
-
Here are the details of your operator: APN, username and password.
We remember the specified data about your cellular operator
- Remember or copy this information, and then enter it below in the "Modem Mode" section.
- Once the APN, username and password are entered, the Modem Mode button will appear in the settings under the Cellular tab.
Wi-Fi connection problems
If the connection fails, make sure that:
- you choose exactly the access point that you created on your device;
-
the password was entered correctly;
Check the entered password is correct
- Not too many external devices are connected to the iOS device. there may be restrictions on the number of one-time connections.
If the connection fails, try restarting the Wi-Fi module on the computer (or other device from which you are trying to connect).
USB connection problems
If there are problems with the USB connection:
- make sure iTunes recognizes your device, if not, update the program;
- check the integrity of the USB cable;
- try deactivating and reactivating the network.
If that doesn't work, pull out and plug the USB cable back into the connector.
Bluetooth connection problems
If you have problems connecting via Bluetooth:
- turn off and then turn on the Bluetooth module on both devices;
- if possible, avoid other devices with an active Bluetooth module;
- delete those connected devices that the phone has memorized. Then try to establish a new connection;
- try restarting your phone without turning off the tethering function.
We figured out how to put an iOS communication device into tethering mode. Now you can access the Internet from a computer, tablet or laptop, regardless of your location, if you have an iPhone or iPad in the network coverage area.
