Why and how often you need to update Google Chrome

Regular updates of any browser, including Google Chrome, will save you from:

  • viruses. New versions of viruses appear every day, so browsers become vulnerable over time and put your computer at risk of infection. Browser developers analyze new viruses and create new defenses against them. Thus, the update significantly reduces the risk of infection;
  • browser crashes. If you notice that Google Chrome has become slower and with frequent crashes, the problem may be in its not updated state.

With the update of the browser, you can get a number of new functions that make the Internet more comfortable.

How to find out the current version of Google Chrome

Google Chrome usually updates automatically, like most modern browsers. Then why know the current version of the browser, if the developers themselves follow the updates? The fact is that for some reason the automatic update may not happen. In this case, you need to make the upgrade yourself. To find out if an update is needed, check the current version of your browser:

  1. Open the Google Chrome browser.
  2. Find a sign in the upper right corner with three vertical dots. Click on it with the left mouse button.
  3. In the menu that appears, move the mouse cursor over the penultimate "Help" item.

    Help section in the browser menu
    Help section in the browser menu

    Open the section "About the Google Chrome browser"

  4. Select the first item "About Google Chrome" from the small list. A new tab with information will open.

How to update Google Chrome using different methods

There are several ways to manually update Google Chrome. Let's consider the most famous of them.

With Secunia PSI

Secunia PSI allows you to upgrade many programs on your computer, including browsers. It also automates the update process and detects vulnerabilities in third-party software. PSI is configured as follows:

  1. Download and install the program from a trusted source. Open the software and click on Scan Now to find the latest updates for Google Chrome. Secunia PSI will start the analysis, which may take some time.

    Scan Now button in Secunia PSI software
    Scan Now button in Secunia PSI software

    Click on the Scan Now button to make the program start looking for available software updates

  2. After the analysis is complete, the Programs that need updating section will appear in the program window. If you see the Google Chrome browser in it, left-click on it once.

    Find in the Programs that need updating section the Google Chrome icon

  3. Select a language and click on Select language. The program will start downloading the updates and then install them by itself. The Secunia PSI window will be labeled Downloading update under the browser icon.

    The Downloading update mark indicates that the program downloads updates for the selected software

  4. After a while, the program will move the browser to the next section of Up-to-date programs. This will mean that Google Chrome has been updated to the latest version.

If after the analysis stage the Google Chrome icon does not appear, it means that the browser does not need updates.

By checking for browser updates

To help the Google Chrome browser update itself, you need to go to the section with the description of the program:

  1. Go to the "About Google Chrome" tab, as described above in the "How to find out the current version of Google Chrome" section.
  2. If your browser needs an update, it will immediately start downloading it and then installing it. Wait a while. As a result, the phrase "The latest version of Google Chrome is already installed" should appear.

    Wait for the phrase "The latest version of Google Chrome is already installed" appears

By reinstalling the program

Updating Google Chrome by reinstalling it occurs in three stages: saving browser data, removing the program from the computer and reinstalling it from the official website. This method will work for you if the previous ones did not work, when the built-in tools or a third-party program did not find the latest updates.

Saving browser data

Since in the next step we will delete the browser, the information that has accumulated in it for a long time will also disappear. These are bookmarks, browsing history, passwords, filling forms, etc. If you do not want to lose all this data, do the following:

  1. Left-click on the profile icon in the upper right corner.
  2. Click on the blue Sign In to Chrome button.

    Sign in to your Google account
    Sign in to your Google account

    Sign in to your Google account

  3. Enter your email address and Google Account password. This will log you into your Google account and can set up syncing of your data to save it.

    Entering your Google email address
    Entering your Google email address

    Enter your Google email to sync data

If you don't have a Google account, but you need to save information in your browser, register it:

  1. Go to the "Create a Google Account" page using your browser search.
  2. Fill in all the fields of the form:

    • name;
    • surname;
    • username in Latin letters, which will appear at the beginning of your email address;
    • password.

      Create a Google account
      Create a Google account

      Fill in all the fields of the form to create a Google account

  3. Click on "Next".
  4. Write your phone number (optional), another email address to protect your account, date of birth and gender.

    Google Account Form
    Google Account Form

    Enter additional information for your future Google account

  5. Click on the blue Next button again.
  6. The service will offer to send an SMS to your phone number to confirm it. Click on "Send" or "Not now". Enter the code from the SMS in the field and click on "Confirm".
  7. Click on "I Agree". Your Google account has been created.

You can set up synchronization in your Google Account as follows:

  1. Click on the browser menu button (three vertical dots). Select the "Settings" section.
  2. In the first block "Users" click on the big button "Synchronization".

    Advanced Synchronization Settings Window
    Advanced Synchronization Settings Window

    We include the types of data that you need to save in your Google account

  3. Make sure there are checkmarks next to all items or those that you want to keep (add or remove checkmarks).
  4. Close the tab, the changes will take effect.

It is not necessary to create a Google account. This is only necessary if you want to save all your bookmarks, history and browser passwords. If you're happy with a clean browser with no information, skip this step. Now you can proceed to uninstall the program from your computer.

Removing Google Chrome

There are two ways to remove any program from your computer's memory: using standard Windows tools and using third-party utilities. The difference is that third-party programs remove the software completely along with registry entries and other residual files. If you uninstall the program using a built-in tool, there is a risk that the files remaining in memory will conflict with the files of the newly installed browser, so consider the second method of uninstallation:

  1. Download the program from the official website and install it on your computer.

    Free Revo Uninstaller
    Free Revo Uninstaller

    Download the free version of Revo Uninstaller

  2. Run the program. A window will open in which you will find a list of programs installed on your PC.
  3. Find Google Chrome. Right-click on the item and select the "Delete" function in the context menu.

    List of programs on the computer in the Revo Uninstaller window
    List of programs on the computer in the Revo Uninstaller window

    Run Google Chrome Removal

  4. Select a scan mode (moderate or advanced). Click on "Scan".

    Selecting the scanning level
    Selecting the scanning level

    Select the scan level for residual files in PC memory associated with Google Chrome

  5. Revo Uninstaller will uninstall and then start scanning your computer's memory for files in the registry that are associated with Google Chrome.

When the complete removal of the program is complete, be sure to restart your PC.

Installing the latest version of Google Chrome

Now proceed to install the latest version of the browser:

  1. Download the latest browser distribution from the official website. Click on the blue Download Chrome button. The installation file will be downloaded. Open it up.

    The official Google page for downloading the browser of the same name
    The official Google page for downloading the browser of the same name

    Click on the "Download Chrome" button

  2. Allow this application to make changes on your device.
  3. The system itself will download all the necessary files, and then immediately install them. After that, the browser will open automatically.

Browser reinstallation completed. If you want to return all bookmarks and other information to the browser, please sign in to the previously registered Google account.

Errors when updating Google Chrome

Crashes may occur while updating your Google Chrome browser. Usually, errors have codes that can be used to determine the cause of the problem. The main ones are:

  • error 9 - the new version of the browser is incompatible with the one already installed;
  • error 11 - the expand.exe file, without which the update is impossible, is currently unavailable;
  • error 13 - another program is blocking the update;
  • error 101 - the directory cannot be created in the hard drive.

How to fix errors

If you have problems updating your Google Chrome browser, follow these tips:

  • check your firewall, parental control, and antivirus settings. Perhaps it was these programs that prohibited access to the official website of the developer, namely to tools.google.com and dl.google.com;
  • make sure that the update checker has Internet access;
  • check the system for malware with a basic antivirus. A virus can affect the installation of updates;
  • make sure you have an updated operating system. Google Chrome no longer works on operating systems such as Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8. If your computer has one of these OS, install their newer versions;
  • restart your computer and repeat the browser update;
  • reinstall the program using the method described above in the section "By reinstalling the program".

If you are unable to update, contact your administrator to complete the browser update.

Since the automatic update of Google Chrome may not work in some situations, check from time to time to see if new versions of the browser are available, especially if it has become slower. You can update the browser for free in three ways: in the browser itself in the window with information about it, through Secunia PSI and by completely reinstalling the program. If the update fails, check your PC for viruses and make sure your OS is up to date.
